I backed-up a TV series using 4 DVDs. Out of which only 2 will play on my DVD player but all plays on my PC. WHat's the deal? The 2 problem DVDs froze my DVD player. Something I'd never seen happen before. They start OK with the warning messages etc but then goes blank. Doesnt make it to the menu.
What caused this? Has anyone here with their vast IT experience & knowledge come across this problem, can help me out?

There could be few possibilities:

* media
* encrypted structure

Out of curiosity, what tools/software did you ripped with?

I assume the TV series is converted from possibly mpeg (from TV tuner) to VOB. There could have been an error in conversion with whatever software you use. Also the map of the DVD (the transition between menu to video) could be altered or corrupt some way.

I have thoughts in my "head"

Sorry I should have provided some more details. I used DVD Shrink. I have never needed to use anything else along with Shrink before. I dont think I would know how to either!
They are TV series but they were on DVDs. If there was a problem with the dics then it wouldnt have played on the PC, right?

@jay2412

Nowadays, DVD Shrink alone can not handle any of the newer released, so you'll need either DVDFab Decrypter or RipIt4Me (both are FREE and really easy to follow).

In case if you needed any help or guides, simply follow/read and try any from 2 of the best FREE rippers below.

Rip any DVDs with RipIt4Me +DVD Shrink + ImgBurn
Revised DVDFab +VobBlanker (or FixVTS) +DVD Shrink guide

NOTE: If using DVDFab Decrypter method, simply skip VobBlanker or FixVTS, unless DVD Shrink has encountered an error and can not continue.

If DVD Shrink has any errors, you'll need to do one of the following:
(1) process the ripped files (VIDEO_TS.IFO) through VobBlanker
(2) process the VOB (or VTS files) with FixVTS.

Best of luck!!

If the disk was faulty in any way it wouldn't be readable in a computer.
Did you change any of the preferences in DVD Shrink?
Is the disk "region free"

DVDs can have a faulty press and still play with no obvious errors when watching the video on a player, on a PC or a standalone. I've had this happen on a few occasions. If there's enough of the bad sectors, it will stop recording software dead. A scan of the disc for read/write errors with something like DVDInfoPro, Plextools, or Nero (toolbox) will show if that is the problem. It doesn't happen often, but it happens.

You have 4 backups,which play on your pc,but 2 of them won't play on a stand alone player?

Sounds like a stand alone player issue-picky player?

1)What's the brand name/format/and speed rate of your blank dvd media? The MID code would help.
2)How fast did you burn them?
3)You ripped with DVD Shrink,what program did you burn with?
4)What's the brand name/model#/and current firmware version of your burner?
5) Are you slapping any paper/sticker labels on them?

Use neroinfotool or dvdidentifier to locate this info like: Model#,firmware version,and the MID code of your blank media.

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_..._identifier.cfm

With the picky players,and lot of things will cause them fits:

Compression
Burn speed
Burning outer edge of disc
Low quality/crap media-which it the usual culprit.
Burn engine
Burner qualityy-may need firmware update or could be a crappy burner.
Multi-tasking
paper/sticker labels
Fragmented Harddrive/s

Dirty laser lens-on the drive that shows the issues,once it is ruled the culprit.

The DVD-RW drive that burns a backup,should play it on the pc. The quality should look near original in quality. After that,the stand alone players factor in. All those possibilities I listed are just some of the things that can trigger playback issues on picky stand alone players: Pixellation,Freezing,Jumping,Skipping, and No disc errors.

Being a TV series,the compression may be very high on a few of those discs,why 2 of them play and 2 won't.

If compression is the problem, using the Quality Settings in Shrink should help. I've not run into any factory DVDs with too much content for it. At the higher compression I prefer Rebuilder. You can use the included Hank's Encoder. That way the whole Rebuilder setup is free. The retail Rebuilder Pro has more user friendly options, but retail means money. LOL For ripping the free RipIt4Me does a good job. DVD Decrypter and ImgBurn and Nero all burn ISO, Nero has to be burn ISO manually with Shrink output. It burns auto with file output and is the default burner with Nero Burning ROM. I'm going to far off the compression, use settings and programs if compression is high. The general rule is if the compression goes over 20% go to an encoder like those used with Rebuilder. Up to that Shrink is good, in fact probably is little beyond.

Like Saugmon said, slow down burn speeds, but first go over his checklist of things to do (firmware) and things not to do (label stickers = bad balance). I'll have to say multi-tasking is optional depending on the system. No if you have an older single core. If you have a newer dual core with plenty of system resources you can do a lot more. Until dual cores I wouldn't recommend multi-tasking while doing dvd backups. With my current system I use Rebuilder, surf the net and do almost anything I want and still get good backups. I multi-task while burning (burns limited to 6X). I'll have to admit I don't have the average PC. So, when having problems, follow saugmon's advice and don't multi-task till you find the source of your problem. If single core, don't.

just passing thru..My dvd PC is 'only' an Athlon 2800XP and i used to multitask a lot during the ripping/encoding/transcoding/whatever stage it's called in DVD Shrink, but not during the actual burning stage. Never was a problem for any of my movies though these days i don't have to multitask on that PC much as i have a few other PC's on the go.

I have had this problem before with the latest disks mainly using this new Sony encryption. The only way I can overcome this is by using DVD Decrypter and copying the disk as an ISO image, then shrink it with DVD Shrink.

By themselves the decryption software in DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink are obsolete (out of date). There's a less painful and more successful method of handling the new (sony) copy protection which includes the software being discussed. Use RipIt4Me in the 1 Click mode. If you think you'll have problems, look over this simple guide. http://webpages.charter.net/bacitup/TheGuides/pacman777guide.pdf
