It will come with linux, so no windows.
As for other details, we'll know when it comes out.
Why would sony want to use their main competitors software anyway?

If you mod it it's possible to run windows.Mods like this won't be around for a long time after it's release.

There is no real reason to want windows though with linux pre installed.

You can do all that in linux. Beside the linux that's installed on it is custom made for ps3 and will have support and all that so u'll be getting stability and reliability.
If they try to get windows on it then it wont be very usable for a long time (especially if it's vista).
As for replacing your pc with the ps3 i'm not too sure how that will work out. I can guarantee though that the linux community will be doing alot of great things with it so expect any thing ;)

I dont know who would want to go through all that stress. You know how much time and effort it would take to accomplish a project like that. Any such experienced persons all much more constructive things to do unless ms want to do it themselves just to sell more copies of win to those poor entrapped expecting ones.

I remember a few years back there was a project going to run win98 or me on the ps2. Obviously that fell though. It was way too problematic and time resource consuming to be continued. I really don't think that they will bother to try doing it agian.

One interesting point though. Our friend Ken once said in an interview:
Quote:
Kutaragi envisions other operating systems running on top of the Cell kernel as applications: "other PC operating systems can run too, such as Windows and Tiger, if the publishers want to do so."

http://www.engadget.com/2005/06/09/kutar...will-run-linux/

This is classic Ken but it's worth a thought.

Ken AGIAN:
Quote:
He further emphasized the PS3's PC-like abilities, stating there would be no problems running popular flavors of OS, including Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X: "to the PS3, an OS is like any other application."
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6152519.html

Is he just flying off at the mouth or is this really gonna happen???

Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm

There might be some hack to get Windows running on the PS3. There is allready Windows 95 on the PSP and there was a massive attempt to run Windows XP on Xbox (A few people got Windows 98 running). Both used some kind of Linux-Windows emulator. With the PS3 running Linux as standard it will be one bit easier again.

It;s for those who really want it. Personally i think linux is just fine and i really don't wan to run wincrash....hangdows......Windows on my console. It's already on one of my pc's at home, i use it exclusivly at work (hell i'm an MCSE), it shares half of my laptop (dual boot ubuntu / xp). So win on ps3 naaaaaa i'll pass.
If they do come up with the hack though i'de try it but just for learning perposes.

look, the answer is simple. ms or apple would have to produce their own version of their OS will the cell's coding, because im not sure if the cell can do it. the achitechture is different, and only some linux breed can currently live on it. they may be an emulator like virtual pc for mac, but it would not run too well, just like virtual pc.

But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because youre so busy going from a to z, that theres 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

uhh..yeah..... i see many uses. no more need for a pc is the biggest. you get a system with great graphics plus a home computer for $500/600.

but what if, like me, you hate linux? not so user friendly, and i dont care for its ugly a$$ interface's i've seen. i'd like the new mac os 10.5 for my ps3 tho, and windows...i already have a pc so i get enought of it.

ok this is the answer i really want to give you
'learn it learn to like it live with it and love it.'

However the real answer is.
There are so many ways to customise linux and make it user friendly and just as good looking as Mac an Win. The sky's the limit. I admit it takes time and some effort to learn some routine things but once you have it down you're good to go. It's a lie that linux is crash free but it is certainly far less prone to crash than Windows and you can always get excelent free community support.

Notice I have yet to say anything about running os 10 on ps3.
So far i have been giving every reason i dont want to see windows running on it.
Honestly i am not a mac guy i acctually dont like mac at all, I perfer windows alot more and linux even more than that. But i would love to see osx on the ps3 i think that would be cool.

personally i think linux is pretty stable especially when compared to windows which basically shits itself on occasion
