DVD Shrink Decoding very Slow

I am using Ripit4me to prepare the movie (Blades of Glory) and Shrink DVD to encode.

My hardware ripped the movie quickly but Shrink DVD is taking 2 hours to encode.

It should not take this long (I know because I have used it on other computers and it took 25-30 minutes)

Is there something I am doing wrong? I need some help on this one.

Hello.

Check the Quality Settings tab after clicking Backup! and note whether the "Deep Analysis" and "Quality Enhancements" features are enabled. They will add significantly to processing time if you don't have a fast dual core system. Even with a Dual core they add considerable time, if lots of compression is needed. Otherwise, something else is definitely amiss as 2 hours is way too long.

I checked before I started and those settings were off.

I used DVD Shrink on Spiderman-Silver Surfer and it took about 30 minutes. The next DVD I ripped was Evan Almighty, no change in settings and Evan Almighty took almost 2hours. No changes in hardware and no changes in the setting on DVD Shrink. I did some more checking this morning to be sure all settings were correct and they were. I can't figure this one out?

Where and how do I check those settings?

The strange part of this is that on "Blades of Glory" DVD Shrink was slow. On Spiderman-Silver Surfer it took 1/3 the time and on the next DVD "Evan Almighty" it was slow again?

Any ideas why?

born2ride's suggestion is a good one if you're re-encoding directly from the DVD itself and not from ripped files or an ISO image. See guides below.

I am using DVD Shrink, after I have ripped the files and removed all of the protection. So the files have been ripped and I am using DVD Shrink on the ISO image.

I don't have an answer for what's causing your problem. Have you tried using the DVD Shrink uninstaller inside the Shrink folder to uninstall and then do a fresh reinstall. Is there a lot of difference in the amount of compression needed for the disks? Have you tried using a different ripper? There's DVDFab Decrypter, DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD or any of the other background decrypter, the AnyDVD ripper, etc. Maybe your processor is having problems and overheating, slowing the process down.

I have not done the uninstall and re-install. I can try that.

There was a difference in compression. Fantastic4-silver surfer needed very little compression.

The other two movies needed significant shrinking.

But on my home computer, when a movie needs significant shrinking, DVD Shrink still took more like 30-40 minutes as opposed to the 2 hours it is taking on the setup I have here.

Ripping has not been a problem. I am using Ripit4me and DVD Decriptor and that is working perfect.

It is when DVD Shrink encodes that I am looking at 2 hours for it to compress the movie and that doesn't make sense based on my experiences with DVD Shrink.

I will do the uninstall and re-install and see if that helps. Thanks for all the great suggestions. Keep 'um coming.

What processor is in the system you're having problems with? If it's Celeron-based it'll be quite slow when there's lots of compression required as compared to a full Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon.

I had this same exact problem. It was because it switched from DMA to PIO mode.

Right click "My Computer" and click "Manage"
Select "Device Manager"
Look for a device called "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
Expand the whole list of controllers under that
Start right clicking > properties on your Primary and Secondary IDE channels
Go to the "advanced settings" tab
Under "Current transfer mode" it should say DMA.

If ANY say PIO, uninstall the one/s that do, and restart your computer.

Every once and awhile mine will do that and I have to switch it back to DMA.

Thanks. I will give it a try. I also am beginning to think that the computer's age also is a contributor to this problem.

You guys have given me some great advise. I really appreciate all the help and suggestions.

Tomorrow I will check the DMA and PIO lead.

Thanks

There are guides for checking DMA status linked in one of my posts above.

Thanks.

I have checked that out and that is not the problem.

So I believe the problem is the computer is older.

So I have decided to just rip and record the movie and menu which will mean that there should be little compression and I can get the movie withoty director comments, etc. I just watch the movie 99% of the time.

Everybody in the forum has been great and offered great ideas. Thanks to all.

I couldn't help but notice you didn't tell what the processor was, or the resources available in the system you were complaining about. File size and the system's processing abilities greatly effect processing time. You noticed the difference in file sizes. Out of curiosity, what model is the PC, what CPU, how much RAM, how much free hard drive space, and what's the operating system?

This is my son in laws computer so I am a little embarrased that he has not been something more up to date.

It is an HP Pavilion MX7 32GB Hard with 17Gb of free space

Intel Celeron CPU 1.70Gb with 256mb of RAM.

I am sure that you can tell me for sure if it is the hardware. At this point, I am convinced it is the hardware.

I have got him to make some updates with a brand new external hard drive (220GB) and a brand new external DVD Burner and 4 2.0 USB hubs. The hard drive and DVD are connected to the computer through the 2.0 USB Hubs. The DVD Ripper programs and coying programs are on the external drive and the Movie data is stored on the external drive.

The ripped movie data is sent to the the external drive through a 2.0 connection on the computer to the 2.0 connection on the external drive.

But- I think - it is the computer that is slowing the process down.

Your thoughts?

Thanks.

I have told his wife (my daughter) that he needs a new tower for xmas. His machine is just to old to do some of the things he wants to start doing. He is not a gamer but things like burning dvd's and some webpage creativity.

I appreciate your help

Looks like you realize the problem. I'd go along with old PC. Burning CDs was the technology when that equipment first came along. Burning DVD video takes a lot more.

born2ride
Nothing to building a PC if you have decent tool skills and don't stick your fingers in light sockets with the electricity on. Start a PC build help thread and some of the regulars will overly discuss each part you want to install.

Over the past year Intel has turned the PC industry on it's ear. The C2D processors and PCs are cheaper than a lot of the P4s and AMDs and they're faster and better. Not getting stuck on particulars, you can have a better PC now than anytime in the past and for a better price. I'm tempted to build another now. 2GB of good RAM for about $60, PSUs $30 t0 $150 according to how much wattage and brand name one wants to buy. Good mobos for $100 or less. Cases for less than $50, for a good one. Just look at the new C2D processors. They've pretty much made the others obsolete.

You're welcome. If you decide to give it a go and want any input from me, PM with a link. Price sort of depends on how far you want to go. There's a lot of difference between a typical work machine and a mean gamer.
