I ripped an entire movie using SmartRipper (was going to convert DVD to VCD, though not anymore) and now it appears that I'm stuck with these 7 GBs. Anyone know how to use compress an already ripped DVD files to fit onto a DVD-R?

Rip the movie again as it seems you don't have the important IFO file. Use DVD Shrink to rip the DVD and not SmartRipper!
If you get stuck, use the guides here at AD or mine. Link below.

I've got this same problem. dvdshrink is no good because it can't handle writer locked to a different region (2) to DVD (1)

ok, seems we're getting away from the initial thread. SmartRipper was used to create a copy of the DVD onto the hard drive. These VOB files are 7.2 GB and I'd like to know if anyone has had any success on resizing a raw VOB file other than using Shrink? I've tried Shrink and it does not like the *.IFO file that SmartRipper had created.

Ok, first of all don't use SmartRipper as it is crap for DVDs. DVD Decrypter is much better and it produces better quality rips time and time again.
Make sure your files are in a folder names VIDEO_TS. When they are in this folder, CloneDVD can be use to compress the VOB files etc to under 4.7GB, which allows you to burn to a DVD-/+R(W).
For a CloneDVD guide, use the link below.

Actually you need to compress your files WELL BELOW 4.7GB in order to fit on 1 disc (my favorite number is 4.4GB), and either start over with Shrink or Decrypter, the 7 GB of files you have on your hard drive should be sent to your Recycle Bin, that will give you enough free hard drive space to store 2 ripped DVD's. We didn't mean to get off track; we just wanted to start you off on the right track from the start -
Believe it or not we're here trying our best to help out as others have helped us in the past -

Smartripper is NOT crap. I use it all the time and no problems. DvdDecrypter is installed in my system just for the status quo...lol. Anyway, I have used CloneDVD along with AnyDvd since I discovered its simplicity and reliability.
