Bear with me on this one, hopefully it's not going to be too confusing!
I was backing up an original DVD by my usual method using Ripit4me, Decrypter and Shrink. After it had gone through the RI4M and Decrypter process, then opened Shrink, it did it's analysing bit, then wento to start writing, it came up with an error and failed. I was using Infinity 16x DVD-R's. Tried again using Infinity 8x DVD-R's and worked fine, no errors. Strange.
OK, so then tried using a a previously backed-up DVD using just Shrink, threw in an Infinity 16x DVD-R and it went through the process fine with no errors. Can't understand why it will only use Infinity 8x when backing up an original.
Also used a Tesco's 8x (I know, cheap but that's all I had about) and that failed.
I've got a couple of Optiarc DVD RW AD-5170A (plugged em straight in, no software required). These are 16x I think. Ihaven't done any firmware updates as I don't know where to find them, what one's I want or how I do it (sorry, bit of a noob when it comes to that).
So to sum it up:-
- can back up an original DVD using an Inifinity 8x DVD-R but not a Infinity 16x DVD-R.
- can back up a backed-up DVD using an Inifinity 8x DVD-R and Infinity 16x DVD-R.
Any ideas?
If you need me to post a log file, can you just let me know how and I will.
Hi MaxedMan
Update the firmware on the drive - the latest is 1.13.
This one is for the drive connected by ide cable.
If it's connected by sata use 1.12 (the line below the p-ata one).
If this drive came with a pc though you'll need to check for a firmware update at the pc manufacturers site.
To update/flash the drive to the current version have no discs in the drive, no programs running and keep the power on. Then just run the exe - takes a minute or 2. Reboot and your firmware will be updated.
If it still fails after the firmware update post the log. Just copy and paste it in a new post. Edit the serial too - they begin w/ 1A, 1C or 5C.
The 16x discs you're suing could be made by MCC (great stuff) or Philips so hopefully the firmware update will do the trick.
Also if you're not already don't burn at max speed - burn the 16x ones at 8x.
