I want to play backups without destroying my laser

I've got a preowned PS2 and I've been playing backups with Swap Magic 3.6 and Slide Tool.
At first I had some problems with the backups not reading well because I'd burnt them at 8x.
After re-burning them at 2.4x I got much better compatibility but still not perfect.
Singstar has been the most troublesome, but I've had some problems with Tony Hawk 8 and recently a lot of trouble with Mortal Kombat Armageddon.
Last night MKA had a problem and was stuck in a loading screen. I left it for about 10 minutes to see if it would pull through but it didn't.
Now today when I try to play anything, even original discs, I get a lot of whirring and eventually a Disc Read Error.
Is my laser dead? Is there anything I can do about it without breaking the warranty seal?

My cd's also started to do that (i burned at 16x), but all i did was reboot and it worked fine for me. Ive noticed that the Swap Magic DVD discs get scratched pretty fast.

Well I left it turned off with the power cord out for a whole day and it still has the same problem. Looks like it is dead.
Luckily I have a warranty, so I can get it replaced but I'd really like to know what might have caused this so I can make sure it doens't happen again.
The media I've been using is TDK DVD+R with an ID of TDK 003 I think.
My local shops sell those and also Imation and Verbatim.
I've heard that Verbatim are one of the best brands so maybe I should use them from now on...

Cheap media will kill your laser alot sooner than really good media...
Use Verbatims and burn at half the max speed so for 16x media burn no faster than 8x
If you're going to get another used fat PS2 and you have some extra cash I'd go get a Network Adaptor and a Hard Drive
Download Hdloader and use the laser as little as possible...
If a game isn't compatible with HDloader you at least have your Swapmagic to fall back on...

I'm thinking maybe I'll try to get my money back on the used fat PS2 and go buy a brand new slim one, get a 3 year warranty, get some Magic Keys Pro V3 and use only Verbatim discs.
It should last alright then shouldn't it?

I'm not sure how good the newer PS2's are as far as the laser and backups go.. PS2's aren't really meant to play backups , if they were Sony wouldn't equip them with such cheap parts.. Verbatims are the way to go as far as good media but that doesn't mean that the laser doesn't strain at all reading a back up.. If you're going to spend $50 or more to buy a new PS2 compared to a used older PS2 I'd go with the Old PS2 and a HDD / Network adaptor HDLoader combo like I said no strain on the laser that way and if you need to play from Disc you still have Swapmagic to do that...
I had my Ver 4 PS2 for 5 years never had a problem with it.. Never had disc read errors or anything. I bought Swapmagic / Fliptop and 6 months later my PS2's laser went on me.. I was using Good Media .. Could've just been time for it to die but it also could've been because I started playing backups.. I'll never know for sure..
So I bought a ver 7 and I already had the Network Adapter got me a hard drive and Hdloader and I haven't used Swapmagic much since...
I also like the fact I can just turn on my PS2 go through a list of my games , choose one and start playing. No need to swap discs.. It's great I love it...
I've also noticed alot of people in the threads have been having problems with Swapmagic and the newer PS2's so that's another reason I wouldn't go new

So if I go for the HDD option, do I need a specific brand of HDD or just any old IDE one?
I'll need a Hard Drive, a Network Adapter, any other special hardware?
I have computer, router, network cables etc.
[Edit]
I've had a bit of a look around and found out a bit about HDAdvance and USBeXtreme. Is the compatibility better on one or the other?
For HDAdvance I'd need an HDD and a Network Adapter but for USBeXtreme I'd just need a USB HDD wouldn't I?
I've had a quick look around and it looks like I can get a Network Adapter for AU$69, but I can get a USB housing for only about AU$50.

You can actually use a Hard Drive larger than 200gb
here is a web site to look up HDD Compatibility
http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=list
HDLOADER is the software you'll need and since you have swapmagic you can d/l it from here
http://sksapps.com/index.php?page=hd.html
You can make a Memory Card Exploit with a PSX Game as a trigger disc or you can boot HDLOADER from CD with Swapmagic
Personally I use the MC Exploit
you can find all the software & Tutorials you need from that site
So all you need is
Network Adpator
Hard Drive
Memory Card
Playstation 1 Game
Swap Magic Discs
everything else can be downloaded

I don't have a PSX game.
I already ordered and payed for HDAdvance discs but it seems I won't need them after all?
After I've got it all set up with the hard drive will there be a way to play without using the PS2's DVD drive at all or will I still need a Swap Magic, HDAdvance or PSX disc?

Hdloader is better than HDAdvanced (they are the same thing but HDloader is updated online) you'll still need to use the laser a little bit but just enough for the PS2 to read the trigger disc (PSX disc) for a sec or so.. Any PSX game will do . You can usually find those at any game store for a few bucks or maybe one of your friends has one you can have.
or you can just boot the swapmagic and swap for the HDLoader disc you d/l and make but that can be a pain in the but

that depends the quality of the media ,the speed that you burn the disks, how many hours do you play non-stop
but swap magic is a pain in the a$$ the best choice is a hard disk

what would happen with the swap magic? those last pretty long, i don't mind swapping discs time to time. Lets see, if you use high quality verbatim s, play 4 times a week, use swap magic, how long? Cause really, i wouldn't know.

To those who want to know how long it takes to kill your laser, I've been using TDK media which is supposedly fairly good, and I've killed two PS2s in less than a month each. They were pre-owned so I don't know what sort of condition they were in before I got them, but they at least played properly when I got them, and less than a month later they wouldn't play anything.

Is there a difference between PAL and NTSC Network Adapters?
I'm having trouble finding a Network Adapter in Australia (PAL) and most of the ones on eBay are from America (NTSC).

Not sure about that one... I think that PAL and NTSC is basicly for the video mode of the PS2 and nothing to do with how a network hooks up....
I could be wrong.. Anyone know for sure?

Well I ended up buying one from a UK seller on eBay.
It was only the one online store in Australia that specified that their adapter was PAL, all the ones on eBay don't mention PAL or NTSC so I assume there isn't a difference.

There shouldn't be a different between network adaptors. that hardware is all the same.
As for psx disk, you shouldn't have any problems finding one. Unless you live in the boonies, there should be a shop that has some still. I even know of a gamestop that has about 300 psx games that are still selling (all less then $7, most just a buck or 2). Halfprice books has a whole bunch of psx games they are selling for $1 or $2.
Trust me, take the time to find the psx disk, it's worth it. Even though I have AR and I can use that to run elfs, nothing is faster then using the mc exploit to load elfs. I have it set to just load a menu, and I have all the elf files on the usb thumbdrive.
A lot faster then booting up ar (which seems to take a long time on my system, compared to games), then it has to load the media player, then I finally get to choose my elf.
MC, it's turn the ps2 on, then about 30 seconds later I have the menu up, if that.

Well, at worse, if you wanted to send me a SASE that could hold the psx game, i'd send you one. You'd just have to make sure that it has the correct postage on it, so it can make it thru the mail.

Well, my adapter arrived and I bought a Seagate 320GB drive to go with it.
It's all working beautifully with the retail version of HDAdvance 3.0
Every game I've tried so far has worked perfectly.
I haven't tried God of War yet though.
