@Alkohol, i am kinda new as a memeber to this site and how it works but not new to buruning DVDS and useing differnt software to do it. Currently i use either AnyDVD or DVDFab Decryter in combination with VobBlanker and either Shrink or Nero Recode and everything works great. My question to you is what kinda hardware do you have to get times like 17mins for Decrytion on a movie like Pirates of the Carribian?

Hardware (specs)? Hmmm... I don't have the best system, mine is kinda old (3 plus years), but I guess she's still crank good afterall. I can rip/decrypt any DVD/movies within 14 - 18 minutes flawlessly via either my TOSHIBA or DRU-710A drive. Below are my specs, since you asked for it.

** Intel P4, 2.66GHz, 1GB RAM
** TOSHIBA SD-M1802 (unlimited ripping/read firmware)
** SONY DRU-710A (BYX5)
** LITE-ON SHW-160P6S

@BMF1

Out of curiosity, why did you asked? So are you saying your times are way longer? If it's more than 20 minutes, then it is likely you're having DMA issue (i.e. your driver(s) has gone from DMA to PIO or Not Available).

Here is just another example of my ripping times with DVDFab Decrypter (taken from FEARLESS, US, Region 1).

@Alkohol...I see DVDFab Decrypter allows you to convert DVD file to your IPOD or PSP. I just got a ZUNE and recently added "FEARLESS" & "RUNNING SCARED" to my ZUNE. Using a Cucusoft program. Yeah, back on topic I see a major differnece back up processing speed between my two PC's one being an older P4 1.7 GHz 256 ram and my newer P4 3.2 w/HT 1 GIG RAM and all of my optical drives both internal external are SONY and perform flawlessly. I would always recommend a fast processor P4 or the newer DUO-CORE's.:P

well i would say that my spec all match yours but i use an NEC ND-3520A and my processer is 3.0 and i have checked my drives for DMA and they both are running it and i even went as far a flashing them and i still have Decryption times of over 25mins on average could there be some other problem that i could have over looked?

Hmmm... I don't have (or used) any NEC drives, but I've heard that NECs are tricky some times. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think some of NECs has a riplocked (or something similar).

Your processor is way faster than mine (yours = 3.0GHz, mine = 2.66GHz), but ripping over 25 mins is quite odd to me. Definitely sounds like DMA issue to me. To be honest with you, I've never gone beyond 20 minutes whenever I ripped any DVD/movies (new released or older movies). Like I said; most of my ripping times are 12 - 18 minutes (or 19 minutes at the longest).

Yep that drive is like 3 years old, but she's still rips like brand new flawlessly -- that's my main DVD-ROM drive (TOSHIBA SD-M1802). About the firmware, it's a firmware by The Dangerous Brother via http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

However, with my SONY DRU-710A (a rebadged SOHW-1633S), she can rip/decrypt as fast or even faster sometimes (depends on the length of the movie). Either I'll have my TOSHIBA or SONY to do the ripping process and I'll have my LITE-ON SHW-160P6S to do the burning process.

Best of luck!!

@N2DVD

I've heard of Cucusoft, but I've never used it simply because I have Nero Recode already. And with Recode I can simply recode and convert any of my favorite DVD into my 60GB IPOD via Nero Recode (Recode Main Movie to Nero Digital). Yes, I can even "edit/trim" from "start and end frames" to make the movie as small as 679MB (depends on size of the movie) smoothly.

alkohol's right on the NEC's having riplock.
This is probably what's slowing down your ripping.

Never had an NEC either but Liggy & Dees does have patched firmware to remove it. Here's a link.

Here comes binkie to the rescue, I knew I can always count on you binkie. Happy New Year buddy!!

@BMF1

I think your best chance is to go with the modified firmware that binkie has provided above. Meaning if you want to surpass your slow ripping times and that is if you don't have any DMA issue. Or you can simply get another drive (Litey). They're pretty cheap, but good (around $35 - $50) and loaded with awesome burning performance, plus all newer Lite-On can booktype into DVD-ROM flawlessly. However, the choice is yours.

Keep us posted.

ok i am still lost cause there are soo many choices and i have no idea which is the right one (i assume that you want me to use the side bar and select NEC 3520 and from that choose one of the Modified downloads)and there are sub catagorys with in that partition like Mad Dog and I-O DATA?

You're welcome alkohol :)

@BMF1
Yep pick the 3520 on the left side - the latest patched firmware for this drive is the 3F3.
Unless when you bought this drive it was branded as a Mad Dog or IO Data drive (NEC is the oem) then you would use the one's for which brand name it is.

Picking up another drive like alkohol suggested is a good idea too. Use the LiteOn's myself and they are fast rippers. With your spec's on a clean pc I would say 10 mins aver.
If you're in the US - check out newegg.com

The riplock removal will definitely increase the rip speed - by how much can't say but just a guess and I would think it would double the speed.

Happy New Year all!

You're welcome and Happy New Year. Keep us posted. By the way, here's an article I found at CDFREAKS that you might like to know in addendum to "liggy's modified firmware vs stock" http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/NEC-ND-3...k-firmware.html

ok i have been away from my pc a little too long and don't quite know how to install this BIN file and i know that if i do it wrong i could mess some stuff up pretty bad so if anyone could throw me a link with some easy instructions on how to install it and install this firmware for my ROM. Also i have another computer and its running a Samsung TS-H552U and it seems to have the same problem with about 23min per Decryption which i am concerned about cause the CPU on that Comp is 3.4 so it should be faster, shouldn't it?

Your new firmware for the Samsung TS-H552U is US07, here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2011

I don't know about you or others, but I've always updated all of my firmware when there's a newer version out. I've updated so many times in the past and I don't have any issue at all. However, the choice is yours.

Keep in mind though, firmware will help your drive to burn better and it increase media compatibility (meaning you can burn the latest media without any issue).

Just to add to alkohol's post (yep I too keep my firmware up to date and all drives & no problems)

Here's a link from alkohol's link above on install.
I'll see if I can get locoeng who loves NEC's and uses Liggy & Dees firmware on them.

Yes the other pc should be faster. Check your DMA mode - what does the current transfer mode show - Ultra DMA 2 or Ultra DMA 4? Both drives (nec & samsung) I would think support Ultra DMA mode 4.

Another factor can be pc maintenance - keeping up on it - like disc cleanup, defrag, registry cleaner & virus and spyware scans?

Ok first let me thank you guys once again. As far as the 3.4/Samsung TS-H552U i did that firmware update and i always make sure i am running DMA so that isn't a concern of mine and now it is getting around 13 1/2min and to me that is a good improvment but i would like to know what you guys think?
and as far as my 3.0/NEC ND-3520A the problem i have is the flash utility, i don't have one to use it

@BMF1
Just from reading the how to on the link - looks like you just run the exe but you can wait if you like for someone else to help you that.
I'd hate to tell you the wrong thing for the NEC.

The different DMA modes could play a part in it - if the drives are connected by a 40 pin ide cable that fastest transfer mode is Ultra DMA 2. Ultra DMA 2 has a transfer rate of 33.3 mb/s while Ultra DMA 4 is 66.7 mb/s - so can make a few minutes diff.

You should be able to get your rip time down - getting the riplock off the NEC should help.

I don't always rip to my hard drive 1st but I think it takes maybe 10 mins give or take when I do.
Using like Recode doing a full back w/ around 25% compression burning at 8x takes me about 22 mins. 2.8 ghz w/ 1 gig ram.

@Nero63
lol - yes I remember them - my 2 old favs :)
For those specs that is quite good!

Got it from the link above:
Q: How do i flash my drive with this firmware?

* A: The firmware is now bundled with Liggys Binflash. Unzip then run the package, now click on the FLASH button. The firmware will now be uploaded onto your drive, when completed you will be prompted to restart your PC.

Here's another link from Liggy's & Dees on how to flash the NEC.

edit to add: @Nero63 - Def. helps. I keep all mine as clean as I can - my daughter's pc can be a challenge :)
