There is general consensus that the PS3 can hold its own against the standalone players when it comes to BluRay movie playback. There are two caveats though that need to be pointed out:

1. The PS3 does not have 5.1 analog outputs. What this means is that in order to take advantage of the new high resolution audio formats (Dolby Tru HD and DTS HD) and lossless LPCM audio you will need a receiver that has an HDMI input.

2. The PS3 does not upconvert regular DVD's to 720p or 1080i/p. However, this ability may come with a future software update.

Aside from those two things there's little to complain about the PS3's playback of BluRay movies. You may also want to get the optional Bluetooth remote if you're not used to the game controller.

On regular DVD's the PS3 will output a decent Progressive scan (480p) picture. I wouldn't call it rubbish but it's a step down from an upconverted picture.

You can connect the PS3 to your Denon using an optical cable. The PS3 has an optical port on the back so it's pretty straightforward. Just make the necessary choices in the PS3's Audio and Video setup menu.

Maybe someone else can comment about the Samsung plasma.

I have the PS3 as my only DVD player in the entertainment system. It connects via HDMI to a 47" LCD TV and via optical cable to the audio amp. I don't game (my 8 yr old grandson does though) - I just wanted a computer device connected to the internet at one end and a Hi-Def TV with a Hi-Def DVD player on the other end. With each PS3 Operating System update, I figure I'll get more features (like upscaling).

I was so pleased with the regular DVD 480P picture using the PS3 that I actually took out the stand-alone upscaling (720p and 1080p) DVD player from the entertainment system. The color was so much better with the PS3 than the upscaling DVD player, even though the resolution was slightly less.

So that's my take...

What you need to consider when using a console for your media player is what sony proved with the ps2. The ps2 was the first console to play dvd's. The amount of useage as a dvd player directly effected how quickly your laser would burn out. I had a ps2 that I used to just play games and another for travel that was used for games and movies. The second burned out within a year. I would suggest getting a standalone. My .02

It does an ok job... the biggest question would be how often you use it for that purpose. It's a game system foremost and if you want it to last longer it'd be better to go with a standalone for the simple wear and tear factor.

I have used my ps2 for DVD movies for almost 5 years now and it still works prefectly. And a majority of it has been DVD+RW also.

Dude, the quality of PS2 for dvd playback is so bad that I've only tried once, even with component RGB. But anyway the tendency nowadays is to have the dvd players as cheap as possible, nothing like my first one, Sony 7000, this was a good machine for 5 years !

Yeah... my first Toshiba player was one of my best... had to finally change when I went to Progressive scan and the newer player speed and smoothness wise wasn't as good as the older. I'm pretty happy with the Oppo upscaling player I've been using for over a year now though... but I guess the slightly off-mainstream but good brand players would be more like that I'd guess :)

Personally (Well if i havent allready bought a PS3) i would really wait for the BDA standards to be finalized at the end of october before jumping into the blu. But if you must get in now, i would say the PS3 is you safest bet since it has been reported or rumored that it will be one of the only future proof players after the standards are finalized.

Also, im not sure what DVD player some of the previous posters are comparing the PS3 too. Becasue if ind the exact opposite. I find the DVD playback on my PS3 to be comparable to a cheap walmart (Apex) DVD player. When compared to a quality oppo unconverting player, the PS3 look quite pour.
My old HD-A1 look smuch better than the PS3 dvd playback, and the Xa2 completely destroys it.

I actually brought a PS3 for bluray and a poinneer 507xd 50" plasama.
i have just upgraded the cable to a QED HDMI SR.

now i have seen a indifference from when i test drived the TV in the store.

The Poineer was shown to me using a blu ray samsung player and casino royal. When I paused the picture you could see the whiskers on bonds chin crystal clear. When i pause on the PS3 the pictures is not always clear and definatley not crystal clear.

Why has the Samsung Blu Ray player on test pulled my PS3 to pieces, is the technology in the samsung player far superior.

I was told on purchase that the PS3 is the best way to go.

thanks

the PS3 is currently a good buy because it was cheap and still looked better then DVD. You can not expect a vidoe game system, which at most has a meager Blu-ray play back function, to compete with standalone players whos sole purpose is to play it.

I find it really hard to believe you can tell a difference from 720p and 1080i.

I think that what most people see is the glitches from the TV itself ...

Depending of brand/tecnology, it handles "better" 720p or 1080i.

Of course 1080p is the way to go :)

I downloaded the latest patch for the ps3 and it included upscaling regular dvd's.

Hotchef- What HDMI cable are you using? Poor quality cable could cause a quality loss.

There's a lot of buzz over at avsforums on the 1.8 update so I decided to see for myself.

BluRay playback seems to be unaffected so I tested three HD players only for upconversion performance:
Toshiba HD-XA2 with 1.5 FW
Toshiba HD-A1 with 2.2 FW
PS3 with 1.8 Update
all using HDMI connections.

Displays:
Sony KDS60A2000 1080p SXRD
Panasonic PT-AE900u 720p Projector on a 110" Da-Lite High Contrast Grey Screen
both ISF calibrated

I viewed several DVD's including LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring, The Fifth Element (Superbit), Men In Black (Superbit), and Mr. Incredible.

My subjective ranking on Upconversion performance:
1. Toshiba HD-XA2 - BEST by a wide margin (the ReonVX HQV chip still rules)
2. Toshiba HD-A1 (by a slim margin over the PS3)
3. PS3 with 1.8 update

My settings on the PS3:
Upscaler - Normal
Format - Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr
Superwhite - On
RGB Full - On

Overall, a good effort from Sony.

@error5: I'd like to hear your take on this. I know you have similar equipment.

@dblbogey7: Have you tried the 1080p/24 output on your Sony Pearl projector?

Added: The PS3 with 1.8 does upconvert thru component connections on NON-Copy Protected discs.

uhmmmmm, after all, with the 1.8 upgrade, PS3 is one of the best all around players available:

Upscaling 2o generation (DVD,VCD,SVCD)
Good performance on 3o generation (Blu-ray)
Streaming media from network too !

That's very good now, so I don't have to boot linux to do it :)

What's missing ? more games, internet radio, universal remote compatibility :(
