DVD Shrink Locking Up Your computer

1.)Start Simple and work complicated is my motto. So don't format your hard drive just yet, when all you may need to do is clean something off or download and update a file etc....

2.)Trust me when I say that I have looked far and wide for answers and have found no direct answer, but was forced to figure it out myself. While that is the case, I will first explain some simple measures to consider, along the lines of starting simple.

3.)Clean the disk you want to back up first isopropyl alcohol removes foreign material and dries clean but it wont clean scratches, but a clean laser eye on your CD/DVD burner can see through them if it's clean. Use a can of air and blow your CD/DVD burner out and then use a store bought cleaning disk that inserts and wipes the eye of the CD/DVD burner off. So many issues arise when all it is, is some simple little particles called dust. (Sorry don't mean to sound sarcastic)

4.)Check the settings in DVD Shrink. Most likely it's not DVD Shrink that's the issue, but Nero (Nero and XP can have issues). If you get into the settings "Edit", "Settings", Tab "File I/O", you can uncheck "Enable burning with Nero". Then try using DVD Shrink again and if it doesn't lock up, you've isolated the problem being with "Nero", not DVD Shrink. This brings us to the next step,

5.)Update Nero. Nero 6.0 or higher and XP operating system have a conflict. On Nero own website they offer a simple fix, just download and open and install and presto it's a fix. Here is the URL

http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/nero-up.php

The fix is called Update-Package 1 / Nero-6.6.1.15a (It's a big file for Dial Up ISP's) It's self explanatory.

6.)If DVD Shrink is still locking up. Remember start simple work complicated. Think hard about any recent changes you've made to your computer i.e. programs or software changes. Check the Version of DVD Shrink you have. Don't jump in and start messing with the settings in everything unless you know exactly what you?re changing. A good rule of thumb is if you don't know what the words mean then you don't know what changes you're making.
People still over look this to this day RAM. If you?re still working with 256 megs of RAM, even 512 is not that much these days with the size and complexity of todays programs. So if you've downloaded software and it's asserted itself and is running in the background, now your RAM is being used even more, obviously. Think seriously about bumping your RAM up to at least 1 gig. This can alleviate a serious area many computers end up bottlenecking. It makes little sense to pay good money for a fast CPU and a good motherboard and then put a small amount of RAM on it. Enough said, probably to much said. If you have any questions please feel free to email me if that information is not fixing the problem. "Subject" in sent Email should be "DVD Shrink Locking UP" or something along those lines or I'll delete it without a second thought. I could give several more dozen examples or ideas as to why DVD Shrink may lock up, but if you can't figure it out with the simple answers then you?re probably not going to get it with the more complicated answers. No offense. rjme

Shrink locking up computers isn't a common problem. It's always a good reminder to do the "housekeeping" and use some common sense in having enough system resources to run the software. That can be put in one compound sentence. I think the best cure for Nero 6 is called Nero 7. ;) just a personal opinion. Nero has it's own section, so you could have more appropriately posted your info on that program there.

rjme,

I really enjoyed your original post and thought it to be very well put together and informative.

However I do have to respond to your posts after the first. I believe PacMan777 was only trying to be helpful with the response provided and your outbursts were un-called for. Your status of newbie is the same as everyone who started here has had the privilege of assuming and it is not looked down upon by most here and I think I can speak for PacMan777 when I say the title doesn't matter here. We are all here to learn and help which is all PacMan777 was trying to do in my opinion. I don't need to brown nose anybody here as you can see from my title so what would be my reason for this post? Well to be honest I am not sure, but I am hoping you will change your previous posts and act a little more grown up about this whole mix up. I will give you that there are people here who really care about the title and nothing else, but believe me when I tell you PacMan777 is not one of those people and didn't deserve that.

Again your post was a good one and it sounds as if you could help contribute here at AD in a good way and I am hoping you will stick around. (if the mods let you)

Cheers

I'm not sure if that was addressed to me or mybarras or both of us. I didn't put you down, just commented on what was said. So I don't see the need for the attack.

As bbmayo pointed out, no one is trying to belittle you. We all started as noobs. There's a lot of people who visit the forum. Some I'm sure know more than I do. So, I let a person prove themself, one way or the other. I'm not judgmental.

One thing you'll learn about forums like AD. There are categories and it's suggested posts be placed appropriately. That's your choice. I was just pointing out that most of your post concerned PC "good housekeeping". Always a good reminder, but that's been posted many times. As a thread it will only appear a few times unless it's popular and posted to often. You appear to know your stuff, so you would be more useful helping answer questions in help threads. Many new members fail to use the Search feature.

As for your disrespectful outburst, that's your business and the moderators. I'm not here to argue with anyone and refuse to be dragged into personal confrontations.

bbmayo
Thanks for the support.

bang out of order with the verbal attack......if you cannot take constructive advice then maybe this is not the place for yourself.......none of us here claim to know it all,we learn abit everyday from people like yourself and others.......so i suggest you retract your last posts and be done with it or it will be a very short stay at AD for yourself.........
