I have been using dvdfab fixtvs shrink and Nero. It goes through fab fine, and fix tvs' even shrink, but when I save it as an iso/image it stores on my hard drive as a file. Unworkable with Nero. There must be some new protection out there. Any advice would be appreciated.

You shouldn't have set Shrink to create an ISO file to the HD, if you wanted Shrink to burn it automatically. If you want to burn automatic with Nero, go into your burn settings and make sure your burner drive is listed in the dropdown window. The drop down menu shows Burn with Nero and your burner drive if it isn't the current selection. There's other choices there which include create an ISO and burn to the hard drive (which you are doing). Burning ISOs with Nero is no problem. You can burn the ISO you have without having to load DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn. Both are free, but not needed if you have Nero. Shrink just don't set Nero to burn a ISO automatically. Open Nero Express, select Image, Project, Copy, and then select Disc Image or Saved Project. ISO is a Disc Image. Then browse to the ISO, select it and follow the burn process. I burn ISOs with Nero all the time. To view an ISO on the PC you have to load it in a virtual drive. Nero has one named Nero ImageDrive. Once the ISO is in the virtual drive, it can be played in a player (Nero ShowTime).
I forgot to mention something. If you like FixVTS, Shrink, and Nero, you can add DVD Decrypter (free) and Ripit4Me (free) and have a good setup for ripping and doing movies. RI4M uses those programs with a wizard or a 1 click method. You wouldn't need to use DVDFab Decrypter with it.

Thanks PacMan777-
Teach and learn eh! I will have to give your suggestion a shot. I've never done it that way. I have only created an ISO file once, and it wouldn't recognize it the normal way that I burn. So I just started over.

You're welcome
Quote: Teach and learn eh!
That's the way it works. We all gotta learn sometime. I learned from a manual a couple of years or so ago. I started with ISO files and the virtual drive software Daemon. I was learning DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink at the time. The manual suggested learning ISO and then do the file system. That was back when both were still supported and before the new Shrink. From there I saw similar apps in Nero. When I started creating ISOs for burning, I learned how well Nero Express works. A lot of people say Nero has gotten to big. If a person learns it good, there's a lot of good programs so you don't have to go to a lot of other individual programs.

Well, I haven't learned that much about Nero. I guess I should get one of the manuals you are referring to! I started making backups of DVDs quite a while back. Of course like everyone I started with a program. The original program I bought sucked because on almost every DVD it would take two disk to burn. I then got another program that worked a lot better. But with the newer DVDs and the encryption they have most of the DVDs I tried to backup would not work.
One day when I was on the Internet searching for software I ran across this forum. I started reading the information in the post, and then when I had a couple of problems some great members walked me through it. I learned about all of the free software, and some great software that you have to pay for. Because I was such a fan of DVD Decrypter and realized that it was not updated any longer, I did some searching on that. I found that if you bought AnyDVD and had DVD Decrypter set up the right way that you could decrypt anything. At first I didn't want to spend the money for AnyDVD, so I became familiar with DVDFab, VobBlanker, RipIt4Me, ImgBurn and ImgTool (Before the new ImgBurn came out!) not to mention a few others.
Needles to say I became familiar with being able to duplicate anything. After about six months of this I started helping people on here. I love it when I find out something new! It doesn't happen that often anymore so I'm glad that you mentioned the information about burning ISO with Nero. Personally I still burn VIDEO_TS folders.
Thanks again!

I burn both files and ISO. It sort of depends on the software and what I'm needing to do. If I do a bunch of backups at once I'll let the Rebuilder run in batch mode and create ISOs to one folder for burning later. Doing DVD5s I'll just decrypt and burn. I like the Nero Express better than the Nero Burning Rom. It's easy to access the right video burning sequence from the menu selections. A couple of clicks, browse the folder and you're burning. I've gotten so used to burning manually, sometimes I don't set programs to auto. There's still some things I can learn on Nero. There's so much in it, it's hard for a person to learn it all if they don't need to use it all.
That's a good collection of software you've collected. I've got most of those loaded and have used about all of them at one time or another. I've started using Rebuilder instead of Shrink, but I still rip with the AnyDVD and Decrypter and burn with Nero. Other than adding Rebuilder, I haven't changed my back up methods much in a while. I keep running into people who like AnyDVD and decrypter better than the ripper included in AnyDVD. I didn't see FixVTS on your list, but with VobBlanker, I don't guess you need it unless you decide to use the Ripit4Me.

@syxguns
I prefer VIDEO_TS better than ISO even though I've never had any issue with burning ISO (Disc Image) regardless if I used Nero Burning Rom/Express, DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn.
Why I choose VIDEO_TS over ISO? Simply because with VIDEO_TS (and its files IFO, BUP, VOB) I have more control over the movie/backup. That being said, I can "edit, strip, cut, blank, delete, etc." any thing that I don't need them by launching VobBlanker.
I know a lot of members despise Nero Burning Rom/Express in addendum to DVD burning due to other software/tools issue (conflict) with Nero. Regardless if it's ISO (Disc Image) or VIDEO_TS, most newbies (Nero & DVD Shrink forum) seems to be having a lot of burning issues (let alone those logs at the Nero forum). However, I can honestly say that either ISO or VIDEO_TS, I have no problem burning with Nero.
I think 99% it's the users at fault, in a simple way; if he/she knows what they're doing, then the most "common error/burning issue" should be solved completely. Most failed burns (errors) are either: cheap media, burning too slow or too fast, other tools conflict another (i.e. Roxio, InCD), firmware, DMA, etc.
Best of luck!!

LOL I agree with alkohol most of the problems are user interface with the problems occuring on the outside of the input devices. ;) No offense to anyone, "God bless the starving pygmies in New Guinea. Git-R-Done" -LTCG-. I make my own fair share of goof ups.

You appear to know your stuff, so don't sweat it. If you've been having good success, stick with what you've been doing.
It's always handy to learn something new. Take your time and do it right. From my experience, if a person understands the software and doesn't have conflicts built in, most of the burner software does good, VSO, Sonic, Roxio, Decrypter, ImgBurn, Pinnacle, and Nero. Who did I miss? Alkohol mentioned InCD and Roxio. The problem with Roxio was Drag to Disc which was similar to InCD. They're both batch software. Seems video recording apps don't like those. The reason is the batch writing software stays in contact with the burner and blocks the video recording apps from access. By the way, most burner suites have or had a similar app. I remember Pinnacle had one. Those usually have to be turned off or removed. With Nero, InCD had to be removed or not installed. Now I think you have to select InCD if you want it loaded. Early on it loaded as a default and the unsuspecting had a built in conflict. I had Roxio and I could turn off Drag to Disc and not have problems. Some people had problems with driver conflicts with some software and had to remove Roxio. So, there was more than just the software conflict with the batch writing software for some. It didn't happen to everyone. It varied by software installed. The old DVDXCopy had a long list of similar apps that caused interference. I started recording DVDs when DVDXCopy was about the only game going. Once I learned about interfering software, I had few problems with it.
alkohol is right about being able to edit with the files. In fact I rip in file mode. With the new copy protections a person sometimes needs to access the files with apps like FixVTS to correct for compliance as well as being able to edit. The files are there to work with as a person wants to. I don't create the ISO image till the last step and then burn. By then it doesn't matter if you burn Files or the ISO image. When you look at the finished product, you can't tell the difference. ISO just appears to be the more common burner format. The freeware burners are usually set up to burn ISO, ImgBurn and DVD Decrypter for example. Nero and VSO burn ISO also as well as files. Its been so long, I don't remember if Roxio does or not.

Yes, I've always recommended newbies (or others) to rip as "File Mode" or "VIDEO_TS," so you can edit, strip, blank/delete whatever you don't need to make the backup more superior when it comes to quality.
Back to "user interface," both InCD and Roxio has its own driver that's pretty notorious to conflict with Nero. I think some users needs to realize that when you put 2 pitbulls on the same cage, they're going fight until one surrender or dead (handicapped), this imply to InCD, Roxio and Nero. However, if the individual deemed she/he needs to keep them, then that's his/her choice.
Best of luck to all!!

alkohol & PacMan777-
you guys both made valuable points. I like the fact that alkohol agreed with the VIDEO_TS stuff. I have only converted to ISO one time. Now that PacMan777 taught me how to burn ISO, I wouldn't have a problem. However, I like the fact that I can edit the VTS & IFO files. There are occasions when I make a mistake, we all do, and I need to open that file again to modify changes. Thank heavens for VobBlanker:)
I saw on one of alkohols guides about converting to ISO, and I assumed that was what he preferred. That is what I get for making assumptions! What do they say, it makes an !&@ out of you and me!
By the way alkohol, I point people to your guides all of the time! I really need to take the time to set up my blogs.

@syxguns buddy
Thanks for the compliment buddy in regards to my blog and guides. As you know, I try to make it simple and easy for newbies (especially FREE tools).
Back to the subject now. If all you do (the very last step) is create an ISO (disc image) and burn with ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter, then you're safe, so don't worry about it. I should have pointed more detailed when I posted earlier, meaning I highly recommend ripping as VIDEO_TS (VOB, BUP and IFO) instead of ripping as ISO. Yes, we both know that ripping the movie via DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter as "File Mode" (aka File F) or "VIDEO_TS" via DVDFab Decrypter is preferred. That being said, we have more control over our ripped files (VOB, BUP and IFO), therefore we can "edit, strip out, blank or delete" any unwanted junks.
It's time for you to make some guides and put them on your blog, LOL!! See ya around buddy, merry christmas and happy new year.

The way I think about it is simple. Use the format that is best suited for a job, or you feel comfortable with (that works). If you know you're going to have to go into the files, or even if there is a possibilty, it don't make sense to lock the files up in an ISO (disc image). If you're using Shrink to edit, it doesn't matter, the app handles both Files and ISO Image the same. It just depends on the need and the software. Also, like I posted, once the editing is done and the transcoding or encoding is finished it don't matter what format you burn in. There it goes to user intent and available software. I don't think there's anything alkohol and I actually disagree on. He can correct me if I'm wrong, but it appeared his emphasis was on leaving the files in Video_TS for easy access for whatever work needs to be done to them. I'm in complete agreement with that. It makes life easier. I'm just saying if you need an ISO or need to burn one, it doesn't hurt to have the know how.
