@ddp
"2010" was also a novel. But Jupiter just does miss becoming a star. I do believe that it didn't possess enough hydrogen + mass to fire up the nuclear furnace. Hell Jupiter could be a brown dwarf.
Brown dwarfs are sub-stellar objects with a mass below that necessary to maintain hydrogen-burning nuclear fusion reactions in their cores, as do stars on the main sequence, but which have fully convective surfaces and interiors, with no chemical differentiation by depth. Brown dwarfs occupy the mass range between that of large gas giant planets and the lowest mass stars; this upper limit is between 75[1] and 80 Jupiter masses (MJ). Currently there is some debate as to what criterion to use to define the separation between a brown dwarf from a giant planet at very low brown dwarf masses (~13 MJ ), and whether brown dwarfs are required to have experienced fusion at some point in their history. In any event, brown dwarfs heavier than 13 MJ do fuse deuterium and those above ~65 MJ also fuse lithium. The only planets known to orbit brown dwarfs are 2M1207b and MOA-2007-BLG-192Lb
Maybe Auslander could elucidate.

I think what people are talking about in 2012 is a shift in consciousness and we are supposed to move from a fourth dimensional reality to a higher level.

True! Arthur C. Clarke was a scientifically aware person so he had to know that Jupiter lacked the mass to become a star even if it is made with the right stuff. We'll just call it alien power.
Even if fusion could be manually (or by alien) ignited its mass would probably not be enough for it to maintain main sequence. Without adequate mass to contain the pressure to blow outward Jupiter would probably do just that (just a guess, took some astronomy in college but not enough to really know what I'm talking about).

The world ended in 1999 at the turn of the millenium, and a few other times... If everyone keeps guessing, eventually someone may get it right. When it happens it happens. I'm among the group that doesn't want to see anyone help it along.

Just what constitutes the "End of the World"? The end of mankind- if so we are too hung up on ourselves, the end of all life on earth? The end of the physical Earth- the solar system goes on and the other solar systems in our Milky Way and all other galaxaies. Is it when Universe reaches absolute zero? Or a new big crunch and bang? I have always considered, when dying, one of the worse things is that you don't get to know what does happen, period.

You said it, awful music. Those nature lovers in the rubber boat need to be arrested for chasing porpoises. Just look at what they're doing to the marine environment not to mention all the fuel they're wasting while out there molesting the marine life.

OMG know I know the world will end before 2012 :)
Just imagine if people in charge of defense missiles talked like this or scientists. Before you know it bombs would be going off everywhere to due misunderstandings and we would be going backwards in evolution.

;) I don't worry about it as long as I can understand what's being posted. Marielmx3 had typos and was using abbreviated spelling with letters replacing words similar to what's being used for text messaging on phones. I understood the entire post though. Different groups through history have maligned the English language. Not many of us are using Old English. Shakespeare wouldn't be happy nowadays. Hear of Ebonics, Jive, or listen to any of the old hippy jargon? Phonics anyone? I'm like most of Gen X in the US with a preference for Standard American English (SAE). However, my mom didn't care much for some of my adjectives, verbs, and adverbs. LOL Guess there was a little bit of Carlin influence... Rest in peace. ;)
