When I go off to college, it would be sweet to have a HD 1080p TV to play my PS3 on, but I don't think that would be too practical. If I got this laptop (Sony VAIO VGN-AR190G), would I be able to play PS3 games on it in 1080p?

Just to clarify, I know that I wouldn't be able to play PS3 games using just the laptop. What I was wondering is would I be able to use the laptop in combination with my PS3 to play games on the laptop screen in 1080p. Are you saying that I would be able to use a HDMI cable to go from the PS3 to the laptop?

3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (one Type II/Type I card)
1 ExpressCard/54 slot
1 HDMI video port (for connecting to flat panel, high-definition monitors and televisions)
1 VGA monitor out
1 S-Video out
TV inputs: 1 S-Video and 1 RF
Stereo headphones/speakers/line-out
Microphone/line-in
S/PDIF digital audio out
Memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick DUO)

Unless there is a capture card you cant connect your ps3 to the laptop and play on its screen.. THe HDMI Output you see is to connect your LT to a HD tv to play from the LT to the TV.. THe TV inputs s-video and 1 RF is for capture, but yur not going to get 1080p outta that..

Nice Laptop though!

I see. Thanks for the help. As far as you know, are there even any laptops out there that have a video capture card that enables them to play 1080p from a PS3? What about 720p?

I know this thread is kind of old, but I had another question. I've given up on playing my PS3 in 1080p using my laptop screen. However, I think S-Video would be fine also. Could I connect my PS3 to this laptop using an S-Video cable without any display problems?

as long as you use the software for the tuner card to view the Svideo, then sure.

As for resolution, you CAN get 1080p from Component cables as well off of the PS3 (not that it would help you in your current situation), but your display would have to be 1080p capable. A 1080p screen would be one capable of displaying a resolution of 1920x1080. There aren't any notebook computers on the market today that have that resolution on their screen, and with the exception of an extremely expensive commercial card (in the $2,000 ballpark for the card along), there aren't any video capture cards with component or higher in. Part of the whole thing about not wanting people to take HD signal off of cable boxes and record it on their computer in HD/burn it to DVD and re-distribute. Thus is why all DVR's with DVD burners built in, only have Composite, S-Video, and RF inputs.

While component cable will carry 1080p from the PS3, it will only work 1080p for games, and not for blue-ray disks.
