After many posts and disapointments on the sony forums i think i figured out why some movies show vertical whitish bars when a movie shows dark blue or black screens. The fix is simple! The ps3 has a dvd option called Image Quailty Adjustments and is turned up to 2 by default on both options! (This is bad)

Pop a dvd in and play it as it plays hit triangle then goto Image Quailty Adjustments to Turn Frame Noise Reduction and Block Noise Reduction to off and you will see the vertical bar disapear as you hit X to save the settings. Im not positive it fixes it completly but i think this is whats causeing people's problems. Please sony set this to off by default on your next patch. Turning them to 3 will help you see the vertical lines im talking about even more. Cant believe after all this tim i found the fix myself i hope this helps more then just me!
Heres a link to my orginal post with Pictures! please take a look.

Xeno I cannot find this option anywhere on my PS3. I have the latest 1.32 Firmware version and I have searched all menu's and option on both the system and the disc menu. When there is a DVD in the drive and playing, I hit the Triangle button but the menu has no option for "Image Quality Adjustment". I have an ISF Calibrated 34" Sony XBR CRT and the line during playback is making any movie un-watchable (One I see an error I can't see anything else /shrug). I have the system connected via HDMI. Any further ideas? Thanks.
Oh, I also tried using the ground lift adaptor on the power cord as some other threads have discussed and that did not (as suspected) solve the issue.

The option is on the DVD menus as the movie is playing.

yeah I searched everywhere, and the DVD menu (pressing triangle when the disc is playing) and do not have that option. Could it be because I am using an HDMI to DVI adaptor? I may try using component cables and see if it become an option in the DVD menu then. Thanks!

With further testing I found the following. The "Image Quality Adjustment" menu is not accessible while viewing a Blu-ray DVD (which was all I was watching). It can be accessed when playing Standard DVD's. Also, It did not correct my problem. My problem is a faint verticle bar of light that travels right to left horizontally across my screen. This can even be seen with the PS3 Menu. It may be my DVI-HDMI adaptor. I am ordering the PS3 Component cables now. More to come.

If the line is MOVING then it is a grounding problem. The ps3 was very rushed and it cant handle alot of ground enterfearance. Plug it into a grounf 3 to 2 adapter OR get a old power strip surge protector and tear its ground prong off and plug ur ps3 into it. thay IS a ground problem. check this thread http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.i

It was actually a frequency sync issue with my Sony CRT. It was a known issue when running 1080i sources. I had already tried the ground lift adaptor you mentioned so I knew it couldn't be that. Anyhow, a service menu adjustment on my Sony television took care of the issue and the line is completely gone so I'm really enjoying my PS3 now. Also worth noting that the "Image Quality Adjustments" are only available when playing a standard DVD and not a Blu-ray disc. Thanks for all the help Xeno!

If anyone is having a similar issue, the resolution can be found here http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=190083&page=2
