Please note, I picked up most of this from a post at XS, but it worked great for me. Note some SIL chipsets seem to be problematic for some with this drive. Before getting started you'll need to download the file http://dwl.xbox-scene.com/xbox360pc/dvd/360fwtoolbox_30.rar from the usual places. With all that said here are the steps:
Use Slax 2.0. This updated version by Probutus includes support for a much greater range of chipsets, including the VIA cards. Ironically some SIL cards don't seem to not work so well now. It also supports SATA > USB adaptors. If you are using onboard SATA, make sure RAID is disabled in your BIOS. Slax 2.0 works much better than Slax 1, and it's faster! Download the Slax 2.0 image file and burn it with whatever CD burning program you like. With both the Xbox 360 and PC powered off, hook up both power and video cables to the Xbox 360, and ensure a ground between the Xbox 360 and your PC. Hook up the Hitachi drive via a SATA cable. Boot up your PC from the Slax CD. As soon as you see the Slax cloverleaf, power on your Xbox 360. (hurry, it doesn't stay there long) Let Slax go. If you get "Spinning Up Disc.." then eject the Hitachi drive and it will continue. When you reach the login screen for Slax do the following.
To verify that your drive is in ModeB, one of the following must be happening:
1. The drive takes two presses of the eject button to open/close.
2. When closing the drive using the eject button, the drive tray will auto-eject back open a few seconds later. 3 hits of the eject button while the drive is open should keep it closed.
Once you have verified the drive is in ModeB, restart your PC, eject the Slax disc, and let it boot. When it gets to the Windows loading bar, eject the Hitachi drive open and closed a few times so that Windows will recognize the drive. When you first get Windows loaded, check device manager (CD/DVD Drives) before anything else. If you see your drive in there, good.
1. Open 360 Firmware Toolbox v3.0
2. Tools > Direct Drive Dump (GDR Only)
3. Choose your DVD drive from the drop-down list (there should only be one)
4. Click the button labeled "RAW Dump Firmware As ..." You have to insert a retail Xbox 360 game or DVD movie in the drive and wait 10-20 seconds then dump or it wont work. To keep the drive closed with the disc in it, hit eject 3 times quickly while the drive is open.
5. Save the original firmware as original.bin somewhere safe
6. It will tell you that the firmware has been dumped and ask if you want to open it, select "Yes"
7. Make sure everything looks pretty normal, nothing out of the ordinary
8. Go to Tools > Smart Hack Patcher
9. Read the warning and then accept it
10. On the line labelled "output file" click the box to the right with the ellipsis (three dots) and save your output file as hacked.bin
11. Make sure the rule set is for Hitachi v78 drives
12. Hit "Generate File"
13. Again, it will ask if you want to open the firmware, select "Yes"
14. Go to Tools > Direct Drive Flash (GDR Only)
15. Select Differential Flash (PATCH)
16. Select your Hitachi DVD drive from the drop-down list
17. Hit "Read Drive and Detect Differences"
18. Select "Start Flashing" and wait for it to finish (very fast)
19. Test it all out
20. Donate to Maximus if it worked
Don't forget to plug that small black sata cable back in so your Hitachi drive is actually connected to the Xbox 360 motherboard! Also, make sure you power-cycle the system twice after flashing. This is just to make you get it out of mode b before trying to use it. Lastly, is have fun!

Nice tutorial Memnock. This should be stickied IMO, Memnock has put some time into it obviously, and it will cut down on the thousands of 'how do I flash a 78 drive' threads that will undoubtely appear in January and February as people who got 360's at Christmas try and flash them

Thanks. I'm just passing along the info I picked up from somewhere else. I hope this could help a few people on and save on a lot of the same questions being asked on the 0078fk.

Also Memnock at this step
4. Click the button labeled "RAW Dump Firmware As ..."
You must put a disk in the drive and wait 10-20 seconds then dump or it wont work. as people will soon be asking.
One more thing when you close the drive it will take 2 presses and it will eject after about 3-5 seconds because it's in mode b.To get past that you must press eject twice to close then once more as it is going in and it will stay shut.

Edited with the insert disc part. I can't believe I left that part out. Maybe it was in the NFO or something and that's why I didn't think about it. Also for the drive to stay closed I needed to hit eject quickly 3 times while it was opened.

Quote: 3. Choose your DVD drive from the drop-down list (there should only be one)
3.5 Insert original game disk into open tray..Press Eject twice to insert disk, then a third time as the tray goes in to keep disk inserted (or else the disk will auto-eject). Wait 20 seconds.
4. Click the button labeled "RAW Dump Firmware As ..."
these step should be added in this order
the question i have do you eject the disc after 20 secs as you cant usually flash a drive with the disc in :)

Memnock,
Thanks for the awesome walkthrough. Alot of people leave out alot of information when giving you these instructions. Thanks for being complete.
I followed your instructions step by step. However I am having a few problems. I successfully flashed the 360 Firmware Toolbox v3.0 after getting it into modeb with slax 2.0.
Everything appeared to work fine. However now that I am playing some backed up games I am expeierncing problems with games locking up and sometimes not booting at all. The backed up games I am playing am Medal Of Honor 3 and Gears Of War. I played Gears of war for an hour then it locked up and said the disc was unrecognizable. I boot it a few more times and it loads it again fine.
How do I determine if this is a flashing problem or not? Want to ensure I did not screw something up. Any suggestions??

Glad it worked for you. I tried the follow the steps as I saw them on there and added what I thought was needed to to make it complete for everyone. Your issues sound like the media you are using. Try using one Verbatim. If it works fine you'll know it's the media.

okay everything worked! i flashed my friend's LG.
the only thing is LG drives dont like discs that arent good quality
is used pilips and it dosent want to play the disc, however the my 360 has a samsung drive and it can play it in fast mode, but not in silent/slow mode... a bit strange isnt is? the release said that the slow mode is for weak quality discs. oh and the a Philips is RITEK D01. i hope they will make this firmware make the drive read better... I know I know use Verbatim :)
and sorry for the litte bit off topic
and for "mkmarus"
i have heard from many people the the problem is because the heat, thats why the dvd gets the error, the drive gets too hot and it cant read properly. Anyway try Verbatim media maybe Memnock is right.
i still think its a heat issue.
Thank You Backup and thank you Menock for your help!

anyone hear of problems with Fujifilm DVD+R DL? That is the media I will use. I bought these burnt discs in china town in Toronto. One thing I noticed is that the drive seems like it is working really hard. Makes lots of loading noise while playing. It funny because I can reboot the machine 3 or 4 times and it will say unrecognized media or it loads perfectly. I played gears of war for hours last night before it died. Medal Of Honor died when I get on the truck everytime. Any suggestions?

Try one and see. I hate to sound like a broken record, but Verbatim seems to be the only who have DL DVD+R down perfectly. Some of the Hitachis can be a bit picky and that's where people run into problems.
