I am seeking someone with a PS3 that is fairly versatile with technical aspects.

I have a 61" Sony Projection TV that is 420p and 1080i capable HD connected via Component cables (y-pb-pr). I get the wonderful fun of downscaling to 420p. This is not my issue, my issue is that while playing games (despite the resolution) I get an obvious "refresh bar" scrolling up the screen every 30s or so. It's not so hideous that it makes the game unplayable but as it tracks over the image, you can see a slight green-ish discoloration as it scrolls by.

I had recently hooked up my friend's X360 (also via component cables) and do not recall seeing it at all. However, now w/ the ps3, in 1080i mode @ the xmb, I see it. Playing resistance demo @ 420p, I see it. Playing GTHD, I see it which is at 1080i.

For those that might not understand what I mean by 'refresh bar', it's that horizontal dark bar that scrolls up a computer monitor normally invisible to the naked eye but if you were to video tape a computer monitor you would see it. (try to recall videos or newsbroadcasts where they show a CRT monitor in the background, u'd see that refresh bar.

I've checked my connections, all seem to be good. The cables I bought have a satisfaction guaranteed warranty supposedly so if they are faulty I can replace them. If anyone could offer help or seen this problem on their HD projection TVs as well, please help me out because seeing it is really annoying me.

Thanks.

p.s. I've tried unplugging everything BUT my ps3, and I still get the issue. I then recalled when I used the x360, I had the wireless unit unplugged. I am considering the fact that it may be Wi-fi distortion ont he screen but that usually makes a screen spazz out. I'm getting a constant rolling refresh look. Happens least on the XMB/Photos and most in games/dvds. Especially noticeable when the screen is displaying oranges/browns...that's when you see the green-distortion the most.

Does your TV has DVI input? If so, try HDMI (from PS3) to DVI (your TV) and see if that'll handle/solve the issue. Hope someone with a similar issue will sort you in due time.

NOTE: Don't quote me on that simply because I haven't tested or played any PS3 via my TV set. I know my 55" SONY HDTV supported 1080i, 720p and 480p (it's loaded with DRC, Hi-Scan and DVI input), but since I haven't got any PS3 due to it's sold-out, I can't tell you what's going on.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

nope my TV's a bit older so all it has is 1 set of component inputs on Video 5 for HDTV...one of the first generations of HDTV.

-I just tried moving the ps3 further from the TV to see if it was interference and that didn't work.
-I tried turning off the wifi to see if it was wireless interference, that didn't work either.
-I tried plugging in my PS2 w/ the same ps3 component cables and the ps2 received no interference. Those distortions weren't appearing at all. I even put the image to 480i to see if the ps3 would look like the ps2 did (distortion-less) but it still appeared.

The really strange part is that it seems to be the absolute worst at 480p. Resistance gets pretty bad distortions. Call of Duty 3 gets moderate ones. While playing NBA 07's demo at 1080i, during gameplay I don't see it AT ALL however on the menu screen, I see a very very very very minor trace of it...as minor as on the XMB. Playing GTHD also at 1080i it's a bit less visible than in CoD3/Resistance but more visible than in NBA.

I really don't understand this. Seeing that NBA is almost distortion free and Resistance is distortion-ridden what could it be? I'd say it's 480p in general but that doesn't explain why 1080i in GTHD also has it.

I'm tempted to move the system to a SDTV and see if the same problem appears.

Just a quick try. Sir Raven did you change the connection type in the settings of the XMB to y-pb-pr ? If you selected the wrong type in the Settings of the PS3 this sometimes occurs. Try setting them to the cables you are using. You might also try to get some $20 Psyclone component cables as these cables kick ass in that they look exactly the same as Monster cables in both quality and appearance.I prefer Psyclone because of the price and the quality.

thanks for the replies guys but I solved the problem. After searching through forums left and right I finally found other people with the same problem buried deep in the net.

Turns out, the distortion-bars were a result of electrical interference only as a result of vulnerability within AV and Component cables. HDMI does not get this problem. The whole issue was because a ground loop due to surrounding equipment. It was quickly resolved by ungrounding (keeping third prong unplugged) the power plug.

After that, no more distortion bars or audio hums...everything was perfect.

Basically, all I did was take an old extension cable. Those that are like rubber and have only have 2 slits for regular 2-prong cables. I then cut off as much of the extension's tip as I could to reach the 2 slits. Then I just plugged in the power cable leaving the grounding prong unplugged.

"GTHD" isn't exactly coming out. The project was scrapped in order to simply make GT5 for an early 2008 release (last i checked). On christmas eve, Sony placed a demo of GTHD on the playstation network for download. The graphics are amazing despite having been built on the ps2 GT4 engine.

I have that same issue with my Wii! Did u "unground" an entire powerbar or did u only do that trick to the tv plug only? Cuz man, the hum bars not unbearable... but they're just annoying as hell!

At first, all I did was take an old extension cable and plug my ps3's power cable into it leaving the 3rd prong exposed. Afterwards, I began to get intermitten static on my TV which seemed to get better/worse depending on the positioning of my power bar.

That made me decide to toss my old one and go get a new one, particularly with coax cable protection. After getting the new power bar, I have not experienced the hum bars despite having everything plugged in (including my PS3 grounded like it should be). So after all my experimentations, it appears that the ground loop occurs with un-protected coax cables. After running them through a surge protector, you should be fine.

I've only played a friend's Wii a few times, so I don't remember if it was a 3 prong power plug or 2 prong. If it is a 2 prong plug, it can't be fixed by ungrounding like the ps3.

Yea, I think I'm gonna pick up a descent surge protector rather than using my $5 power bar... Cuz the Wii is acutally a 2 prong plug, so what I did was acutally used a 3-to-2 adaptor for my TV to unground it. And it did help. But it basically changed the pattern of those dark lines to thinner but rolls faster now. Since the interference is still there, I'm going to try the next step up in price with a better surge protector... I just hope I don't need to end up moving up to one of those Monster Cable PowerCenters :(

On a side note, the ps3 is working fine on hdmi for me. But tons of people had your problem on playstation.com's forum. And they all got solved through ungrounding their ps3s as well;)

PS: Thanks for the advice!

no problem, if it helps any, the surge protector i got was called "cyberpower" i think. It has 8 outlets, coax and phone as well.

Hopefully all goes well and you get rid of the problem. Seeing those distortions gets so annoying especially when you start playing with all your plugs and nothing's fixing it.

I have the same issue with the scanning bars and annoying humming sound coming from my TV when the PS3 is on; but it only occurs when another system using component is on at the same time. I do have an old power strip that I will replace with a better one and we will see what happens. Thanks for the help!
