Homebrews, are small Programs mostly Games that were written by plain folk for everyone ~who can~ to enjoy. ~Everyone that has a v1.00, v1.50 or v2.00 with the Fanjita EBOOT Loader that is~...

ISP's = Internet Service Provider (or SOL opps I ment AOL), It's the new Millennium and you still havent heard this of this term??

ICS = Internet Connection Shareing. It's been a part of the Microsoft line of OS (Operating Systems), since Windows 98/SE. Perssing the 'F1' Key and then typeing in ICS into the Window, should give you all the Info you'd need on this!

It really shouldnt matter if you have a pc or a mac if all you want to do is connect your psp to the internet. All you need is a wireless router.

The box said "Requires Windows 98 or better", so I installed Linux !!

ok so i have a linksys router and everything is set up perfect as far as i can tell. there are no security setups on my router, no firewalls, and ive enabled other networks to connect through the router. but when i try to connect with my psp, i get the message "A connection error has occurred. A connection to the aqccess point could not be established. Check the security settings for the network and tr again."
I have not seen this error message mentioned in previous posts. so i am wondering if anyone knows a solution or even what the main problem is? i would greatly appreciate it.

what the crap?!?!?! some people here are simply so friggin noobies.

i would like to clear the freaking matter up.
as of now my only problem is finding a good psp browser.

if you have the patience and you are willing to learn read on. if you're already a smart ass then use find or Ctrl+F in most browsers, and find: "summary". else piss off.

let's clear up some terms:

802.11 - the standard for your "wi-fi" devices. these include your wireless LAN, wireless routers and wireless access points.

802.11a - a modification of the original specification. the psp is not compatible with these types of devices which include 802.11a only routers and access points.

802.11b - possibly one of the most widely used wireless specification. this involves a maximum transfer rate of 11mbps. the PSP is specified to use this network type.

802.11g - an improvement of 802.11b, the maximum transfer speed is now up to 54mbps. this specification includes new features that most people have no idea of, so i will not discuss it further. this is backwards compatible with 802.11b. so if you buy a 802.11g router or access point it is still compatible with 802.11b. 802.11a IS DIFFERENT AND INCOMPATIBLE WITH 802.11B OR 802.11g!!!!

802.11n - new upcoming specification still being constructed, the said specification will be at around 200+ mbps

wi-max or 802.16 - A WHOLE DIFFERENT MATTER! its like a new specification for wireless broadband internet and not wireless networking.

router - a device that is used to (well..) route your internet amongst clients. a router is attached after a dsl or cable modem. if you're on dial-up it is pointless to own one. there are two types, wired and wireless. the most common indicator of a wireless router is that you're router has one or two or more antennas sticking out of it. a dsl/cable modem is not equal to a router. for you to CONNECT YOUR PSP TO THE INTERNET YOU NEED A WIRELESS ROUTER NOT A SIMPLE CABLE/DSL MODEM. a router is also an access point, and it is designed to share a broadband internet connection.

here's what the setup may look like:

Internet -> Modem -> Router -> Computer or PSP

OR

Internet -> Modem -> Router -> Access point -> Computer or PSP.

But i would RECOMMEND the router setup better.

wireless access point - an access point is used to extend the range of a router or to simply to connect computers together even without the internet. A ROUTER IS NOT EQUAL TO AN ACCESS POINT. There is a difference. an access point was not specifically designed to share an internet connection as i have said, it was designed to extend the range of a router or be a network hub. if you already have a router you may consider buying one if you want to extend its range.

SSID - it is the name of the network. basically the easiest way to know this is if you either a.) setup your wireless router or b.) you may look at your computer that is connected to your router or access point through wireless means! not through cable! and click start->connect to->highlight only "wireless network connection" (this is the default name under windows XP) and press right click and click status. look in the "Network:" column and see what is says. that is the SSID. IF YOU SIMPLY HAVE A CABLE/DSL MODEM AND NO WIRELESS ROUTER OR WIRELESS ACCESS POINT OR HAVEN'T SETUP ICS ON A COMPUTER WITH A WIRLESS LAN ADAPTER THEN IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU TO HAVE AN SSID. BUY YOURSELF A ROUTER! (or possibly use ICS)

WEP or WPA key - the password that you use to connect to your wireless network. AGAIN IF YOU HAVE NO WIRELESS ROUTER OR WIRELESS ACCESS POINT THEN YOU DO NOT HAVE EITHER AN SSID OR A WEP/WPA KEY! (or possibly use ICS)

ics - windows Internet Connection Sharing. this is used in place of a router. this is ideal to use if either a.) you only have two pc's wherein one is always or most of the time turned on, or b.) you have no money to buy a router or c.) you do not mind for your two pc's to be connected by cable. there is a wizard to setup this. the layout in such a scenario would be:

DSL/CABLE Internet

INTERNET -> MODEM -> COMPUTER that has ICS setup -> other computers

in this scenario the Computer that has setup ICS needs to be turned on for other computers to gain access to the internet. also that computer needs to have a second lan card or a wireless adapter. if you have set this up with a wireless lan adapter then you can create a wireless network and voila you can connect your PSP to your wireless network.

YOUR COMPUTER WOULD NOT HAVE AN SSID IF YOU DID NOT SETUP ICS AND YOU DO NOT HAVE A WIRELESS LAN ADAPTER ATTACHED ON THE COMPUTER AND SETUP TO BE THE MEDIUM TO SHARE YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY:

802.11a - up to 54mbps transfer rate and uses 5GHz as its frequency.

802.11b - up to 11mbps transfer rate and uses 2.4GHz as its frequency and is used by the PSP. This is incompatible with 802.11a.

802.11g - up to 54mbps tranfer rate and uses 2.4GHz as its frequency, this specification is backwards compatible and 802.11b. This is incompatible with 802.11a.

802.11n - new specification about to be released June or July 2006, the theoretical transfer speed is about 200+ mbps. This is also incompatible with 802.11a.

i'm not sure but i think that wi-max is a whole different thing from 802.11n

*for noobies, you have to divide the speed, such as 11mbps or 54mbps by half, this is the standard. so divide 11 by two = 5.5mbps and then divide that by 8 so the actual transfer rate would be 0.6875mbps only!

dsl/cable modem - used to connect you to the internet.

router - used to share a broadband internet connection.

access point - used to extend the range of a router.

ics - windows internet connection sharing, enables a pc to share an internet with other computers.

*YOU CANNOT CONNECT YOUR PSP TO THE INTERNET WITHOUT EITHER A WIRELESS ROUTER, ACCESS POINT OR A PC THAT HAS ICS SETUP WITH A WIRELESS LAN ADAPTER.

SSID - your WIRELESS network name.

WPA/WEP key - your key or password that enables you to connect to your wireless network.

PSP BROWSERS:

Browsers can be from Tenchi, Wipeout Pure, and Fired Up. . I don't know the settings for the Tenchi Browser. On my experience Fired Up is the easiest to use since you can download this thing from www.psp-hacks.com (search for the Fired up browser), and run it with something like UMD emu and go run the game. in the extras section select download, and if you got the version from the psp-hacks.com then it's already set-up.

The harder one to do is on the Wipeout Pure browser since you have to change your primary DNS to a DNS server. the instructions can also be found on psp-hacks.com. Although i do recommend the fired up browser way better since you just open the game then the browser then just surf.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

NOOBIES:
this section is for total noobies. real computer noobies..

ISP - your internet service provider. like yahoo! or others of the such.

Java - a programming language. this can be used to create java games (duh!) and you need your machine to have the java virtual machine installed. in the case of the pc you need to install it. in the case of mobile phones or pda's typically it already has one. in the case of the PSP.... no chance in hell are you going to install a java virtual machine. JAVA IS DIFFERENT FROM JAVASCRIPT AND THEY HAVE NO RELATION WHATSOEVER!

Javascript - a scripting language that is quite useful in improving the functionalities of HTML or a typical web page. for javascript to work your internet browser itself should support javascript!
