just wandering - because i just did a backup which took approx 20-25minutes to get to the HD - now was wandering if this is ok for the drive or not - because i remember a while a go there was a artical about runing a dvd drive by using it for too long - ie encocding and ripping straight from the dvd.

any help?

Think about it, 20 minutes of access the drive verses 2 hours to watch a movie which is constantly accessing the drive. Which is harder on the drive? lets maybe watching a two hour movie.

thx for the reply diablo - but thing i was worrying about is that - when it's ripping its ripping at a variable speed - ie going up and down for 20 min - where as when watching a movie - its a constant 1x (right?)...

but ill take your answer to be that it should be ok :)

Ripping is no more harmful to your drive than watching a movie is. (I mean heck....it's designed to read files on a dvd) That having been sed, I decided to save my burner for burning only, and installed a DVD-ROM for viewing and ripping. ROMs are cheap. So if u rip/watch alot of movies on yer puter and wear one out.....get another one for pennies.

There is no problem so big, that a brick placed against the proper skull cannot fix =)
