Hey Gang...

Few questions for members here who are more experienced than I am..which is probably everyone!

1) What format does DVD Shrink burn in? AVI? MPEG?

2) Why can't Shrink just do a disc to disc copy? It doesn't make sense that a movie has to be shrunk to burn. If all DVDs hold the same amount of info, then the store bought DVD should just copy right to a blank, right?

3) Has anyone ever heard of/used Acala DVD ripper? It rips in AVI, VDC & SVCD format. Are those formats any good?

Thanks!

shrink use standard dvd format. i would say with no copyproctetion shrink can copy . if a dvdis larger than 4.7 then it needs to be shrunk to fit (DVD5). all dvd are not equal in amount of material they hold. dvd 5 holds 4.37 dvd 9 holds 7.95
i dont know if shrink can convert to other formats.

what are you doing?
shrink is a great free program. along with a few others

NOMAAM,
1. MPEG-2 DVD Compliant files
2. It can do a disk to disk copy. As born2ride stated it all depends on the blank media you use. The commerical DVD's are usually 7 -8+GB. Even the movie by itself is usually more than 4.37GB and this is why is needs to be compressed to fit on the DVD-5 blank media you are using

3. Never heard of that ripper. Looked it up and can not figure out why you want to rip the movie back to VCD compliant files but to each their on. It is your $$

Hey thanks for your help. I didn't know that commercial DVDs had greater capacity than blanks. Learn something new every day, right?

Born2ride...Not working on anything now, but just wanted to know all of this for future reference

CarMike...My understanding is that SVCD is MPEG2 quality. Acala DVD ripper claims that it makes perfect back up copies (using SVCD), as opposed to Shrink which shrinks the movie, which lessens quality. So if I use Acala DVD ripper to back up my movies, instead of Shrink, I would have better quality, because there's no shrinking involved, right?

Why SVCD? You're going to lose a lot of quality backing up into SVCD. I've never heard of "Acala DVD ripper"? As far as quality and transcoders goes, nothing else beat Nero Recode (my 1st choice) and DVD Shrink (my 2nd choice). Both Recode and DVD Shrink created by the same guy and they will beat any transcoders out there flawlessly.

NOMAAM ,
SVCD is above VCD in quality and below DVD in quality. You can try it but for $35.00 if they offer a trial version use that first to compare but I really will pass on it as the quality is below what I need.

@ nomaam & whoeverelse has forgotten:

DVDShrink, as it's works imply, is not a burning program, it is simply a program that performs the remarcable task of converting large dvd compliant files into smaller ones. With this in mind, what burning program are you using nomaam?

ALkohol...I'm using Shrink to rip & Nero 5 or 6 (don't remember which) to burn. Should I switch over to Nero Recode for the whole thing? I read about Recode and it said that it only does non-copy protected DVDs.

i just started using recode. it does not do copyp dvds. it will however do them if you import them from your hd first. so far i like recode. but it costs $. shrink and Nero you have is free.
'
newer movies shrink can't handle alone.
its all a matter of preferance

@NOMAMM

Yes, it true Nero Recode can not transcode on-the-fly, but you shouldn't need to worry. All you need is either DVDFab Decrypter (FREE) or RipIt4Me (FREE) to rip and have Nero Recode to transcode and the rest is history with your favorite burning engine.

To make a long story short, here are 2 free and simple methods.

* DVDFab Decrypter - to rip
* Nero Recode or DVD Shrink (your choice) - to transcode/shrink
* Nero or ImgBurn (your choice) - to burn your final VIDEO_TS folder (BUP, IFO, VOB files)

Another flawless method

* RipIt4Me - to rip, actually DVD Decrypter + FixVTS
* Nero Recode or DVD Shrink (your choice) - to transcode/shrink
* ImgBurn or Nero - to burn your final VIDEO_TS folder (BUP, IFO, VOB files)

NOTE: As for using DVDFab Decrypter route, simply skip VobBlanker or FixVTS, "unless DVD Shrink has encountered an error" or unless you want to edit/blank/delete unwanted junks only.
