I bought a MAxtor 3200 External HDD and am trying to get it to work with my PS3.. I've tried formatting to FAT32,tried adding folders, tried raw...No luck.. I see where some are saying that they have no trouble... What am I doing wrong? I ve looked all over this forum and google but cant find details on anything...
did you mean to get the external HDD to work with the ps3 or yellow dog linux? i kinda need help also since i just got my 500GB external WD HDD. when i got to yellow dog linux with the HDD connected, do i have to format it? if so, how? because i formatted from my computer already in NTFS. what commmand do you use to rip the game directly to the external HDD with yellow dog?
I am using it through the PS3, I havent tried it on Yellow Dog yet.. I am at the moment formatting it to NTFS, I tried 2 partions on the drive, both FAT32,but I had to reset the PS3 to find it....Ill try Yellow Dog and see what I get.. But if I am not mistaken, you asking about how to dump a game onto the drive from Yellow Dog.. If so I havent tried it either yet..Really though until theres and exploit, it wont do any good due to protection software and PS3 reconizing the ISO.
Oh the other tip, if you cant format but only up to half the HDD size to FAT32, then create 2 FAT32 Partions, I did and I got full HDD space.
if you want to use ur external HDD for yellow dog, i just learned that you have to mount it first. heres the tut on how to do it.
a) Make SURE that your USB hard drive is an EXT3 formatted drive- if you aren't sure, try Google for additional assistance with EXT3 formatting.
b) If it is an EXT3 formatted USB hard drive, type fdisk -l and press ENTER at the Terminal prompt to determine what disk it is (99% of the time it will be /dev/sdc1). Once you find out, in the Terminal type mkdir /mnt/exthdd and then press ENTER.
c) Now comes the tricky part, in the Terminal prompt type mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/exthdd where sdc1 is the disk determined in Step b) above... followed by this command to begin dumping your PS3 iSO image to it: dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/mnt/exthdd/ps3disc.iso and press ENTER.
So after you pressed ENTER, the cursor moved to the next line but you're probably asking yourself "Is it dumping?" and "How do I know when it's done?" so to answer these questions here is what you can do: Minimize the Termainal window (DON'T close it) and from the Desktop navigate to the following: Using your USB Mouse, double-(left)click on the root's Home icon and you will see THIS screen- which is where your ps3disc.iso file is being dumped to. If you are using an external (non-60GB stock) PS3 HDD then you may have to navigate to it using the Linux GUI instead.
Now, to find out the PS3 iSO image dumping progress simply right-click on the ps3disc.iso file and navigate to Properties (as shown HERE) and left click on it using your USB Mouse. You will then see your PS3 iSO image dumping progress as is pictured HERE. The SIZE will keep updating until the dump is complete, at which point the numbers will simply stop moving. When it's done, you can exit the Properties window by right-clicking on it's bottom taskbar button and selecting Close with your left mouse button as shown HERE. If you prefer to delete your dumped PS3 iSO image first, then prior to closing out just select Move to Trash from the same menu as pictured and it will move your PS3 iSO image to the Trash can (located on your PS3 Linux Desktop) for permanent deletion.
give me some links to what kind of External HD will work with my PS3 i'm looking for 250 to 300.I'm going to BB & CC today because i going to try ins Yellow dawg tonight. Also is there away to transfer stuff from to internal hd to the external hd...
well any hard drive will work as long as you have it formated to ext3 which the linux can read. windows wont but youll need a special program in windows for it to be read.
Or you think i should go with the notebook 160 gig how much will be left after i finish putting Yellowdog on PS3 & PS3 OS.I just don't want all them wires hanging out the side of my PS3 plus i take my PS3 just about everywhere i go.I'm only going to keep maybe 6 or 7 iso on my HD at a time.
