Wasn?t sure where to post this.
OK This one has me stumped.
I am currently using DVD Shrink and Image Burn.
Everything goes OK but when I go to playback the burn, an error comes up on my DVD player, I can hear it SPINNING UP then SPINNING DOWN.
This happens every time I burn a Dual Layer, It never was an issue before, I have burnt about 40 Dual Layers with only one or two coasters.
Here is where it gets weird, If I unplug the DVD player (Maganavox) and plug it back in, then put the disc in it will read it.
I have tried uninstalling the IDE controllers in the device manager and rebooting my computer also.
The player is less than a year old.
I am using Verbatims from RIMA
Could it be a Region Specific problem?

I doubt it has to do with region since it will eventually playback and Shrink should have made the backup region-free.
I've seen something similar to this, but usually just opening the disk tray and then reclosing the tray is usually enough. What's happening is the player isn't able to read/locate the IFO file on the disk for whatever reason. It does seem to happen more with DL media than SL for me as well. I think it's just the particular player. I can usually use a different player and it reads the disk just fine. Have you tried using a different player just to see if it's the player or the quality of the burn?

No I havent tried another player yet, but whats stumping me is the 40 or so good Dual Layer burns I have already, this problem started about 2 weeks ago and I some will play if I Hard boot the player and some will not.
I was hoping for a bad batch of discs, as I am almost thru the pack.

I'd suggest seeing if another player will read them. If so, it would seem to be that your player just doesn't get along well with them. Otherwise, there's a burning issue that needs addressing.

Sometimes resetting the booktype to DVD ROM for the burner helps compatibility problems. The drive has to support changing the booktype though and it only works with +R and +R DL. Most newer players, that shouldn't be an issue, but it doesn't hurt. I burn all my DVD videos booktyped to DVD ROM. If the backups play okay on your computer, then the problem is likely compatibility with the player. Is the player still doing okay with factory DVDs and the previously recorded DLs?

Yes the Factory Dvd's, - single layer - and the first 40 or so DVD-DL all play fine, no problem.
And yes the DL-Burns play fine on the computer.
As far as a compatability issue, this is a new problem with the DVD Player, I have had a great success rate in the past few months.
This may shed some light, my computer did crash about when I was having the problems, but I think its working fine.
How do I change the bookmark

Most burners are setup by default to booktype +R DL media as DVD-ROM when burned. Fire up ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter and put one of your burned DL disks into the drive. The type of disk, +R DL, and the booktype , +R DL or DVD-ROM, will be disclosed in the righthand window. If the booktype for the burned DL disk is DVD-ROM the booktyping is already occurring. If the booktype is +R DL you will need to set the booktype bit with ImgBurn, DVD Decrypter, or another utility, depending on the burner you have.

Maybe the drives you run across, but many burners have to be changed manually to booktype to DVD ROM.
EFFEDUP
Here's a pic that shows the path on the toolbar. Use ImgBurn to check the function. If your drive is supported, you should be able to fill in the boxes and change the setting if needed. As I mentioned, it may or may not help, but it doesn't hurt.

+R usually needs to be set, +R DL is usually already set. I thought we were dealing with +R DL.

From what I've seen +R DL is usually set the same time +R is set (if the drive supports DL), and vice versa. At least that's the way it worked with my Plex. I only remember setting the booktype once for both when I did it. I didn't use ImgBurn. The ImgBurn gives 2 selections, one for +R and one for +R DL. So, the best bet is to check both settings and make sure they're set to DVD ROM. There is probably no absolute for all burners. Not that big a deal.
Note Nero only has the one selection for changing to DVD ROM.

I will check my home computer tonight, right now I am on my work computer, messing with the booktype. I opened ImgBurn/Device Tab and it says UNDER current profile DVD+RW is this where I need to look?

Pacman I opened ImgBurn
ImgBurn / Tools/Drive/Change Booktype, it shows 9 tabs
[Nutech] - [Plextor] - [Ricoh] - [Samsung] - [Ben Q] - [LG]- [LITE-ON] - [NEC] - [Welcome]
Then under each one of the tabs it shows
Current Media (for DVD+RW Media)
Drive (for DVD+R Media)
Drive (for DVD+RW Media)
Drive (for DVD+R DL Media)
Drive (for DVD+R Media - Temporary)
Drive (for DVD+RW Media - Temporary)
Drive (for DVD+R DL Media - Temporary)
I don't see anything that says DVD-ROM
But like I said I am messing with my computer at work and will try my home computer tonight, I just wanted to see if I was doing this right.

When you open up ImgBurn, on the right side of the ImgBurn window is a pane that is headed by the descriptor for your DVD drive. Scrolling down the pane, you should encounter something like this:
Physical Format Information (Last Recorded):
Disc ID: MKM-001-00
Book Type: DVD-ROM
If bookype is DVD-ROM, then you're already set, if it's +R DL, follow Pacman's ImgBurn description and set the booktype.
You would have to select "Drive (for DVD+R DL Media)" to permanently change the booktyping for the +R DL media. After selecting, it will tell you whether the type is set to +R DL or to DVD-ROM. If it lists +R DL as the booktype, then you change it to DVD-ROM. If it already lists DVD-ROM as the booktype, it is already set.

That's what you're looking for and it's not DVD-ROM or DVD +R or -R. That is the physical booktype of the DVD you're scanning. Put in a factory DVD and that should read DVD-ROM. It appears you used an RW and most standalone DVD players don't support that format. Only the newer multi-format standalone players will support the RW format. If your player doesn't say it plays that format, that is most likely your problem.
In the ImgBurn, you didn't go far enough to see what I intended. Had you gone through the process of resetting your booktype, you would have seen your current setting and your options (if your drive was listed and supports booktyping). Here's what it looks like with my Plex.

Okay, the booktype is DVD+R DL
Follow the steps in the pics I supplied and try DVD-ROM. Where I have change for DVD+R you'll need to select Change For: Drive (For DVD+R DL media).
In answer to your question. It appears it happened. I'm not sure if that's it or it's showing the physical booktype and then what it booktyped to. My DLs are lost right now in a stack of DVDs. I know, I should sort things better. LOL But without checking, I'm not sure on that one.

I should have looked at the log more closely. It's saying the physical disc is a DVD+R DL and it was recorded as a DVD-ROM. That means your drive is set to booktype +R DL to DVD-ROM. Obviously, that isn't the solution to your problem. How does your problem DL play on other DVD players?

Tried the bad Dual Layers in a cheap Mustek Portable player and they all played fine.
The problem player is a magnavox MSR 90D6 RW Player, I didnt think it could be that because its only a few months old and played all the Burns Flawlessly before, I can hear the discs spinning up and down about 4-5 times then the error comes up.
Guess its time to buy my 3rd player in a years time.
Any Ideas on a decent player?

Not sure, mine is a DVP642. It didn't list DL separately, but it played them. After I got it a friend told me there was a firmware update. I'd never done one on a standalone before. It was updating for newer media. I did it and never had a problem. I wasn't having problems before, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway to make sure the thing was up to date.
The one you listed looks pretty good. I'd bet it will play DL, but ask the sales person or contact Philips to be sure.

Not sure, I did it on the Philips. I'd never heard of doing a firmware update to a standalone before. Try your manufacturer's website for support, if there is one.
As cheap as the philips players are and what they do, I'll buy another. Mine's lasted over a year, so it's already paid for itself. Look around, you might find something you like. At least you know where the problem lies.
