Of course to use Toxic OS you need a DMS4 pro installed.
A little history .....
HDL was the original app designed to allow users to back-up there games to an HDD inside their PS2's. The disc was pressed like an original so you didn't need to have a modchip in order to boot back-ups. Sony didnt like this at all and canned the project. It want long before people hacked the HDL disc and extracted the elf from the disc. This elf could be booted with console that had modchips installed either from a burnt CD-R or from the PS2's own memory card with chips that had dev1 mod like the MI and CC chips. It wasnt long after this that people (coders) started to hack the elf for better compatibility. Patches where soon being released and the HDL project was now alive once again but underground.
Not long after this we started to see other company's take these patched versions of the HDL elf and once again press them to a disc for people with out mod chips to use .... thus was born HDAdvance (HDA). So HDA is nothing more then the patched version of HDL stolen and exploited to make a profit.
If your not wanting to use a modchip then I would suggest HDA but you would bet a more dynamic solution with the combination of a modchip (like the MI or CC) and the patched HDL. Then you wouldn't be paying for HDL and your money that was going to go to HDA will now go to a modchip. Booting HDL with a modchip like the MI or CC you dont need a disc in your console at all to boot HDL and play back-ups from your HDD, Also the current patched HDL is as compatible and Toxic OS is. On a side note the creator of Toxic OS is the same guy that originally created HDL ... bless his hart.

Well in a round about why I guess you could. You could use HDA to install the exploit. From there you could boot ULE and then you could boot any emu for the PS2 you like from ULE.

I don't think I said anything about swap magic :) ... no you should be able to do the exploit all with HDA. have a look at exploit station.

But, if you dont have HD Advance, download the "Free HDloader" and use the swap method accordingly, using the Swap Discs. This is just an alternative and I've saved about 40$ of additional software with this method.
With Swap Discs, you can play Backups Directly.
With HDAdvance or FreeHDloader (to my knowledge, however) you HAVE TO save the game onto the HDD of the PS2 on order to PLAY THEM(which takes less than 30 MINUITES). In some cases, such DVD Media with Hi-Storage (meaning DVD-9 or DVD-DL) may ot be ripped onto the PS2 Correctly [i.e Grand Turismo 4 will not be booted on the Harddrive. THere is a tedious tutorial on the net that allows you to patch the .iso on your COMPUTER, which takes up even more time).
So, if your gonna put .iso's on the PS2 HDD, do it in your computer (if you can).

Format your PS2 HDD in you console.
Stick it in your computer (just unplug one of your Disc Drives and connect using the IDE Ribbon cable, dont forget to plug in the power cable too)
Download and run Wiinhip.
Drag & Drop .iso's into the window.
Place HDD in your Ps2 Again, run HDloader or HDAdvance.
Choose game..... play!

That's unnecessary, WinHIIP will format the drive for you, even with Toxic OS format if need be.

Toxic OS is FREE, but it only works with the DMS4 Pro SE chip so you're looking at about 50 bucks for the chip.

yes, about 95% of all games are compatible off the harddrive with Toxic OS v0.41, with HD Advance/HD Loader the percentage is a bit less.

The patched HDL is free and can be used with ANY CHIP and is also 95% compatible with all games. You can evn use HDL with the exploit which is a 100% free way of booting HDL with your V1-V11 PS2.
Or better yet get a reliable chip like the CC or MI and boot HDL from either your MC, USB pen drive, or HDD inside your console.
Have fun with what ever choice you make!

how on earth could you possibly interpret it to be more complicated?? with a chip you backup the disc, you put it in the DVD drive and it plays, it's about as idiot proof as you can get and it's 100% compatible with every game where as your HD Advance 3.0 is NOT.

and amazingly as it is, a DMS4 Pro SE with Toxic OS has exactly that.........plus all the advantages of a modchip (because it is one) plus a built in gameshark/action replay device AND GET THIS it'll boot to a menu just like your HD Advance without ever having a disc in the drive, hell you can even take the DVD drive out and toss it and still be able to boot games off the harddrive ...... but there are many people like yourself out there who can't see the forest for the trees and will continue to buy HD Advance because you know no different, that's why they have a market for it.
ps2modgod is gonna tell everyone on this board how the Matrix and the Crystal Chip are so wonderful and are hands down the best chips out there, but the truth is the DMS4 Pro SE is the more expensive of the 3 (by 10 bucks) and is still the top selling chip on the market.
