Problems with PS3 on HDTV

I purchased the HDMI cable today for my Insignia HDTV and it says to press the input button until i reach the HDMI station but it says "no signal". I tried it with my Xbox 360 using the colored cables and it worked fine. Any suggestions?

I read on many PS3 support forums and also from my cousin that its easier or you actually have to do this first.

Hook up the ps3 with your supplied cables first and also connect your HDMI but put your tv on the regular a/v input. once the system is loaded go into the settings and change it to HDMI. once you do this your system should automatically just reboot itself, now turn your tv to your HDMI input. things should work fine.
