Connecting PS3 to Laptop just for media sharing?

Hi,

My PS3 is connected wirelessly to my router and working perfectly! Games run smooth and downloads seem to be extremly fast. I also have a laptop connected wirelessly and is also got an Excellent connection. Im running 54g.

I wanted to do some media sharing and music streams perfectly as do my avi files via TVersity. However im having problems with a large (4.5gb) 720p MKV file. Its running on my laptop smoothly but my PS3 is showing it juddering. The juddering improves if i tick the "Reduce bitrate if too high for my connection" box. It also improves as i tell it im running a slower connection then i actually am. For example i've got an Excellent 54g connection but i tell the software i have a Poor 11b connection. This has almost rid all the juddering, but it does still very slightly in fast action scenes.

So im guessing the problem is my connection? Is there anyway i can wire the PS3 and Laptop JUST for media sharing?
If so how do i go about it? I would like to continue using TVersity to run the media server if possible.
