on the drop down menu where it says DVD5(4.7GB), click the arrow and click on custom, then you should be able to set the output file to the size of your choice. hope this helps

Hmmm... why (or custom) to 4360MB only? I went as far as 4465MB and sometimes with big (long) movie like "Pirates Of Caribbean 2 Dead Man's Chest, King Kong, etc.", I had mine custom to 4470MB, leaving roughly 12MB behind only. Surprisingly, all of my backups played smoothly without any issue at all.

It's true, you're suppose to leave few extra room by avoiding getting too close to the edge. Yes, that's when I first learned how to burn and backup DVDs, but "that was then and this is now." I've learned that "it's not necessary" true if you're using 1st class media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or Hitachi Maxell (MIJ). The truth is if you're using top notch media, then you're safe to go with 4465MB (or DVD Shrink and Nero Recode's "default" standard DVD5). However, the choice is yours.

I guess I'm totally opposite from most of the members here, a lot of members seem to favor the 4360MB. However, I like to get as much spaces as I can to gain quality on my backups, therefore I customized and preferred to the max.

more daring than me also. i too only use top notch media but my fat fingers aren't always as precise as they should be, so i'm still with 4300MB from olden times. but each to their own, i'd rather have a tiny gap at the edge personally buy hey :P

But you will sleep much better at night knowing that you've left a little extra room for compression.

I go for the old 4400mb. Saves the media from fingers getting them out of cases. Main reason is the ink presseing evenly to the edge but with good media that should not be an issue.

Don't you hate it When people say, "It's always in the last place you look". What the HELL??? Of course it
is. Why the HELL would you keep looking for it after you've already found it?

@born2ride

You're welcome. Hope you feel better now. As long as you don't go beyond 4465MB, you're 100% safe with 1st class media.

Best of luck!!

Did you customized before burning? You should be able to "customize" to 4465MB with 1st class media like Taiyo Yuden, Vertabim or Hitachi Maxell (Made In Japan). It shouldn't be "grayed out." Here's how to customize, just in case if you need it; this is in prior to transcode via DVD Shrink. I've been using DVD Shrink tons and tons in the past and it never grayed out on me (I used to love DVD Shrink, matter of fact I still got love for DVD Shrink, but it's a bit slower than Recode only).

(1) once DVD Shrink is launched
(2) click on Edit, then Preferences
(3) under Target DVD size, Arrow down to "custom" and type 4465MB, then click OK

Let me know how it goes, keep us posted.

Although Recode is a bit faster I still prefer Shrink's AEC flexibility, Recode uses it but it's set at Shrink's default "Sharp".

For transcoding interlaced material the "Maximum sharpness" setting works well, producing a nicer end product than Recode.

@Mystice

Have you tried the new Nero Recode AEC changer by Solomon? You should give it a shot, it's pretty simple, just 2 clicks and your done. It's basically the same as DVD Shrink, you can set it at your desire. I primarily used "Advanced Analysis + HQSR + Assign Best Quality to Main Movie" via Recode and pretty much satisfied with the quality so far due to less compressions like 25% -> 35% that needs to be transcoded (meaning 75% -> 65% of quality ratio).

Ahh.......

Cool, looks like just the ticket to Recode perfection.

A quick question I like being able to 'Set default streams' with Shrink, usually to start with the subtitles on when I start the DVD (I'm a movie only guy). Recode doesn't seem to have this option.

You're welcome buddy and no problem. Keep us posted, if you're in doubt then simply ask.

There are few nice members if not a lot that are willing to help, to name few of them: creaky, locoeng, arniebear, binkie, laddyboy, dialysis1, Car.Mike and JaguarGod (haven't seen him for a while, but he knows what he's doing).

Best of luck!!

Nero Recode is a transcoder (compressing DVD files to fit into any single layer DVD-R, DVD+R or DVD+RW disc). It is also a converter engine (i.e. DVD to MP4 or MPEG-4 to Ipod or Zune).

As for ImgBurn, it's an burning engine, one of the best ISO image or VIDEO_TS free burning tool. ImgBurn is created by LUK of DVD Decrypter, he updates this awesome tool once in a while. Check it out if you can, this little free tool can do so much.

I'll say "both" because I use both; Recode is one of the fastest transcoder and ImgBurn is the best ISO image burner. However, Recode is "not" free though, unless Nero came with one of your DVD burner when you purchased it.

Best of luck!!
