I've got a playstation with a DMS3 gone bad. The result is patchy lazer reliability.

I've been planning to get a network adapter and HD to get around the problem and salvage the console.

I've been able to play backups and original DVDs nearly problem free.

When I went to load programs like HDLoader and HD Advance I found that they wouldn't run. I've concluded my PS2 won't read CDs.

Is there anyway I can get a hard drive loader onto my memory stick without having to read a burnt CD?

I tried burning the files onto a DVD but that doesn't seem to work. It reads the disc (it seems) but the prog doesn't run.

Advice? Any help would be much appreciated.

you say your DMS has 'gone bad' if it's bad it's not going to boot a burnt disc period, you are a bit confusing with your posting, seams to me your laser is the issue, not the chip.

both the old HD Loader and the newer HD Advance come in a DVD format with the DVD TOC so use either of those.

KC36330 - Thanks for your reply. Really appreciate it.

To make a long story short. I had the DMS3 chip installed very soon after purchasing my PS2. Within 2 months the lazer burned out completely. I took it back to my installer who says he changed the lazer.

Since then the lazer has functioned very poorly. Only running certain discs and not well enough to keep up with most modern games.

Because of this I didn't play it for ages. Now that I've realised I may be able to resurrect it by playing games of a HD, I've been trying to get that set up.

I'm more than willing to puchase originals of HD advance or HD loader, but have only tried CD Iso 'backups' so far because I didn't want to spend the cash if it didn't work.

In doing this I've realised that it seems the lazer will not read CDs.

Now your title says you're a senior member so perhaps you have some wisdom to share!

1. With a new lazer might my PS2 work properly?

2. With pressed versions of HD advance/ HD Loader, my PS2 should be able to run them if they are DVD format, right? As it is right now about to run both originals and backups of DVD games and media discs.

3. If HD advance and HD loader are both DVD format originally, why do I only see CD ISOs for them online? Are there any 'trial' or 'test' versions of these around so I can try them to see if they work before buying?

Once again, really appreciate your help. Any advice you can offer will be of great use!

Cheers.

If you have a fat PS2 can't you just get a HDD and install some kind of elf file to the HDD or memory card so that you can boot games off the hardrive rather then using your laser and having to buy new ones ?

if the chip is functional you can load DMS Explorer/Harddrive Explorer on it and use that from Dev mode (hold triangle on boot) to then launch your HD Loader .elf it's been forever since i dealt with the DMS3s but I'm pretty sure they never came up with a way to launch the HD Loader .elf directly from Dev mode.

youngwun0 - That's exactly what I'd like to do. The problem being I can't currently find a way to load an elf to the memory card as my PS2 won't read CDs.

KC36330 - I've set up the DMS explorer in the past to run a media player and I've read about setting it up to run the HDD Explorer, but again, the lazer won't load the cd in order to install it on the card.

I think there is hope in the fact that the HD loader / HD advance seem to be on DVDs - though this may not help me load the launch files from a mem card.

if you've previously installed one or the other, it's still there, just use it to configure the loader.elf to your desired directory on the harddrive or the MC as well as launch it.

I have the DMS Explorer on the memory card and it functions fine. I've only every used it to boot the media player. But I don't think I can use it to access a HD, only to load programs.

I don't know how I can get the HDD Explorer installed.

With the lazer unable to read CDs I don't know how I can:
1) Install the DMS3 HDD Explorer onto the memory card
2) Load ELFs onto the hard drive or memory card

I have to admit I'm new to the ELF stuff. I don't really know what they're for or what I can do with them. I just feel like I'm a bit stuck right now, and I'm not sure what to do next.

Should I just try to get HD loader or HD advance? Is that my only option? Where can I get them?

Thanks mate. You're advice is invaluable.

Use DMS Explorer to launch the HD Loader elf, the loader elf will access the harddrive for gaming purposes. i don't recall if explorer has USB capability to use a pen drive or not, if not then use a friends console to transfer the files from CD to your memory card with a gameshark/action replay/codebreaker file manager.

just for a moment let's think about what you just asked............

you want a program that will launch from the harddrive, that launches the harddrive.......

if you were able to already launch from the harddrive to launch that application, why would you then want to use that application to re-launch it again??? the only way to boot the harddrive without the use of the CD/DVD drive is via a chip that supports Dev mode or with the DMS4 with Toxic OS installed.

wats all this stuff on exploiting the MC to make it load the hard drive am i interpritating this correctly.

I follwed the steps on this website (http://exploitstation.com/articles/armax_exploit_usb/ARMaxExploitUSB.html)

but i hit another problem i was unable to run my action replay max disc as my playstation dont read the disc anymore (the whole point of me doing this).

Can someone tell me if i put this file on my memory card will i be able to load the hard drive without a HD Loader CD/DVD as i can use a friends computer to upload the file from my max pendrive to my memory card

The memcard exploit is useless for all of you.
You would need a Playstation 1 game to trigger it.
That DMS4 with Toxic OS sounds like it would work.

yeah the exploit only works if your console will read the PSX trigger disc and you can't exploit a slim console, they don't look at the memory card when booting a PSX game. most any of the top of the line chip is able to boot Dev mode and will launch an elf off the memory card or as mentioned and what would be my recommendation is the DMS4 Pro SE with Toxic OS 0.41

Im guessing by chip u are reffering to the mod-chip that lets u play copied games. I have a duo 3 modchip installed on my ps2, will i be able to do what you are talking about and if so is there a guide (pref, simple guide as i am a newbe to all this elf launch and exploiting stuff)

Thanks for your comments everyone. I feel like I'm getting somewhere.

I have a DMS3 chip and have used the dev.olution mode to boot a media player. Can I run HDloader/HDadvace from that mode off a memory card?

Can anyone help me set that up? If I could get that working, I could forget the disc drive altogether. It's hanging on by a thread right now.

I'd really appreciate any help I could get on this.

Cheers guys.

with the DMS3 you'll have to rename the HDLoader elf file to boot.elf and place it in the /boot/ directory of the memory card for the DMS3 to launch it in Dev mode.

KC36330,

I was thinking of using the HDD explorer to run an ELF of hdloader. I've tried installing the HDD explorer off a CD and a DVD with no success.

What if I could use my pc to put these files directly onto the hard drive? That must be possible, right?

If so, do you have any idea what kind of file/directory structure would be needed on the hard drive to make a go of it?

I would have to have HDD explorer on there and then the ELF for the other software I need to be able to run.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks.

if you are having problems with installing HDD Explorer it wouldn't work with pre Flash v1.8

also you will need the program to access the harddrive so having it installed on the drive isn't going to be much use to you about installing the program :)

what sort of problems are you having with getting it to install???
after you burn the ISO to disc (CD based) it should then boot in the console as a PS2 game. you then will be prompted to install HDD Explorer and if you select OK it should then install (memory card installed into Mc0/) you then hit reset (with the disc still in the drive) while holding 'Start' on controller 1 and it'll then boot HDD Explorer allowing you to install the other applications off the same disc. (the emulators and tools)
