If you don't have Nero, and would'nt mind spending a bit of $$, try DVDFab Platinun. You can use it to backup your DVD collection taking care of any copy protection issues as well as convert the files to various formats (ipod).
I have used DVDFab Platinum to convert, and it does okay for an ipod, you can customize what you want and then convert. It will take sometime, so be prepared to wait. Also, the quality is good on an ipod, but not so good on PC playback, dependent on you setup. It played back fine on Dell 1505 laptop, but on my Dell Desktop with 23 HD monitor it looked bad and pixelated.
