Hey all,

After numerous sessions of me banging my head ona brick wall, trying to get this to work, I finally solved the great mystery of "video streaming" on the PS3....

Please read on, and i hope this answers many questions...

With the advent of Firmware Update 1.8, we are now given the opportunity to stream media from UPnP and DLNA enabled devices/servers. This is a very powerful tool and absolutely indispensable for any media center device in the household.

Prior to firmware update 1.8, users had to copy files one-by-one from storage devices to the Playstation 3, the worst part being that the video formats compatible were few and uncommon. Mp4 and MPEG-2 converters were the best tools available at the time.

Now, with firmware update 1.8, we can now stream photos, music and video from our UPnP and DLNA enabled devices! One in particular Nero Ultra Edition 7 enables the users to share folders on the network via a UPnP service named Nero MediaHome. The power of NMH is that it can transcode video files on-the-fly, as well as music/audio files. What this provides the user is the ability to stream their Avi and other format video files LIVE on their Playstation 3. What NMH does is encodes the source file (i.e. .avi) into a Playstation 3 comaptible format (auto-detected) on-the-fly.

Steps to get Nero MediaHome Running
-------------------------------------------------

Note: This guide pertains to Nero Ultra Edition 7, build 7.8.5.0. All other subsequent versions or previous versions may differ and may not offer the exact same features/menus.

1. Purchase/Obtain a copy of Nero Ultra Edition 7

2. Install Nero Ultra Edition 7 using Typical settings, if you choose not to include all the applications, make sure you at least have all the media-related applications (transcoders, streamers, MediaHome, Scout).

3. Nero MediaHome and Nero Scout are MUST INSTALLS.

4. Once the installation is complete run Nero Scout.

5. In Nero scout, select the folders you wish to share on Nero MediaHome, once selected, make sure to hit Index Now from the Indexing menu. (Be patient...It took a little over half an hour to index 40GB of media!)..therefore allow "1G/pm" (one gig per minute!)

6. Once the indexing is complete, run Nero MediaHome.

7. Check to see if the shared directories are OK.

8. Options can be changed to your liking.

9. Network: Check the network interface which you computer and Playstation 3 belong to.

10. Devices: Make sure your Playstation 3(UPnP/1.0) is turned on, and that it has Allow Access shaded off. (It means it's allowed)

11. Transcoding: No changes needed.

12. Click on Start Server

13. Browse your media from your Playstation 3 and Enjoy!

Configuring Your Firewall/Access Denied
-----------------------------------------------------------

If you have Nero 7 Ultra with all the recent updates- make sure EVERYTHING in Nero is closed.
You DO NOT have to have Nero Scout to run Nero on your PS3. If in doubt, go to your task window(CTRL-ALT-DELETE) and close anything that is related to Nero (Usually starts with NM such as NMIndexingService)

My Router is a [i]NETGEAR DG834GT

Step 1. - Configure your router for PORT 54444

To get help on configuring your hardware firewall/router, follow the provided link to get help on how to set port forwarding on your specific router.

http://portforward.com/

Step 2. - Configure your Windows Firewall

Go to START / CONTROL PANEL / WINDOWS FIREWALL / and click on the "Exceptions" tab.
If you don't have Nero MediaHome in the list, you can either add that program to your list by using the ADD PROGRAM *OR* you can click on ADD PORT to allow port 54444 to go through.

Step 3. - Go to START / NERO 7 ULTRA EDITION / SHARE / Nero Media Home

Nero MediaHome should now be open and the SERVER SHOU BE STOPPED!!
Click the Network tab and make sure your network is enabled.
Set the Network name at the top to whatever you want it to be called and then click on the Network Port radio button to "Use a fixed port number" and make sure it reads "54444"

Now go to Devices - Make sure you have the PS3 enabled (Mine reads "UpnP/1.0" and "Windows/UpnP/5.1/Dlna" )

Those are your major settings to get things working.

**IMPORTANT** On the "Shared Directories" tab - Make sure you select "Share Individual Folders Only" since you are not using Nero Scout.

The last step is to set your Directories. I can't help you much here. You need to know where the files are located.

Step 4. - Give your PS3 a try and see if you can now see the files

If you don't, try restarting your PS3.

Make sure your network I.D. name on your PS3 is not the same as your PC.

More than likely, the problem lies within your ROUTER SETTINGS

Troubleshooting
---------------------------

If you are unable to find certain menus/options with your version of Nero Ultra Edition 7, please make sure you update to version 7.8.5.0. Some features have been added, such as enhanced device permissions, this is critical to the guide.

Firewalls/Routers have to be set to allow Nero MediaHome access through the Local Area Network, please consult your user's manuals for those products for further details.

It's good to test out your settings and fine tune if it doesn't work properly. You may have to select NTSC or PAL under video transcoding, but it shouldn't be an issue.

Feel free to reply to this if it worked for you. Give me the satisfaction that I was able to help somebody out!

I am currently using Nero 7.8.5.0.

I have not ran this under your version of Nero, so i would recommend that you upgrade to Nero 7.8.5.0.

Sorry i'm not much help...i would just upgrade if i were you!

Fantastic guide Phoenix, this helped a lot. One problem though... I used this guide to help with TVersity as well, my PS3 recognizes the server (TVersity), see's the files on the server, but when I try to play them it says "a netork error has occured" and will not play. Any suggestions with this problem?

As for Nero, the set up went well and my PS3 recognizes Nero as a server. I haven't had time to let the shared files index and test them out, I think I'll try this out over night.

Thanks again for the excellent and informative post,
Chris.

I am runnin my videos from Windows Server 2003 and the specs for this are very high (ie: a dual core (2 x 3.0ghz)PC with 4GB of RAM. So you may just need to increase your RAM to at least 1GB. This should help you out a little.

Another thing you could try is to access your Task Manager and set a HIGH level of proiority to 'Nero Media Home' AND have the Media Home running minimized in your system tray.

Appreciate your comments odin24.

Thank you very much.

As you error msg...check the Network settings on the PS3 itself and you may want to re-configure the setup again, so that you have things like uPnP Enabled and Media Server Connection Enabled.

Let me know how you get on...sorry for the late response.

Hey Halo13,

Quite simply, the reason why you cannot do this is because the file is not PHYSICALLY on the Hard Drive of the PS3! You know what i mean???

Becasue you are 'streaming' the media, from an external source (another PC), you cannot fast forward, rewind, pause, etc... because the encoding is (what 'techies' call) "on-the-fly"...(meaning: the data is being sent to your PS3, whilst you are watching it!)

If the file was stored on your PS3, then these controls would become active.

Since my last post I've been able to view only pictures through Nero, still no video though. My server connection is good and UPnP is enabled.

It's like Television. You cannot fast forward, rewind or pause TV because it's not IN your TV or on a device connected to it. It's a signal through a cable/receiver.

You can fastforward a bit while streaming, but its only 1.5x and its a bit sketchy.

Hey man...
I tried out the guide but I have a problem...
I went into network settings > settings and connection status list...and it says 'UPnP - Not Availiable'
What do I do?

Edit: Do you have to have a wireless connection?... Because mine is currently wired...

Edit No.2: OK, you don't need a wireless connection...I got Nero Mediahome on my PS3...
Now the problem is that whenever I try to open a video file it says:
'The Data Is Corrupted'

Any help?
