I recently recieved an error "illegal disc" when I tried to copy video files to a dvd -r disc. The error happens when it try's to start burning.
Before this, i bought a different, less expensive type of dvd disc's. But I don't think that it is the problem because I have since bought a better quality type of disc, Maxell -r and it still didn't work.
I tried using Nero and it worked fine using the same video files. Then I tried an RW disc and IT worked fine. I have noticed other users geting this error and they posted an error log but I don't have a copy of mine. I could get it if I needed to.
I haven't changed any settings on Shrink so I am at a bit of a loss here. If some could help me that would be fantastic!!

Thanks so much for your reply/help. I will try firmware update. If this doesn't help, I will post again and post the Nero log.
Thanks again

Knowing almost nothing about this field of computers, explain to me how a dvd burner in need of an update in its firmware stop DVD Shrink from working? how does that work?

Firmware: Is the programming for drives. This programming consists of how drives are to burn specific media. All blank media has MID codes. The firmware reads these codes, and then it knows how to properly burn them. It's the writing strategy. The firmware instructs the drive on how fast to burn it,increments of burning, and to properly burn them.
When switching media, that MID code will likely change, even among batches of same exact brand name and quantity..
Firmware updates:
With the newer/faster media that comes out, manufacturers of burners will have their drives tested on the various MID codes. They gather all this info, develop a firmware version to handle them, then issue an update..There's instances where media quality is so crappy, they won't allow that burner to burn that specific media. They can also allow you to overburn media, and there's hacked firmware to make drives region free or booktyping capability.
Firmware updates are up to the manufacturers. Some will have frequent updates, while other manufacturers won't. By having fewer updates, this is a way some brand named drives of telling you it's time to update to a newer burner.
If you insert a specific media and get a no disc,or ejects during the lead-in phase, definite firmware update is needed. It also can affect stand alone playability.
Dvd shrink does not burn. It only rips and compresses. It can use other programs to do the burning: Nero,ImgBurn,DVD Decrypter, and CopyToDVD. If you have shrink set up to autoburn with any of those programs, you don't even realize you're using a burn program.

I really appreciate your thorough explaination of how it works. Truly, I knew about a third of what you just said, the rest ..just learned.
So, 6 coasters later, no success. i have since tried something called flashing my dvd drive. i used the appropriate material, I believe so anyways. Someone suggested something called Epprom Utility 3.5.0. Is this really needed?
I am sorry but I didn't get a copy of the error log but I do know that I have a LiteOn dvdrw shw-1635s firmware version ygs3. I couldn't find a firmware update on the LiteOn website. i found 3 similar but after a downloaded them, they told me that they didn't match my drive.
I currently use dvdfab express. It has always worked well for me. I downloaded it about 4 months ago. The video files needed decrypting. Well, I should say that when I first started Shrink, some error would pop up so then I'd know to try running it through a decrypter, right? The decrypted file then runs through Shrink fine, BUT won't burn.
Like I said, I have tried one Maxell DVD-R disc and about seven C2 Tech DVD-R disc's (thats the name) I know, cheaper. BUT NEITHER worked !!! The burn speed was always 4x or slower. I still recieved the illegal disc error.
ANY SUGGESTIONS!! Is it firmware issue? Please help

Quote: LiteOn dvdrw shw-1635s firmware version ygs3
This is old, you need version YS0Z.
Get the firmware update (YS0Z) here for LiteOn dvdrw shw-1635s:
http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html#SOHW-1693S
Try the stock or the patched version for better performance. The file/s are in a .rar format so you'll need a utility to get at the contents, I recommend 7zip (free) if you don't have one already.
7zip.exe http://www.7-zip.org/
Quote: Someone suggested something called Epprom Utility 3.5.0. Is this really needed?
No.
DVDFab decrypter/DVDshrink/and Nero is all you should need to get the backup.
DVDFab latest beta
http://www.dvdfab.com/DVDFabDecrypter3060Beta.exe
Rip using DVDFab, open the files using shrink and auto burn to disk using Nero.

OK. I updated the Firmware of my dvd burner to YSOZ and it still gives me the illegal disc error. It happens always at the point of burning. I even tried make a copy of something I already had on disc and it didn't burn. I am thinking that its the type of disc I am using. But here is a copy of the error log, just in case.

Quote: seven C2 Tech DVD-R disc's
Is that Nero log from those C2 Tech blanks? I never heard of them.
TyG02 are some very good discs,if they are genuine. That MID code has been faked with generic brand name media. To find out if they are genuine, get a bright light at look at the bottom of the discs. Near the center hub, look at the purple for a code which should look like:
GH000073 or similar. 2 letters in large caps and 6 numbers following.
The MID code can be faked, but not that batch number. If they are from those C2 techs, beware of them. Post back that batch number-but it probably won't have one.
Quote: DO most burners prefer a certain type of media?
Some do prefer certain media and even certain formats. Lite-on drives are booktyping drives. These booktyping drives turn the plus format into the dvd-rom format-giving them a higher compatability rate. It's far superior to the dash format. The dash format is superior to the non booktyped + format. Burners should play their own backups. But reading backups from other burners and other stand alone players-the dreaded no disc error pops up when they don't recognize backups.
I use Benq drives, which highly favor the plus format, booktyping reasons. The dash does give them more issues-higher coaster percentage and a 75% stand alone compatability rate.
Now a no disc error from a burner from a blank disc:Could be bad media-faked or bad batch from the manufacturer,or a firmware issue-in which the burner's manufacturer doesn't recommend using a certain media,so the firmware will not allow burning that specific media.Or the drive is bad,if you get that no disc error with all types of blank media.
Quote: bought a better quality type of disc, Maxell -r and it still didn't work.
I see a lot of people having trouble with -8x maxell Ritek-G05 media, whereas the +8x maxell Ritek-R03 are very good. Those same exact Maxell 8x are made by 3 different manufacturers for each format. Ritek,Hitachi, and CMC Mag. Someone may have gotten great backups with maxell hitachis, meanwhile their next batch may be ritek,or even worse-cmags. This is normal with most brands of media: HP,Sony,Philips,TDK,memorex, fuji, etc. That's what gives brand name media a bad rap because quality will vary when switching spindles.
That's why genuine Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim are top dogs among media. Both have high quality control standards, the dye is Advanced Metal AZO, and will eliminate a slew of issues- Playback, less coasters, and Longevity. If you can find the Maxell Hitachi's-which the shrink wrapper will say Made in Japan, those are also sweet.
BTW talkhard. Go to your post with the burn log and click on the pencil/notepad icon in the orange-on the top right corner. Then edit out your serial # from Nero. It can be stolen and it looks like:
1A20-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx
The rest of the log looked ok. DMA's enabled, not burning too much data,no remnants of an older version of Nero.

I would really like to thank all of you guys John and saugmon for all your help. i will go and buy some new blank dvds. i am very thankful that you guys know how to read those error logs and know so much about dvds and burning. I, on the other hand, have a bit to learn. I feel a lesson learned.
The error log IS from the C2 Tech dvds and I will be certain to post the info I get. Thanks for the heads up on the Nero serial number. Thanks again guys and I will check back soon.
Eternally grateful

Hey guys. Saugmon wanted me to post the batch number of those C2 Tech dvds. I have a number here in the purple part of the hub of the disc and it reads ..DVD-R 8x 267, thats it. There is also a second code on the clear part of the disc that reads..IFPI EJO3. Thats all I got. I have a website printed on the bottom, front of the disc's ccandu.com

I am having this exact same problem! I have done everything... I'm at a loss. It was burning Office Depot DVD-Rs just fine, I ran out. I went out the next day and bought some Maxell DVD-Rs. They won't burn. I'm getting the same message. Error- Illegal Disc. The drive burns CDs just fine, but I've tried everything. We're independent filmmakers, so I tried just burning off footage, still won't work. I have been burning for as long as one could burn anything and I've never seen this. Please, any help would be great!!!!

I know through my experience that Maxell's didn't work well with my dvd burner either. I have a few coasters as a result of bad media type. Maybe try another brand?

ARose13: Update the firmware for your burner.
What's the brand name, model#,and current firmware version?
What's the speed rate of those Office Depot and Maxells? Locate the MID codes.
Maxell has had up to 4 different manufacturers for their media, therefore 4 different MID codes for the exact same speed rated media.
Office depot uses a lot of Ritek media, and a little bit of ricohjpn. Not too shabby. Maxell uses Hitachi,Ritek, and cmags-huge quality difference between those 3.
Try to pick up some verbatim. Easy to find, and when on sale-under $15 per 50 pk at Bestbuy,Office depot,Office Max,etc.
