Hey mzr,
Note: You should have a DVD decoder (mpeg2 decoder) installed which allows the drive to recognize and play DVD disks.
1) Try uninstalling the drive in device manager:
To do that, open Device Manager as follows. Right-click on My Computer, select Properties, click on the Hardware tab, click on the Device Manager button, click on the plus sign to the left of DVD/CD-rom Drives, find your drive and right click on it, choose uninstall, then reboot. The drive will be detected by the OS and reinstalled. Recheck its operation.
2) I would see if a firmware update is available for your drive, this could help with reading DC/DVD disks correctly. You can have DVD Decrypter check for you like this (tools--drive--check for firmware updates...see pic), DVD Decrypter also displays the firmware version currently installed as well in the upper right side of its window:

Install the update if one is available, if after trying the above suggestions the drive still will not recognize DVD disks, it's possible that the drive could be defective.
The ripping process:
You could try ripping with DVDFab decrypter, its updated to keep up with new copy protection techniques. You can use it to rip the whole movie or just the main, after you can use your favorite burning app to burn the video files to DVD. Get it free here:

hi john,
thanks for the quick response, i forgot to mention that this problem only occurs on certain dvd discs, for eg should i copy an orginal dvd (hired) it works with no problem, do you still think my drive could be defective, i have it now for about 18 months but wrote over 300 dvd's, do you its tired.

Do you mean that this happens only when trying to read/backup from an already copied DVD? If so here are some possible reasons why:
You're using poor quality media
You're burning speed may of been too fast
You're drive's firmware is outdated
You're using shrink or decrypter to make a backup of a backup
Try:
Use good media supported by your drive. Try Sony, Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden..etc., or check with the drives website to see if they provide a supported media list.
When burning to disk, stick to a speed of 4x (not max) or 1/2 the rated speed listed for the media.
Make sure the drive's firmware is current, check and update as suggested above.
If you're going to make a copy of a copy use Nero, roxio, or whatever your favorite app is.
TRy using DVDFab to rip with, its very good and well supported unlike shrink or decrypter.
