Well I'm having a problem using DVD shrink. First of all I'm using Memorex lightscribe 4.7 G DVD-R+ and using Nero 8 trial to burn, and this with Vista Home Premium. Everything seems to be smooth but my dvd players won't read the DVD's.
I also tried three different players, my PS2, a RCA dvd player, and a Phillips DVD player, none of them read it.
The DVD works perfectly on my PC.
I just tried burning Fantastic Four:Silver Surfer and (original and burnt) in my explorer they're identicle in size (It was only a 4.1 Gig DVD) so there wasn't even any compression involved.

What am I doing wrong??

a lot of AD members would say that the memorex discs are your problem, one easy way to see is use verbatim media.
however it could be a firmware issue that is causing this problem.

try and see if there is a firmware update for your burner, and if there is that might help with your problem.

also what speed are you burning at? try different speeds to see if that helps

also dont use labels either.

it really doesn't matter how the compression is this has to do with the burning part.

Thanks I'll check all of that and I'll try using my other burner instead.
And do you mean to not use the Lightscribe labels? The last disc that wasn't readable did not have a label burned onto it.
I'll try all of this though, thanks.
Anyone else have some more ideas?

As far as the firmware update goes, there are updates available but not of those updates have Vista in the O/S system list. Maybe Vista is the problem?

no lightscribe is fine, i meant dont use paper lables.

try the verbatim light scribe if you want to use lightscribe media.

Since you're using R+, I'd suggest changing the book type to DVD ROM for the sake of compatibility. That is if your burner has that ability. Some do and some don't. With most newer players that's not an issue. Compatibility problems are fairly common with older players. As mentioned, sometimes simply changing media can help. Memorex has gotten a bad name from selling CMC media. Without checking with a program, like DVD Identifier or the utility in Nero, we don't know what you're using for sure. Google and download DVD Identifier and let us know the DVD manufacturer info.

XP or Vista, if there is a firmware upgrade, your drive(s) probably need it. They're more drive specific than OS. Check with support for the drives or your PC manufacturer and make sure.

Ok well I downloaded the latest firmware update for my HP 740b DVD writer...opened the updater and said my system wasn't configured for a 740b and said no update needed. :(
On my device manager it also shows both of my DVD burners as cd rom devices which I think is normal?
I'll also try the dvd identifier.

Used disc identifier on my Memorex discs and it's CMC Magnetics. Is this most likely my problem?

I'll put it this way, CMC is the reason Memorex got the nick Memosux. A lot of people complain about them. I'd try some other media, such as Sony +R, Verbatim, or any of the name brands with Made in Japan on the label. Those are the safer buys, not saying there aren't other good media. Personally I've had good luck with Sony +R and I've been doing backups for quite a while. Let us know how the different media turns out. Even if not the problem it's not really a waste. You're increasing your stock. It's not like it's something you can't or won't be able to use. ;)

Way back when I first started backing up my movies, I just went along with whatever media was on sale. That included TDK, which is sometimes produced by CMC Mags. Needless to say, that batch of DVDs have caused all sorts of problems.

That was then, this is now. I've only used Verbatims or TYs for the past 3 years and I have yet to run into a problem.

Try some Verbatims or if you're ambitious, TYs.

If you buy TY, it had best be TY. The interesting thing is that TY manufacturers for a number of brands. I've got Verbatim, Fuji, and Sony, manufactured by TY. Believe it or not, Verbatim even sold some CMC manufactured DVDs. The house manufacturer for Verbatim is MCC. They regularly rate on the forums as good or better than TY. I never can tell the difference. LOL So, brand loyalty can be a bit of a problem sometimes. My Sony +R manufactured by Sony in Taiwan does as well as the TY manufactured Sony. Ricoh is another good media I've used in the past. Some of my friends swear by Ritek. I've not used that one in a long time. They also manufactured a lot of media for different brands, including Memorex. If Memorex had stuck with Ricoh and Ritek, they would have better media. Just my 2 cents. ;)

I agree with Pacman and 300bowler about the firmware updates and disc brands. I have been using a brand called GQ from Fry's Electronics for about 5 years which has a Sony manufacture's ID according to Imgburn. Very rarely do I come across a problem with these discs. Is this the only movie that you have this problem with or does it constantly happen while using Memorex with other movies? The reason why I ask, is I have had something like this happen a couple of times with 2 different movies. They would play fine in the pc and both Sony dvd players, but not my Panasonic player. Both Sony and Panasonic players support -R media which is what I use. All other backed up movies play fine in all 3 players using the same exact media.
