umm correct me if im wrong but i was on my local target and saw a flyer that explain blue ray vs hd dvd and they all had the same specs except that blue ray has 5x the compacity of a dvd as where hd dvd only has 3 , now what is next gen stuff requires???? more gb size to work with video's/games and such , just cuz hd dvd is called like that it does not nessary mean its high defination its high intensity digital versital disc

so i think blue ray wins the war

BD can hold up to 50 Gb on a Double-layer BR disc, whereas HD-DVD can hold about 30 Gb. However, HD-DVD apparently uses better video compression.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

apprently if you conpress a file it shortns the quality , likewise with DVD5 back ups vs a DVD9 you always get better if you have more space = less conpression = true hd see where i am going?

@dblbogey7: Just got off the phone with an ISF certified calibrator (recommended by my dealer) who does use Sencore hardware and software for 720p/1080i/1080p signal generation and analysis. He also prides himself with his audio/surround sound calibration. He'll give me a list of his rates by e-mail. Don't forget to let us know how you like (or dislike) the Panny BD player.

BR has the size and is lagging in getting tis stuff out (BR DL was jsut made stable 2 months ago)

HDDVD has it all going stable 2 and 3 layer discs good compression and codecs its on the ball ,this time next year whos know probably be neck and neck but as it stands now HD DVD is better.

Dont forget that you need a new BR drive to read a 4+ layer disc, thus hurting it,BR also has piss poor codecs BR right now only has the 25GB for single layer going for it.

HD DVD has 15/30 GB and have a DVD layer that can be used and its multi layer work better with current readers, basically HD DVD has its sht working,BR is still half on paper besides size wont matter if the cost is 3X as much as a 15GB disc.

There are a few 50 Gig dual layer BD releases already - Click and Unforgiven come to mind. Some of the BluRay releases have caught up with HD-DVD in terms of picture quality especially those released on both formats and presumably encoded from the same master and sometimes using the same codec. Tears of the Sun is an excellent transfer and surprisingly encoded in MPEG-2.

the format war will come...sony won last time, unfortunately. i hope a single format will arise and the other will be dropped soon.
I actually read that there is already a new format (media) on the way that can play both BluRay and HD-DVD, but for the life of me, I can't remember where I read it, but as soon as I find it again, I'll post a link.

Forgive the newbie question, but are there any other up and coming formats besides BlueRay and HD-DVD?

Nah not really just those two which will go to war for the next 5 years. And those Blu Ray burners cost 1 thousand(http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2475879&CatId=482), but prices will drop soon. Like always technology always advances no one will care about the old stuff.

Read the last 20 or so posts. It basically tells you all you need to know.
