Im thinking about buying a ps3 but would like to know something first. Can i connect my laptop to the PS3 directly? I know about TVersity but from what i understand it streams files from the pc to the ps3 over the internet. I would rather play files (music, video) directly from my laptop. Is this at all possible? also, can one play files directly off an external hard drive connected via usb on the ps3?
you can this is how i do it. open nero then nero mediahome then add the files i want to share start the server. then go to the ps3 and search for media devices under sections like videos music photos. then it should find it. you have to be connected to the ps3 via Router (wat i use) or a cable mosly a crossover network cable. i do this. PC/Laptop to Router. The Router to PS3 with network cables becuase the files transfer much faster and the connection dont get lost.
well i have no experience on this subject but on the conversion thing i can help you a bit. the files cannot be converted on-the-fly so to speak (e.g. while its streaming/playing) but need to be done before. Certain programs should be used to convert them, and the process heavily depends on your PC specs and how much processing power and memory your pc has available at that moment (depending on what programs are being run at that time) when you want to convert it. Also it depends a little on the program (effiency, but not a major factor) and hugely, for obvious reasons, on the size of the file in question. I presume you're talking about movies? then the conversion takes about 90-95% of the movies actual length, although it may take less time for some reasons i dont know... anyways hope this helps
edit: ah...ok....just saw the description of TVersity...looks like it will be doing it on the fly, sorry my mistake :)
