my friend told me about emule and after using it for a while (and liking it) I recieved a letter from my ISP that I was sharing material that was infringing on the digital millennium copyright act. I was pretty freaked at first but looking around on the web I kinda got the feeling that it was nothing to worry about. So I have two questions: 1) has any one else got one of these letters or know of someone who has? and 2) I haven't downloaded or shared anything since and I'm going crazy--will the emule tutorial keep the law off my back? thanks

Now what happened here is you were downloading/uploading a movie and u unfortunately began to upload to vivendi/universal studios who in turn got your ip address and sent a letter/email to them. Now they are just warning really saying the ISP can be held responsible, so they arent making a direct threat at you as of yet! Now could this have been prevented?? Maybe, ipfilter.dat and peerguardian may have contained the IP Addresses of whoever downloaded form you and blocked them from connecting, However now your isp may be watching you so going back to eMule so fast isnt a very good idea. I recommend you take a shot at IRC!

okay so does IRC have an indexing page (like sharereactor?) Also thanks a lot. I had to call my ISP like 3 times not including about 5 e-mails I had to send trying to figure out what the letter was actually saying. Seriously, if they are going to send me a letter, when I call their people they should know what the letter is about and how to respond to it.

True ye lol, well the thing about IRC is its not p2p! You'll have to read a good IRC downloading guide. To find good channels try packetnews.com

recieved a letter today from my ISP stating I have been nabbed for sharing a certain 'security' program on e-mule. I'm wondering how, IP filter was up to date, but i didn't have peerguardian installed, so perhapse they 'slipped thru the net', so to speak.

I've been running eMule for over a year with no issues, but I've done specific things to help:

Running linux firewall with stateful IPTables allowing all outbound and inbound only to emule server, port 4662

Configured emule so that nobody can see my files (preferences, files, see my share = nobody) - this is important because if it's allowed than anybody can see what you're sharing and identify you as the source. With it disallowed they _have_ to use the emule network and then do a query _and_ start downloading before they can see who's offering it.

Turned off the web interface - reduces the vulnerabilities (people _will_ try and hack you as soon as you come online!) as well as prevents people from seeing what you're hosting specifically, per above.

See if that doesn't help keep people off your back. ;)

There is unfortunately not a lot that can be done about this problem with eMule. You can run all the firewalls and ipfilters in the world but if ur uploading, then some guy who works for some corperation could easily setup somethoing on his computer to download from all sources and log the ip addresses they came from! Only real way to protect yourself would be maybe to kill your upload completely which will just get u banned from a lot of Donkey Network servers and that's not good!
