Hello everyone.
I just went an got 300 and pathfinder and are trying to make back ups. But when pathfinder is in my computer it says no disc, i know my drive works because i just did 300.
Does anyone know the problem, or how to fix it. I would be very thankful

300 was an easy job due to light copy protection. I've not done Pathfinder yet. Off the top of my head, I'd suggest using AnyDVD, they have a trial at Slysoft.com. Or you can use one of the free ripper programs to decrypt the DVD and copy to your hard drive, then open the ripped files with Shrink. DVDFab HD Decrypter from DVDIdle is a good one or use the RipIt4Me setup from Softpedia. Those suggestions will handle the problem if it's just copy protection. Then you get into player capabilities, compatibility, and bad presses ...

the disc will not read from anything, it does not even show that their is a disc in my computer.
Maybe is it some kind of copy right that does not allow it to be opened an played on a computer

Does the disc play okay in a standalone player? If so, it should at least open to play on your PC. The copy protection to prevent recording only comes into play when you attempt to record. It should have nothing to do with playability, though Sony's heavier protection did cause a few player models to act up. See if it will open in another PC.

With it playing on your standalone, I find your PC suspect. Like I said, the copy protection is there for preventing recording, not playing. Try it on someone else's PC, preferably a late model and make sure the DVD is clean and shiny (no fingerprints or smudges).
edit:
I forgot to ask, what programs are you using to try to open the DVD. Try a trial of PowerDVD or InterVideo's player.

Thanks for the review. Sometimes the fun is in doing problematic backups. I know I've got a few stinkers just becuase the movie studios put heavy copy protection on them. ;)

Check back after you try it on the home PC. Like I said, the PC should at least recognize the DVD and it should play on the PC in a player program. Copy protection is just to prevent recording. Otherwise the studios open themselves up for lawsuits. They got into trouble not long ago for making the copy protection so difficult some players were having problems. There's the possibility of a flawed press. That happens occasionally. When that happens the DVD may play, but not record. Still the DVD is usually recognized.

You're welcome.
It's sometimes a matter of hardware compatibility between the PC drive and the media the movie is recorded on. It can also be a quirk in the software or PC interface. Either way, when a DVD plays on the standalone and won't be recognized by a PC, it's time to cross check on other systems. As I mentioned, copy protection is only to prevent recording. That means a PC shouldn't have any problems playing a DVD movie if it has the right software and hardware. It is confusing when a PC plays some DVDs and not others, but it happens occasionally.

Hey Pac!! The one thing that you didn't mention was possible firmware updates for his drive. You can check your firmware version on that drive and if an update is available you can find it at http://www.rpc1.com

memcco, everyone has different opinions on movies. I personally found it very entertaining and action packed. Our job here is to help make backups of the movies they enjoy.
ufcfan-
Glad you got it backed up. Check the firmware version on the other PC and see if that will help in the future.

I'm with you on the fixes. I'm surprised DVDIdle gives the program away for free, but I'm not about to look a gift horse in the mouth. Keep us posted.

Open My Computer and right click the burner drive and select properties. At the top select the tab called Hardware. You will see a list of your drives. The one that is your burner should say the type of burner it is and have the version of the firmware next to it.

Manufacturer:(Standard CD-ROM drives)
Location: Loacation 1(Secondary ATA Channel)
Device Status: Working properly
found driver ver. and digital signer but not the firmware, ill try searching the IDE#. wonder dxdiag can help with this? unless Standard is actually the name of the manufacturer?

I tried this morning backup the PathFinder movie using AnyDVD and no use, it was always giving me the message that it was protected and can't do a thing.
The only difference I have with this new computer is WinVista Premium.
I then quickly tried if RipItforMe worked, seems to be ok.
But still I wanna know why with AnyDVD it didn't work. Anything i need to enable or disable in Vista to have it to work??

It should say something like TSST corp CDRWDVD TS-H492C DVD/CD-RW in the All disk drives area. You are looking at the Device Properties. The one I listed above is my drive on my computer at work not my personal drives!

You made the changes that it recommended and it still did not work? Open the Device Manager and see if the drive shows up with any warnings. You can also uninstall the drive and then do a search for new hardware and let Windows re-install the drive.
Other than that I can't really be sure. I do not have Vista nor plan to get Vista. It is a pretty OS with too many problems. You might need to repost a new thread for Vista and DVD Problems. Here is a thread dedicated to answering Vista problems. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/308662
