I keep making coasters at ~30% burn. I'm reading in the error log that DMA is not on which I suspect is the reason why. My drives are all set to ultra DMA 5 and the burner ultra DMA 2 on an ABIT NI8 mobo, so why is DMA supposedly off?

Well Nero claims DMA is off but that program is showing reasonable transfer rates (47-70 MB/s max) and it says the HD's are on ultra DMA 5 or 7.

Those are good transfer rates and obviously DMA is on for your HD's so I would assume your opticals are also. Nero seems to not be able to read Nvidia chipsets correctly. I've seen a few examples of this when folks run Nero InfoTool.
You might want to explore other options.
Have you ever had successful burns? What media are you using?

Well I have had problems with this drive before. Originally when I first built the pc, but after a windows reinstall the drive worked fine for quite a long time. Im using fujifilm 16x -R disc. I getting close to exploring one option that I am familiar with, hitting the drive repeatedly with my fist :-).

This sometimes works as a last resort and can be aided with cursing at the top of your lungs...LOL

There are also two sections there in device manager that list the DMA status...the top one being transfer mode, which tells you what you would like the drive to be in and the bottom one is current transfer mode, make sure this one corresponds with the top one. Have you tried resetting the DMA anyway? Look into the advice given my Mystice as well.

Makes sense.
You could give this app a shot (it's an excellent information utility). Under Hardware click on the 'Drives' icon then in the right pane click on the upper entry 'Number of CD ROM drives', then under information check 'UDMA Mode Enabled' and see what it says.

You may also just want to just go to Device Manager, find the burner, uninstall it and reboot.

I updated the firmware which reinstalled the driver, didn't seem to help. My device manager actually looks different than what i have seen from everyone else's. Heres a pic of the pane.

In the Pc Wizard their is no option for cd-roms, just SCSI Host #0 for my parallel drives and SCSI Host #1 for my SATA. The info reads
Device Information #3 :
Type : CD-Rom
Specification : ATA/ATAPI
Manufacturer : BENQ
Name : DVD DD DW1650
Revision : BCDC
Transfert : 8-bit
Bus : 8-bit
Multi-Port : No
Normal ACA : Yes
Connected : Yes
Address : 0:3:0

What a drag, seems like all utilities will have to be re-written to able to diagnose/check what used to be so simple, and the Nvidia stuff seems to be the most perplexing. Think I'll be sticking with VIA on my next rig anyway.
