Seeing as you've all helped me before to my dvd related problems I am hoping you can help me again as you lot are so much more inteligent than I am when it comes to computers.
I've never had this message before but after using dvd fab decrypter I use DVD Shrink but when the movie was 13% done encoding a message flashed on screen saying;
Dvd shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Programming error - exeption occured.
To me, that is like speaking a foreign language, so I have no idea what I am doign wrong or how I can correct the problem. I've asked my computer nicely to work but that doesn't help and tried shouting at it and that's no good either. Please help!

The disc I am trying to copy is Charmed, season 1 disc 1. I'll try your advice and hopefully will sort it out. I've just tried another disc and that works fine, so does that suggest it's the disc i'm trying to copy. I'm hopeless when it comes to these things!

I believe you must uninstall Fab as shrink does not work well with fab program. I saved the fab download, and uninstalled it right away after using it.then if i need again i can reinstall.

You don't need to uninstall Fab, I have it on my system, along with DVD Shrink, no problems, you can even use the output from FAB with dvd srhink.

Thanks for your advice. I've tried an older version of DVD Shrink and this time had this;
Dvd shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. CDVDCSS:: Read Failed! The reason is: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)
Any ideas

Try ripping the files to your hard drive using DVDFab Decrypter, then using the "open files" button on DVD Shrink and then copying from there if that doesn't work, let me know.

Hi claireann,
First:
Dvd shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Programming error - exeption occured
This is most likely caused by an encryption issue that DVD Shrink can't handle since shrink is no longer updated(going back to an earlier version won't help). Also, DVDshrink and DVDFab decrypter can co-exist on your PC without any conflicts.
Recommend you...
Use DVDFab Decrypter (see link below) first to do the ripping with, then open the files it creates using DVDshrink and process as you normally would.
Second:
Dvd shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. CDVDCSS:: Read Failed! The reason is: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)
This different error condition was most likely caused by reverting to an older version of shrink (I recommend installing and sticking to the most current copy), but here's some info on this error....
Possible causes for Data Error (cyclic redundancy check) are;
The disk is either badly scratched, diry/smudged in areas where info can't be read correctly, a bad press (digitally faulty), or copy protection shrink can't handle because of its discontinued support/advancement.
-If the disk looks dirty/smudged, clean it, then try again.
-If it's copy protection that's causing shrink to spit out the error... then try any one of these options:
1) DVDfab decrypter, it's a very good and supported free whole or main movie ripper/decrypter. Use it to rip the video files to your HDD, open the files ripped using shrink and proceed as you normally would.
DVDFab
http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm
2) Ripit4me, it takes the ripping/transcoding/and burning process and makes it a one click task. You'll need DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and FixVTS to make it all work.
Ripit4me

3) Download and install the trial version of AnyDVD. Once installed, run DVD dhrink as you normally would to produce a backup, AnyDVD runs in the backround to crack the copy protection on the disk.

-If the disk is clean and any of the above methods fail, you could have a possible bad press, if so then you'll need to exchange it for another and try it again.

Thanks for all the advice. I've used dvd fab decrypter and still have the problem. When I tried to watch the dvd on my player it did freeze in one point and couldn't play it any further. The disc is scratched but when I cleaned it I managed to watch it but it is badly marked, so I'm guessing it could be that. I've used DVD Shrink tonight on two more dvds and it worked great. I'll see if i can get hold of another copy of the disc and then I'll know one way or another. You lot are brilliant at helping!

If you have more than one drive (i.e. a dvd-burner and a dvd-rom) you may want to try it in that to read the disc and see if that helps, ripit4me is a great program to help with troublesome discs too. If all else fails you may also see if a friend has a system you could try it on, reason being some lasers are pickier than others when it comes to scratches and smudges, other than that hope it does work out for you, a troublesome disc can be very frustrating to deal with.

not at all, DVDFab Decrypter (free) works great, then DVD Shrink will effortlessly work with the files output by DVDFab
