Just to say, I've burned 5 'back ups' so far and they've all worked, no idea what the dvd-r's were, they just say 'budget' on them, £4.95 for 25! My dvd writer was the cheapest one I could find, it cost £30 from my local pc store.

So I think I've just been lucky, it's certainly nothing I'm doing. The only thing I would say is that the iso's I've got were all from places that I trust and have never had a problem with anything from them in the past but I've no idea if this is anything to do with it or not.

Oh and I'm using Nero 7.

Thanks for the info bruce, you're a star. :)

I just ordered my max drive pro and im reading so im kinda getting nervous about this .. If anyone had a precent or ppl this worked for and a precent of ppl it didnt work for I would like to see that .. Also for those who have done this mod is there the issue of choppy game play and lagging in the game or is that only a issue with streaming "backups" over the BBA?

I thought this was such a great turial that I would make... what to call it? A tribute? Yeah, I decided to make a tribute to this tutorial, if that makes sense!

I took the tutorial, put it into Microsoft Word, fixed all kinds of spelling, got all the images full-size and implemented them into the tutorial, and basically tidied it up real nice. It's really worth a download.

Here it is if anyone cares: http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=27752

Badmonkey: In my personal experience, everyone I have showed the MDPro to has got it working. I take it to my frds' houses and it never fails to work.

In My online experience, however, the percent is more like 85% works and 15% have problems. This data probably means the online people are doing something wrong, missing a small step, or are just unlucky and it doesn't work for them for one reason or another. So far, there has been no solid determinants to see if the trick will work or not. Some people say Only Pioneer and NEC drives work, others say their flea market junkers work. Some people say it's the Ritek DYE used in their Mini-DVD's that does the trick, others say no-name brand from the store does the trick as well. PAL/NTSC makes no diff either. So My guess is if you follow the tutorial carefully nothing will go wrong. Most of the people asking q's here don't have the MDPro yet, the ones that do usually don't have problems. Most questions are pre-buying questions like yours.

No, their is absolutely no lag issues with this exploit. All games run at 100% speed and 100% sound like a 1:1 of the original.

And your welcome to anyone who has found this tutorial useful, that's what it's there for :)

I know it's off topic, but is there a thread for the best GameCube games on ADawn? I'm a big fan of RPGs and action games. Time to start loading up on 'em =)

or had anyone ever tried to copy to a large size DVD-R and cut it enough to fitted in the gamecube? i did this with a sharp scissor, but didn't have a gamecube with this method to test out.

well you have to think that might not be a good idea .. you would have to make it perfect or it would be just like a unbalanced tire on your car and you might also run the risk of parts of the dvd coming off and messing up the inside of the gamecube

wow, i didn't thaught of that happening, but the cut was good and it doens't seen like any of the pieces would fall. And for the cutting, well it seens like the gamecube space was big enough even if is it a little bigger than the original sized. Hopefully someone willing to try to see if this method works, cuz mini dvd are more expensive than the bigger size.

brucedlx, thank you for sharing your guide on how to boot backups with the MD pro.

I did it and it works great. I have burned 4 games, and 3 work flawlessly.

I am using Ritek G04's and a SONY DRX-810UL Burner and Nero Burning ROM SE

MY WORKING GAMES:

Resident Evil 4
Auto Modellista
Mario Party 7

NON-WORKING GAMES:

Call of Duty 2

Can anyone help me, the game boots and the main menu works but then when I go to load the mission I get a error saying that the disc can't be read. The only thing I did diffent is I named the disc "Call of Duty 2" instead of "New" what it was origanaly set at.

Ninjapath: 1 person here has reported that Standard Size DVD-R does not work for him, however it's the only time I have heard such a thing. Then again it's not really worth it to buy a replacement lid because if you do, you might as well buy a mod-chip because you are going to have to open up your gamecube anyways. Might as well stick a chip in there while you are at it, it's not much more expensive than the Max Drive Pro.

Also, cutting a normal size DVD-R with snips is like throwing it in the garbage. It is impossible to finalize the disc properly and it is highly probable that you will not cut in a perfect circle and you could cause damage to your gamecube and burner for a disc that will never work anyways. Just drop the extra $ you would have to buy the replacement top w/ on some minidvdr and save yourself the trouble. Like I said before it's not worth getting a top replacement if your doing a softmod.

Mr-Cube:

Disc Read Errors (DRE) can be caused by many things.
Try these suggestions:

- Upgrading the firmware for their DVD Drive's has reduced the amount of DRE that some people have encoutered

- reduce burning speed, it has been reported that burning at 2x causes DRE for some people but when they burn at 4x or 8x there is no problems

- worst case scenario, you'll have to adjust your laser which can be alittle tricky, but don't try this unless all else fails.

WTH would *cut* a DVD to fit it in their gamecube? Ridiculous! For that, just get a vipermod & be done with it....don't try to cut media. That's crazy!!

It took about 2 weeks

You can send a email to support@dateldesign.com and ask for a UPS tracking # to see where your package is at and when it should be there.

For those with DREs like mr-cube, there is an excellent writup about DREs at this site: http://modthatcube.pxn-os.org/main.htm

For those asking about MDP shipping questions- It took about 10 days to get to me via UPS and it shipped out of Florida. I emailed them a week after ordering for a tracking number. They replied 3 days later and I already had my MDP in hand. I have to say that this write up was excellent and prompted me to go this route over the streaming or chip route. I purchased Ritek G04 mini dvds from meritline and no coasters so far. By chance my dvd burner is an NEC 3500d. No need for a laser pot tweak (yet). No DREs with 4 of 4 backups working so far. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. It made the whole process go flawlessly. ONE NOTE WORTH MENTIONING: when I first put GCOS 1.5 onto the MDP and attemted to boot a disc, it was unsuccessful (black screen), another backup played but it was in black & white. I re-read the tutorial and noticed that I was not getting the three loading options mentioned in step 13. I went through the GCOS settings and noticed the default setting was set to "Force PAL" or something like that. Obviously that's a problem on my NTSC Gamecube. A quick change to Auto detect and everything works perfectly. Thanks again.

Also, if your .iso is not exactly 1,425,760 bytes long (I'm fairly certain that is the number) then your ISO has been "wiped" and you need to run wiped_gcm_fixer_v1.5 by loonycube on it before your burn it to a dvd-r. And be sure to "finalize CD" when you burn it. Just a few more things to look out for.

EDIT: the burn guide at the link I posted above has a different file length to look for but so far 15 out of 15 backups I have are the length I posted above and 5 out of 5 that I have tested have worked without running the wiped_gcm_fixer program on them.

Hey Bruce anyway you can write a tut about how to use the bba to make a "backup" using GCoS?

I could, but why do you want one? I strongly recommend against ripping your own games for many reasons:

- More expensive, you have to "buy" or "rent" games, which goes against the whole purpose IMO, not that there is anything wrong w/ that. Judging by the way you put "backup" in quotes, I'm guessing copies of games you already own is NOT your main concern, and going with the rules of this board, I would "have to advise you not to do it" (notice the quotes :P)

- Lot's of ways to make mistakes, waste Mini-DVDs, waste your own time, and put strain on your gamecube

- Added cost of buying a bba which are hard to find theses days

- Your comp and gamecube have to be in the same room, this is the reason I never got the BBA when the exploit was found years ago.

- It's really quite difficult.

You are much better off, as someone said previously, downloading proper released games from groups like starcube, mooncube, stinkycube or RARE, who have done it a million times and have it down to an art.
