I just installed Shrink (again) and I've just thought that are the default settings under preferences the best or should they be changed for better dvd ripping.

Normally the default settings are fine unless you have special circumstances.

I'll go over what I use.
Preferences tab,
I use Taiyo Yuden and leave the default size set to 4464 MB. That's a matter of opinion though.

I generally do movie only so I don't care if the Hide audio/subpictures box is checked. I ve never had issues with small ones causing problems.
I have it set to Automatically open VIDEO_TS subfolders... Makes them easier to get loaded in.
I don't have the low priority mode selected. I want it to have high priority. I don't multitask while ripping... much.

Preview Tab, Default.

Output Files Tab, I have everything checked.

Stream Selections Tab, Default.

File I/O tab, I have the "Enable overlapped I/O-"checked. I've got a fast PC and it likes this.
I've got Nero so that's checked too.

thank alot for posting your preferences but I forgot this - how do you get it to rip a dvd and not prompt for a blank DVDR I like to let them sit on my HD before I put them in disc.

What chip are you pushing on your system. 5200 x2 for me

When the burn menu opens after you select Backup!, set your target as a hard drive folder. That lets you come back later with your burning program and burn it.

This PC has a QX6700 Quad core. With your dual core Athlon, I'd definitely try the overlapped I/O.
I've never actually timed it but it does seem to be a bit faster.
