I am considering buying an upscaling DVD player, but at £200 I am thinking I may get a PS3 and keep my fingers crossed that they do bring out DVD upscaling to 1080p (I've just bought a 1080p Bravia TV :))

Any ideas how long till the PS3 will have this, plus I assume the DVD playback will be region locked?

With my SKY HD box taking up one HDMI socket, If I get the standalone DVD player and a PS3 then I'd have to switch the sockets over all the time. Problem is that I have A LOT of region 1 DVDs, which won't work on the PS3 from what I have read :(

Maybe I need an HDMI switching receiver instead!

I have the same TV

What makes you think the DVD player will upscale any better you TV.

If the DVD is only 576 50 fps. your never going to get a real 1080p. if the DVD/PS3 does the upscaling then yes the TV will say 1080p but the picture will look the same as playing via the PS3. showing 576P on the TV. you may even get a worse picture via the DVD is the scaller is crap.
I had my SkyHD set to 720p and 1080i fixed but changed it to auto, as it made SD tv crap as the Sky HD scaller is crap. the TV scales the 576P picture much better than the Sky HD box does.

unless you DVD does not have Componet out, then you may as well not upgrade yet.
But your not going to get a better PQ from DVD's than Component / HDMI

Hi,

you can get HDMI switching device from amazon.com, or play.com (I can't remember which one. Just check the categories within PS3 in each website).

You can plug 3 HDMI into it so you just switch it accordingly for your needs. I think they costs 20 quids. not bad.

By the way, PS3 is capable of delivering up to 1080p from what I have heard. It is just that the PS3 games are not yet delivering the graphics up to 1080p. I think, if you watch the movie, you can watch those at 1080p. for games , just tune it up to 1080i, or 720p.

I prefer to play games at 720p instead of 1080i as they offer a bit more crispy but that is my personal view.

As for region 1 dvds. I feel your pain as I'm in same boat as yours. That's why I am hoping that someone to find a code soon (or Swapmagic or even Freeloader X) that will unlock that evil region lock of movie and games :D

Hope that helps.

Just by reading the reviews, it is a DENON dvd player, has had very good reviews for scaling DVDs to 1080p via HDMI and playback on the Full HD tvs. Agree that some upscaling DVD players actually give a worse pic via HDMI than via Scart as the scaler in the TV is better, but have read good things about the DENONs.

Will look out for the switching devices, ones I had seen were closer to £100, so if I can find a cheap one that might be an option.

Think 1080p on the PS3 is only for Blu-ray discs, they don't currently upscale SD DVDs.

I think (in the short term anyway), I'll get the DENON and maybe a PS3 too and switch them. Use the multigeion upscaling DVD player for all my DVDs until the PS3 can match it then sell it on eBay or move it to another TV in the house.

Almost £100 for switching device? Dont bother to buy it. £100 device is no different than £20 device. Same goes for HDMI cable. some shops sells "quality" HDMI cable for at least £80, but you can get one from Sainsbury's (someone's claim) for one pounds and quality is still the same!. Even PS3's official HDMI cable is more than good enough for HDMI connection

Anyway, regarding the upscaling player. A bit pointless if you ask me for my own personal view. Many SD DVD are not supported up to 1080p (they can only reach up to 576p (or is it 576i?) or in some case, 720p).

To reach 1080p, you need Blu-ray movie or HD-DVD movie for that purpose.

If you ask me, I can't really see the point of upscaling the SD-dvd to 1080p cos it screw up the picture quality badly, or even it won't make any difference to the picture quality at all etc. What's more, it is nothing to do with your TV or player. it is just something to do with your SD DVD's format that's all. I suggest that if you want a true HD experience, just go for Blu-ray or HD-DVD movie instead of SD-DVD, since the picture quality would be much higher and superior comparing to SD-DVD being upscaled.

Maybe this may help - you could go and have a look at demostration at some shops to see difference (between HD films and upscaled films), and you can judge those yourself whether you want upscaled player or not.

I have been to several demostration involving upscaling players at some big shops and I was not really impressed with picture quality.

I think you could be better off with PS3 instead of upscaling player, since they are in somewhat "middle price" region. Plus you get much more out of PS3 comparing to just an upscaling dvd player at similar price.

Cheers
Diego

If you want true HD movies then yes the PS3 is your best bet, as blue-ray has / will have the largest movie selection. plus you get a games console / mp3 player also. Plus you can rip DVD movies to the HDD. via a PC and memory stick.

If you just want to play DVD's then stick with what you have if it has Component out, if not and you want better PQ for DVD then get a new Player or PS3.

If your really into moves then you should get a good Q 7.1 AV amp and speakers, depening on your budget they will have either a HDMI passthough switch or HDMI sound and video processor. your looking at £1,000-£10,000 inc speaker and cable.

Just ordered a PS3 and cancelled the order for the DENON player. Pretty sure my current DVD player is Progressive scan, so will continue to use that via component for now and hope that a multi-region hack comes out for the PS3 :)

I live in Korea, and own a new 42" LG Xcanvas LCD 1080p TV.

After purchasing an upscaling DVD Player that only upscales to 1080i, I learned that I had to buy a 1080p upscaling model instead. In Korea, this means spending over $350 for a Denon (they price-fix and tax imports like crazy on many things in Korea, so I can't get anything local here for a decent price).

I stuck with using my computer through the TV's VGA input. It scales perfectly, and looks great. I'm not going to bother buying a standard upscaling DVD player. When I need to go to High Definition, I'll get Bluray most likely. The PS3 doesn't upscale old DVDs well at all. I'll stick with the computer through VGA for DVDs. I can't imagine the quality on standard DVDs improving much though HDMI.
