i am trying to backup 'smokin aces' and i am having all sorts of problems. initially i tried just using dvd shrink 3.2, encrypted the dvd fine, but then it opens the "Checking Disks" dialogue box and it freezes at the point where it says "DVD-Video files sorted; Phase: Checking discs" which is about 70% done on the progress bar.
I tried using DVD Decrypter first and using shrink with the files, and i made it to the 'burn disk' dialogue box, but everything froze before it actually burned anything. everytime it freezes, i have to restart my computer.
i have upgraded firmware for my disk drives, and i have run multiple spyware scans and a virus scan. i tried burning with my anti-virus and spyware programs turned off with the same result.
just to make sure, i backed up my copy of boondock saints, which worked fine, so it must be something with smokin aces?

Try ripping it with DVDFab HD Decrypter then running the output folder it through Shrink.
DVDFab HD Decrypter
Run program, insert disk, select 'Main Movie' or 'Full Disk'

i tried using that software, and it actually seems to have set me back! the first time i tried it i "accidentally" switched to a firefox window and typed in a new url while shrink was opening the files! oops! complete freeze up and had to reboot. my 2nd try i didn't bother opening firefox, and i got to 2% before it froze up and i had to reboot. 3rd try i shut down my anti virus and anti spyware programs and it got all the way to 11% before it froze up!
i watched my temps on the 3rd try and i was at 116 degrees when it crashed, so i don't think heat is my problem.
is there another program that does the same thing as dvd shrink that i can try? this is getting frustrating...

i just tried to backup a different movie, children of men, using just dvd shrink. it got to 56% encoding and then the progress bar stopped and everything pretty much froze. i clicked the box to enable the vid preview, and it was still going. i watched as the preview went through all the special features, but with the progress staying at 56%. the preview ran to the end of the special features and it opened up the "checking discs" dialogue where i had been freezing with other movies. once it got here, nothing else happened and my computer was totally frozen and i had to reboot once again...
i have a p4 3.2 ghz and 1 gb of RAM. a lite-on dvd/cd-rw combo drive, and a plextor dvd burner...

just did 'family guy, stewie griffin; the untold story' without any problems, so it's only newer dvds that are giving me problems.
i just don't get it, because two days ago i backed up my dad's copy of 'wild hogs' without any problem, but now i can't seem to back up any of my other movies that are new or semi-new...
anyone? ideas? please?

Spend some time reading the hundreds of posts regarding the latest copy schemes and how to work around them. Although DVDShrink is still a useful app, it and DVDDecrypter are no longer capable of dealing with today's releases without some help.

could you possibly link me to any one of these threads that would give me an idea of what to do differently?
i have searched here and the web for threads where the same thing is happening and have been unable to find anything. dvdfab and decrypter are working perfectly and giving me no problems. dvd shrink is freezing on me at random times either during encoding or right before burning. i am not having problems with the process, i am having problems with the program, so reading threads about the process don't help me in the slightest...

For testing purposes, set the output for a DVD-9, the CPU load would be less than the 90+% normally seen and might give a clue as to why it's failing.

i tried setting it do dvd 9 and it finished encoding the dvd (children of men). it got to the checking discs step and stopped because my dvd burner is only single layer...
if it's all about system resources, why does dvd shrink work fine with older dvds and not newer ones, even after encryption is removed?
anything else i can try to get shrink to work with dvd 5?

It does work with newer releases - as long as the CPU isn't running 100%.
When you say it works with older releases, are you using it on an unshrinked disk?

no, i used it with boondock saints and it worked perfectly. that movie doesn't have many features though, you think the newer releases are just that much bigger that my computer can't handle it?
i don't see why, my computer is p4 3.2ghz with 1gb of ram and should be able to handle this type of thing easy.. it's not a temp issue as i have 2 thermometers in my case and am using speedfan to monitor mobo temps and none of them are high enough that they should be causing any problems.
i have run spyware and virus scans, checked for registry issues, and run a disk defrag... what else can i possibly do to regain performance and avoid the freezing? i'm stumped.

Try one of the products like DVDFab Platinum that rip and compress in one package - they have trial periods - and get DVD Shrink out of the picture.
I don't think your PC specs are relevant to the problem.
