Dont own a PS3 yet as a live in the UK and have never owned a xbox everyone agrees that xbox live was amasing but now Sony comes with its free servers!
So my question is if there are people who haved used both at one time which one is better and are Sony really embracing online play which i think they should.
Which is or will be better?

Well, I don't really think you can go against Xbox Live on this one, it is better, but you're also paying something like 80-90 $ a yr for it. Playstation Network is very good considering you're paying squat for it. On PSN, theres no way to see where your friends are in a game(ex. Resistance), you can't just go staright to their game and join in.XBL gives you that option. But PSN has potential to get better, i wouldn't be surprised if it's comparable to XBL in the near future possibly in the next Firmware update.

im gonna have to go with packman on this. however, i do believe that the PSN will get better through various firmware upgrades to the point where it is just as good as XBOX Live

Sony had free w/ the Ps2 it just sucked ballz.
according to some developers that work with both sony and M$, they prefer M$ to sony. 1 Reason is because Sony makes the dev's do everything (coding and what not) themself, as well as not providing translated sheets that detail on what should be accomplished (they come in Japanese) Whereas M$ just sends them the code and is like here, this is what needs to be put in, and where.
this info can be found in EGM. i believe it was January's EGM for that matter if you'd like to look it up. and no i'm not a fanboy, but i prefer live on to the service i got from PS2. i think sony's got quite a way to go before they're equal on the online front.

If your paying that much then your getting ripped off bigtime. You can get a 12 month card for like 35 bucks. In the comparison of the two, you do get what you pay.

Thats still $115 more than sony is charging and if there service is just as good that would be a turning point for me as in what system to get. And i live in UK and everythings twice as expensive here.

^ it depends on where You live. I beleive it cost the US equivelent of $80 for A one year membership in europe. 80+80=160 160+160 = $320. So, if You live in europe it would cost roughly $320 to play online over the course of it's life-time.
Assuming it only lives to be 4 years old... it should last at least 6 since it was the first one out. Which would bring the total cost to around $480
PS: I'll double check the price, but I'm pretty sure that's how much one year memberships cost in Euros

A 12 month card here(Canada) costs 70$ with tax...my bad...over 3 years it would cost 210$! And in the States, its not 35$, more like 50$ plus tax.
