I've recently begun having some coaters, burning with Nero after using DVDShrink.

On occasion I can go to the DVD folder and burn directly through Nero Burning ROM and succeed by using a slower write speed (2x). My burner's max speed is 4x. I know, I know, it's ancient by today's standards.

My question to all the gurus. Does this sound like the burner is gettting worn out. I've probably burned 700 DVDs with it and more than 1000 CDs. It's a couple of years old. It's a sony DUR 510A.

I've never had this problem before and it still burns CDs fine.

Thanks for any advice.

First try to burn a data folder to your DVD drive. Use an RW disk so that you may format it. After it burns open the folder on the data on the disk. For example burn a folder that contains pictures or burn the My Documents folder. It is just a test to see if the DVD laser is okay.

Since you state that the burner is a couple of years old, but make no mention of ever updating it's firmware, the fix could be as simple as updating it. The current version for your burner is 1.1a, you can get it from the the link provided;

Just download and run the update following any instructions given during the install. The update should provide added media support and possible enhancements which will help the burner perform better. I also recommend you try using verbatim disks rated at 8x and try burning at 4x speed.
