no dude, I am across the ditch in NZ,I got my PS3 60gb from out of Hong Kong, its a NTSC/J also but its a 220/240 volt right of the box, think you gotta buy a step down convertor for your unit in Oz

went on the Hong Kong PS3 site and this is a message in the FAQ section

Can PLAYSTATION®3 sold in Hong Kong play PAL content?A:PLAYSTATION®3 sold in Hong Kong can play only NTSC (60i)
content at this moment. This means 50i AVCHD content
(recorded by video camera) and PAL DVD (SD) cannot be played.
These contents are now planned to become playable through
system update, which is planned to be released on 2007 spring

so maybe these things are going to even better,I have a NTSC unit and live in a PAL region so good info for all me thinks

I've got a Japanese PS3 and it's compatible with anything from 110v - 240v. I think Japan runs on 110v and here in the UK we run at 220v. My PS3 runs fine here without a stepdown converter.

Inspiron 5150 notebook, P4 3.06ghz w/HT, 512mb RAM,64mb GeForce 5200, 4x DVD+R/+RW combo drive.

great, just noticed some being sold in Oz and NZ from Japan ,that needed to have a convertor (in the advertisement) but hey thought the info on the Hong Kong Sony site was great , so even in the UK with PAL only coming in March, looks like buying a NTSC wont mater if there is a software up grade that allows you to play PAL on your NTSC..Sony games will truly be region free for PS3

Hi guys, I've just got a ps3 - it's a jap version.
I plugged it into the mains (here in the UK it's 240v) and pushed the on button. It worked and there's no problems till now.

I tried using some dvd's n stuff - the only one that works so far is a region 1 - NTSC dvd.

Does anyone know exactly what dvd's and Blu-ray disc will work?
Do you guys think blu-rays bought from www.playusa.com will work ok?

cheers

yea mine is NTSC, havent played any blu rays movies yet (dont have any) I have DVD dycrptor and have played regoar movies with no probs, mostly
I think its the Blu Ray movies (not the games) that are the main probelm when it comes to region code,if yours is a NSTC should play US movies ok ut if NSTC/J think could be a prob...maybe

no mate, the firmware upgrade article I found in HK is really about letting folks like us with NTSC units living in PAL regions the ability to purchase/use local games (PAL) .The region code thing is all about Hollywood flexing it power on DVD manufactures , especially new tech like Blu-ray so they can keep more money in there greedy pockets..but ofcourse Blu ray games for PS3 are region free just the NTSC/PAl thing that restricts PS3 (at the moment anyway)
