Yes I agree. I use an Epson C62 which is fine for label printing. Not only that but I can get ink cartridge refills in UK for £4 each. The C42 which is an even cheaper model at the moment is also OK for labels. I have to say that I used to have a Lexmark Z55 which was fine too for printing no bother disc labels but Lexmark could quite easily give you their printers away for the amount you have to fork out for their ink which is a total scam. I threw the thing out after realising it cost more to use it than run my computer. I use Neato brand labels and puncher and have never had a problem with playback.

I'm wary of direct-to-disc printing.

I'd like to be reassured that such an activity is not going to scratch the undersurface of the discs, or force me to leave fingerprints all over the them during removal from the printer.

Has anyone got some facts and figures?

I too have had no problems with labels, but after reading these posts, they just reinforced my opinion from the beginning,"will these labels bother playback?" I use sharpies now on everything, because , unless I'm going to sell backups that look like originals,(heck, id may as well sell them as originals, because the prison time would be the same, might as well make some cash in the process :'S) then why bother with labels ? Most of the problems I have deal with disc quality most of the time, example, I can copy from a verbatim backup, but not a memorex. Weird, may be my burner, I doubt it though. I'm a verbatim addict, because I've only had about 3 coasters out of about 400 burns. Good track (no pun) record though. One thing about labels though, dvds can last for about 100 years? or so? supposedly? I KNOW the labels won't. Oh well, my 2 cents worth.

DVD's are estimated to last for around 100 years, better branded ones, but we dont know for sure since they have not been around for long enough. In a hundred years my grandchildren will let your grandchildren know ;-D

No, they will say Dvd`s weren`t those used in the stone ages?
Something will most likely replace DVD's and we will be backing up on that media. As in 8 track to tapes. But I agree the labels on my VHS tapes are falling off now and I put those on in 1993. So ten years later I wouldn't be surprised if happened to DVD's as well.

If you plan to burn and print CDs or DVDs in-house, be sure to look at the Bravo Disc Publisher by Primera Technology. Bravo uses a robotic arm to first burn the disc and then prints full-color, photo-quality images directly onto the surface of the disc. No labels are required! To find out more, visit www.primera.com/bravo

I have been using an Epson Photo 900 direct CD/DVD printer with AMAZING results. No worries of scratching VinylPush, the printer comes with a plastic tray to feed the disc through the printer. The disc never comes in contact with anything that could scratch it. Lables are a BAD idea. I was a believer in them and have used them for years on Cd's but have had problems with them on DVD's, even using an applicator and high quality labels. This printer is definately the way to go!!

I recently purchased the Epson R300M that prints directly on the disk, awesome printer for $220.00 US. I put disk in from the front unlike the 900 that goes in from the back. Very convenient. Uses the printable (white top)disks of course.

I started out by backing up my DVD's and placing Neato labels on them by hand. I think that was a HUGE bit** of a mistake. A couple of the dvds played fine, but 2 of them played very well to begin but about a quarter way into the dvd, it started to pause during play, flicker, glitch and then became impossible to watch....I sat there in pure discust. Actually i got so angry i threw out the dvd's because i thought they were crap burns. I have not yet been able to prove if it was the labels or if it was the burn but I will not be labelling n e more of my DVD back up n e more. On the other hand i have sucessfully labelled all my Ps2 backups and they play on PS2 fine and dandy like sour candy :)

If you can get the printable Ritek G04s then the printing is pretty easy to do. I've also heard some people using a spray fixative/clear coat to get the glossy look. I know www.rima.com carries the printable G4s DVD-R. I think newegg might also...sent them an email and Im waiting to hear from them. One thing...you might want to look into aftermarket inks to cut down the cost. Original Epson carts are around 25-30 dollars for the color.

The new Canon i865 is able to print to discs. UK price seems to be around £160 (www.dabs.com).

Canon's ink prices are already quite low because you replace each ink separately.

Replacement inks are incredibly cheap. Colour inks for my S520 are less than £2 each!

DVD lables interferring with disks being read properly in some dvd players and not others, Using princo dvd 1x media and toshiba sd-r6012 burner firmware 1332 and burning with Nero and Alcohol 120 I have tested dvds and found them to work perfect before appling neato lables with applicator, and found that after with lables they would play on mintec 1600 perfect but not on toshiba dvd player and burner that they were made on, however after removing lables by soaking them in hot water and scrapping them off, they worked perfect on everything, so lables even applied perfectly interfere on some equipment.

I have stopped using labels on my DVD's, because they always cause my DVD to stop playing and freeze. I don't recomend using labels, just use a Sharpie and you will have no more problems.

I made a backup of 'The Ring' a few months back & stuck a label on it. I then ran it quickly through my stand-alone, skipped through the chapters to check the burn, everything was fine. Now, last night i went to watch it, it wouldn't read, data error came up on-screen on tv. Laid offending disc label-side down in a saucer of lukewarm water with a drop of washing up liquid in it & soaked the bloody thing off. Once it was removed, the remaining traces of gum removed, and dried off, i put it back into dvd player and guess what ???
It played from start to finish flawlessly !!!!!!
Labels, GRRRRRRR !!!!

Yes just tried to play an old dvd that was labled with glossy cd label.

started skipping at chapter 4, took it out peeled off label with a little water to help peel, after removing label i put dvd back in the same player and played flawless through all chapters, so i agree labeling with cd labels are a huge mistake.

i am currently trying the cd core labels, they are much smaller and lighter, but if they don't work then i will be just using a cd-r pen and writing around the centre hole.

cheers.

ive experience some problems with games that ive apply labels to, but with movies i really cant remember when was the last time i had to remove one so it can play. if it helps, these are the labels that i use. tdk matte labels, pretty cheap at "brandsmart" 100 for $12 dollars. i agree doe, labels can sometimes give you problems.. but to me it doesnt happen all the time. these are my two dvd players 1.zenith, and 2. mintek.

SGDVD - The inner core labels will work fine. the problem seems to lie with the label being placed over the surface of the disc. If you look at a DVD-Movie, the label is nearly always of a high grade material, sometimes a filament plastic. Paper just doesnt seem to work. Some DVD-Movies, have two layers to a label.

I started off using DVD+R disks and I was labeling them all. I noticed that any DVD that I had that was over maybe a month old would play very badly or not at all. The funny thing is that they played perfectly when first burned. I threw a lot of them away thinking that they just don't last long. This was pretty discouraging. Then I read this forum about the labels being bad. I started removing labels and they all work fine. I bought an Epson R300 printer and now use writeable DVDs. I'll have to see how their longevity is. Experimentally, I burned a movie and checked the disk with K-Probe. I then installed a label and checked it again. The PI and PO errors were at least ten times as great. I know this subject has been beat to death, but I thought I'd add my 2cents.
