@JaS89,
Bummer.
What version ps2/chip do you have?
If you have an older ps2 chances are it won't read dvd+r single or dual layer regardless if you boot with a dvd-r

ive got a version 3 ps2 with the Mars III MA-502 chip. i used to have the magic III chip and that didnt play +R's at all, but then i got this Mars III MA-502 chip and for some reason it plays +R's but only the Ritek ones (weird). Also when i play the original it plays but it still makes these funny click sounds when its booting, so i dont know y my backup wont work? it also doesnt work in brothers version 7 ps2 with a magic 3 chip.

anyone got any suggestions, any help would be much appreciated.

thanks :)

ikkle word of advice lads and ladettes,don't use discs made by car company's as they are shite(ie.hyundi/mistibushi),i've tried them all and i'm now selling 'original unused dvd looking coasters'on e-bay,also before anyone put's in a reply,they should be made to read the detailed method provided by crowy earlier as it will save a lot of time and reduce pointless reply's!,i've read all through this now and there's nothing thats any more informative than the last forum,think somebody should start a '.vol file extraction' thread so we can rip this baby to dvd5.

I think L-Burna made some excellent progress on the extraction issue last time round. The main problem now seems to be getting a decent rebuild. The "DVD checks" issue now seems to have been eliminated with the patch from Toxic. Am gonna read back a little again on the last thread.

@Jas89,have a read of this:

* Compatible with DVD 9 games (Xenosaga)
* NTSC and PAL, V7/V8/V9/V10/V11 ready

Sorry to disappoint you but if you read closely it says 2 things of interest.1: This chip is not designed for your ps2 version.
2: It says this chip has no problem with dvd9 originals(Xenosaga) but does not say it will play dvd9 backups.
The best suggestion I can give is to maybe sell your ps2:( and get a later version and a chip that is known to work with dvd9 backups.
Look after your backup because it's probably ok!
Also not sure if the magic 3 chip is dvd9 compatible?This is for the magic 3.1+D9.

The Magic 3.1+D9 is the latest advance in modchip technology for your v1-v7 PS2 console. It is DVD 9-compatible (double- layer discs), and has improved code that fixes the bugs in the older Magic 3 chips. One chip is compatible with all consoles up to v7!
Lastly, I have a v9 with ghost2 chip, plays everything.
If you decide to upgrade your old one do some research!
I spent nearly a month reading and comparing different chips and decided that after reading reviews from others the chip I got is one of the best I could find.

thought it was the big company's made the discs and ritek,fuji etc supplied the dye??,probably wrong tho,hyundi really are crap discs,got a pack of 24 that are useless(leant one to my mate to see if he could get any joy),dvd9,i always pay through the nose,cos you don't wan't a shite disk at that price,and you do get a few more duffs with the cheapo's,however bulkpaq (orange/fuji dye)are cheap and totally faultless in my experience,shame they don't do dvd9 but maybe in the future who knows.

AMD 3200XP (2800 O/C)
KT6V
WINFAST FX5700 256MB
512MB 400MHZ RAM
SATA 120GB MAXTOR
Just thought i'd put my specs on display for anyone thinking of getting a P4 hyper threading and all that bollox,don't listen to intel,their processors are crap(although bulletproof!),i put togeter a pc for my mate with the same stuff i had,he ran a P4 3.2 800fsb HT instead and mine kicked his arse ridiculousley!,AMD rock(but i wouldn't get the 64 just yet,lots of probs apparently),you can put mine together for about 350 quid now,and it out performs these 'pcworld'800 quid rip-offs by miles
sorry,luv my pc a bit too much,anyone found a .vol extractor yet cos i think i can do a dvd5 if i can find one using toolboys patch,
promised myself i wouldn't fart about with GT4 anymore but i'd like to see it on dvd5 at one point,cannot do it without the volume extractor tho.

There's a 'VOL extractor - WINVOL - at http://www.planettribes.com/tribes/files.shtml

Gotto be signed up to get it though. Might prove useful.

Sounds like somebody's going to have to release a VOL extractor and Rebuilder to cut out unecessary movies.

Ppl, i was wondering if there isn't a way to burn the game to a regular DVD and i've come up with one, even though i'm not sure it'll work. The problem with the game is that it's too big, right? So why not using the program DVD Shrink and put it in a regular size? If this is not possible, can you tell me (step by step) how to burn to a double layer dvd (which programs do i use and everything)? Thanx all.

No rest! No mercy! No matter what!

@ everyone with mars III I can confirm that these chips play backup dvd+r dl on version 7 scph39002 and my friend has version 9. Between us the backed up dvd+r dl verbatim discs work flawlessly.

As for any other units the chip is fitted to, I cannot confirm if this works.

@DarkGaara

Read back to page 2 of this thread for details of DVD-9 backup.

As for DVD Shrink, this won't work because it's not a standard DVD and the mpeg files are actually stored in a VOL file and need extracting before they can be downsampled.

Ok I had a look at the DVD-5 coaster I made a couple of days ago by chopping a bit off the end of the file and noted that this one did something that the DVD-5 I made with layer-0 only didn't... It played the entire opening FMV sequence before freezing at the loading screen. This has got me wondering about something mentioned in GT4 official thread, that the FMVs are on the second layer... but the toxic patch works upto that point even on the dodgy DVD-5, meaning its allowing the use of files that are supposed to be on layer-1. So what I'm gonna try is extracting the layer-1 vol file, downsample or remove and dummy the FMVs, then try a rebuild and append it to the layer-0 iso. Maybe a shot in the dark but will give me a bit of insight into what this patch is actually doing.

I'll report back in the next 24hrs and let you know what develops.

@Moufa-man,just looked at your dvd decrypter info again:
First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196,608 X
Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 16,580,591 XX
Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 1,494,175 XXX

Layer Information:
Layer 0 Sectors: 1,297,568 (50%) XXXX
Layer 1 Sectors: 1,297,552 (50%) XXXXX

You said this is ntsc so could be the reason why it's different to mine (pal)

First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196,608 X
Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 16,099,743 XX
Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 1,819,007 XXX

Layer Information:
Layer 0 Sectors: 1,622,400 (58.7%) XXXX
Layer 1 Sectors: 1,141,536 (41.3%) XXXXX
Can anyone else copy/paste this info from dvd decrypter for the ntsc version and pal version to see if they compare as the same?
