I have a QUESTION!! I have a PS2 (SLIM).I just got the maxtor 80GB with a enclosure. And i just orderd a USBExtreme. If you have a SLIM PS2 is that all you need(PS2, HDD, Enclosure, and the USBEXTREME)? Or do you need the mod and Magic Switch(Ghost Switch)?

I everyone, i just signed up i'm a newbe :) Right back to my question.I have a modded Slim PS2,I think it has a Modbo chip on it.I read a lot of articles about connecting an HDD to Slim PS2.But my problem is although my PS2 has a mod chip it doesnt recognize the burned USBAdvance or Extreme. Is it maybe not supported by this chip?I went to their web-site and it does say that it can boot home-brewed software. All i get is the screen where it asks for a PS2 disc.Ohhh not to mention i tried it without an HDD,dunno if it makes any different though. Can anyone tell me whats going on?

Thanks a lot

first of all you dont need to hit the "reply" button 4 times. Just push it once and wait. sometimes this site is slow so it takes a minute to refresh.

About your problem.....

Try putting the game onto the hdd by using the install option from within usbadvance.

Also double check that the games you are playing are compatible. The compatibilty for the usb hdd is NOT the same as the one for the internal hdd.

Yeah,sorry about the reply's :)

I did use the ul_install utility. It splits the files into 1gb pieces with a funny file name.snes.xxxxxxx. if i remember correctly.Whats the other way of adding the games on to the HDD? When i run the usbtest.elf it passes all tests sucessfully. I only tried PES4

What i dont get is,if everyone is successfully getting this thing to work why dont they tell us how they did it?All i read on this site is just the replies i see on others.

Games are installed (ul_install and windows client)

The HDD gets detected

i can see the games on the HDD

the USBTEST passes ok

When i boot the USBADVN.ELF nothing

all i get is a black screen, cant even sellect games yet to see if it will run or not.

So,anyone at all got any ideas of what whent wrong??

Quick question about this program.

Can you play ripped video on the HD? Like if I ripped one of my DVD's and left it in the DVD format, could this mod recognize and play back the video?

yes you can use a usb hdd
yes you need a mod chip or copied cd boot method (ie swap magic)

Your best bet as with anyone using a slim ps2 is to get the ide hdd adapter. It needs to be soldered on the inside. But it will give MUCH better results

Stinky_1, You seem rather knowledgable on the subject and after reading this entire thread several times, I have some unanswered questions due to conflicting opinions presented.

1) Where can i get your PS2_BOOT_CD; the link is broken.

2) This boot cd; you can burn it on to a CDR and run it on the PS2? (I know it sounds newbish but several posts confused me) Or is this for sole PC -> HDD use?

3) IF the cd is not meant to work standalone on a PS2, I'm assuming i need a swap magic for it?

My underlying question i guess is if there is a way to boot my ps2 WITHOUT purchasing one of those commercial disks (such as the swap magic)

I have more questions, but these are my most important ones; please resolve the link issue if you can!

Thanks alot.
Morzan

PS any info i collect will be helpful as I'd like to compile a comprehensive newbie tutorial on the subject.

have a question here:

I am converting my games into the USB HDD, but it is reallly slow! From the DVD it took like more than 2-3 hours for a 4gb game. Is it supposed to be this slow?

I am using the windows client USB extreme without the ul_install command.

Specs:
DVD DRIVE 16x
USB 1.1 port
USB 2.0 enclosure HDD (yes i know it only goes at 1.1)

any help appreciated.

Yea i used to wait for hours to convert my games to UsbExtreme until i found a way to do it in like 5 mins or less... and heres how.

Hook up ur HDD to ur com and go to my computer and right click ur external HDD. Go to properties and then click on the hardware tab. From there click on properties then select the "policies" tab. Then select optimize for performance.

and that should make it alot faster... Simple isnt it.

hey thanks dude. yes its working much faster now. however,

Grandia III
Winning 11 9 International
Naruto 3

These 3 games dont work for me. I am using USB Advance.

Update: Hmm it seems that time for a 4gb game to store decreased from more than 3hrs to 1.5hrs. Any other tips? It is rather far from 5mins =x

It is running on USB 1.1, but shouldnt have this big a difference right?

I dont know man. So its still taking u an hour instead of 3??? Kinda dont understand what ur tryin to say but maybe its because ur com has a 1.1 usb port. I know that the external HDD has 2.0 but maybe u need a 2.0 usb port on ur com as well. I dont even know if my com has a 2.0 or a 1.1 but it does take me 5 mins now tho no lie.

It never took me 3 hours to store a game. B4 i figured out this lil trick it took me about an hour. It was storing data at 1mb per second and when i changed the setting on the HDD to maximal performance it stores data at 10mb per second, which takes about 5 or so minutes for a 4 gig game versus the hour it used to take me.

And remember u need to use the "safely remove hardware" deal b4 turning off ur HDD or disconnecting it from ur com cuz if not it may jack up ur HDD data like it did mine. =/

usb 1.1 is slow. So your data transfer will be slow. 1 hour is not unreasonable for a 4bg size at that speed.

Yes my link to my AIO disk is dead. I stopped making it and supporting it. Its now for my own use only.

If you do find a copy of it, or follow my instructions and make your own you will still need swap magic or a mod chip to use it.

I have a slim ps2 and usb advance. every game isn't compatible. but there are some games that are compatible with swap magic. I was wondering. Can you copy swap magic cd or dvd on your usb extreme hard drive. Boot it up using usb extreme. Then swap games out? I would like to swap games out without using a slide card or using a flip top cover or opening a case. I think this is a pretty idea. Just wanting to know if it works before i buy a swap magic cd/dvd

mac.
