I have a feeling that someone will tell me to go through the other threads in order to find the anser to this quesiton, but after looking through 20 pages and seeing that i had over 300 to go I thouhgt I would just ask the question....
I backed up Transformers using Decrypter and DVD Shrink 3.2 -- the backup went great -- burned to DVD-R using Nero8 -- ejected disc and put it back into my PC and it worked like a charm -- ejected from PC and put it into my xbox360 (my home dvd player) and it initialy recognized the dvd and went from the dashboard to begin the movie and then went directly to the xbox wallpaper, and just sat their....
Can someone assist me with this? I have a lot more vids to backup but want to make sure they are going to work... Is their something I am not adding to the DVD that the xbox 360 needs to read? thanks

Hi masterweb
Consoles can be a little picky w/ media. Since it's playing in the pc sounds like a media compatibility bit with the xbox.
What media are you using - try Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell.
Take the burn speed down if you're not already burning at 8x or lower.
Make sure the firmware is up to date on the drive too.

Hey Binkie7 I am using Maxell with the burnspeed set at 2x. The Firmware is up to date per a previous thread i posted to... any other ideas? or do you think its just the media type?

Yeah I'm thinking the media. Maxell uses different manufacturers and they may not be compatible w/ the xbox.
You can try bumping up the burn speed to 4x or 8x. Some higher 16x rated doesn't do as well burned at lower speeds.
Switch the media to the ones listed above.
Give that a go and let us know.

Either or should be fine - I think most xboxs support both formats but I'd go with the -R has a higher compatibility w/ the different players well older ones that is.

Quote: I have a feeling that someone will tell me to go through the other threads in order to find the anser to this quesiton,
Since you're waiting... LOL Just kidding.
I'm curious about using an XBox as the standalone DVD player. It's not very cost effective when you consider how cheap standalone DVD players are nowadays. Plus the DVD players like Philips will play just about anything. I picked one up for less than $75 and it's a multiformat unit. I'd save the XBox for gaming.
If you have a burner drive that supports booktyping to DVD-ROM, that's the best way to solve compatibility problems with a bunch of older drives. Luckily most of us only see problems with very old drives and some of the very cheap items. XBox wasn't made with playing recordable DVDs in mind. A friend got a promo DVD player that plays only DVD-ROM. DVD-ROM is the industry standard and booktyping to DVD-ROM mimics that. The first DVD player had to play DVD-ROM and the last one produced will. The +R format is the only one that booktypes to DVD-ROM, -R won't work.
Here's a note from Microsoft:
CD or DVD Does Not Play
Make sure that the DVD disc is clean and free of scratches and blemishes.
Try to play the DVD in a different DVD player or Xbox 360 console to determine whether the disc itself is defective.
If the DVD plays successfully in a different player, try to play several other DVD movies on your console. If none of them plays, your console may need to be repaired. Contact Xbox Customer Support.
If the symptoms occur only with one specific DVD movie, there may be a problem with the DVD encoding or a physical problem with the disc. Contact the DVD's publisher.

I?m having a similar problem as masterweb, but the following posts have not resolved the problem yet. I have backed-up many DVDs with my Pioneer external DVR (SK12D) using DVD Shrink and burned with Nero Burning Rom. I?m using all the same stuff as I normally do, even the same batch of media (Memorex). Now the backed-up DVDs will only play in my computer and not in my normal DVD players (as they always did). When I put a recently burned DVD into my one of my DVD players, it will not read. When I try another player in the house, it only plays certain parts of the movie (mostly the end of the movie). The only thing different that I?m doing in the whole back-up process is I'm now using Nero8 instead on 7?could that be a problem? Help. Thanks.

Memerox uses different manufacturers so the ones you have now might be made by another manufacturer which sounds like isn't compatible w/ your players.
If it plays in the pc but not the players and you're doing the same steps as b/4 more than likely a media compatibility issue.
So try reducing the burn speed a notch and/or try different media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell.
I really don't think it's a Nero thing. So far using Nero 8 w/ or w/o Shrink I've had no problems.

The way to check that is to use another burner program. It's easier to install ImgBurn, if you don't have it, than to remove and install Nero. Copy your output to the hard drive as an ISO image and record with ImgBurn. If that works, you probably have a problem with Nero8. I saw where someone complained about that before.
To check on different manufacturers for your Memorex, check some old and the new batch and let us know the manufacturer info. Use the free DVD Identifier. I think you can download that from CDFreaks. Just Google and you'll find it. If the media is the same and your old backups work and the latest don't, you may be looking at some dodgy media, or it could be the Nero. I told you how to check for that. Let us know what happens and give us the info on the old and latest media manufacturers.

Or you can use Nero to id the discs.
Pop a blank one in the drive in SmartStart go to tools>cd-dvd speed then click on the disc info tab. The manufacturer info will be there.
Do the same for one already burned.

That's a lotta clicking Binkie. I have Nero, but I still use Identifier or ImageBurn to check DVD IDs. With ImgBurn, all you do is put the disc in and read the info from the window on the right side. Just look for Disc ID.
@lou1079
You said you were using Nero. Would you mind posting a log? If you didn't save it, try the burn again and save the log. Don't worry about it if the other burner software works okay.

lol - it's not that bad :)
Nero automatically saves the burn logs - the last 10. Instead of having you do too many clicks :) just do a windows search for nerohistory. It's will be a text file - just need the last one.

Hi binkie7 and PacMan777
Thanks for the responses! Do you still recommend checking the media even if it's still the same batch (meaning same package of 50) that I have been using with no problems??? Up untill a few burns ago and the install of Nero 8 , all the other DVDs have been played in my normal DVD players just fine...now its just the computer.
I wanted to try the other suggestion and started to download ImgBurn but got a message saying "ImgBurn is intended to replace DVD Decrypter" and would I like "to remove the old' Burn using DVD Decrypter entries on Explorer's context menus". First off, I'm not to sure what that is saying (after all I'm still practically a "Newbie") and second, I like using DVD Decryter for times when other programs aren't working out for me. What does that message mean?
I'm also not sure how to find the Nero log?

When you right click your mouse, if DVD Decrypter is in the menu it will be replaced by ImgBurn. I'd say yes. DVD Decrypter is obsolete for both decryption and burning. Except for it's brief run with RI4M, it's not had much life in a while. You'll still be able to use DVD Decrypter any time you like.
The DVD info is to humor us. What's the deal? You don't want to post the info? And no, the manufacturer shouldn't change in the same batch of media. The NeroHistory log is hid out in the Applications folder, which is a hidden folder. Previously those were stored in Core, inside the Nero program.
Here is the path to NeroHistory in Nero8:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Nero\Nero8\Nero Burning ROM\NeroHistory
The NeroHistory log grows as you use Nero8. The last (bottom) log on the page is the last entry.
The logs will be separated by this line:
====== *** Nero Burning ROM, History File *** ======
It is the last line of the log.
The logs are lengthy, but don't edit, supply the complete log for the job done. You can use copy and then paste into your board message. Nothing complicated about it.
Binkie gave the best solution for both finding the log file and opening it. Search for NeroHistory in Windows (Start/Search). Just click and open Search and run the All files and folders search. Enter NeroHistory as the search object. You may get more than one text file. Double click the file name for the NeroHistory text with Nero8 in the path (I gave the path above and it's indicated in the pic below). Once you double click the file name in Search it opens. That's easier than following the computer path to the log when you need to access it (unless you save the logs path to enter in the Windows address path when you need it).

lou1079 - ..just passing thru, and saw your Nero serial number so i edited it out for you, but as i'm here had a quick glance over your logfile, gotta make my journey useful :)
Quote: Recorder: <PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K12D>Version: 1.00
can see the firmware version of your burner is 1.00 i'm a tad rusty all things burner related so had a quick google, there's a firmware update page here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1732 which says there's a 1.10 version there (but only for Sony OEM drives ie ), but the Firmware was last updated Dec 23, 2003 !! - very old so it could just be that your burner's firmware isn't equipped to deal with all the latest fandangle 16x blank media out there. I don't think it's worth updating to 1.10 as i very much doubt that'll improve anything, what with 1.10 being 4yrs old

the firmware seems to be able to recognise these particular discs correctly, that paragraph's describing the 'media code' of the discs, in this case they're 'RICOHJPNR03', they're 16x +R discs, very nice indeed. (these are some of my favourite & most used discs, i've used a few thousand of these by now (i buy mine as Maxell discs)

Compilation cannot be written on that medium type.
(Medium in drive: DVD-ROM. Medium required by compilation: DVD R/RW.)
...however the burner's refusing to write to those discs. At this point i'd chuck the burner out of a window for snubbing those sexy RICOHJPNR03 discs :) But basically it appears the burner is just too out oold to know what to do with these modern discs, the firmware's basically 4years out of date ie it's just not equipped to know what to do with such modern discs.
edit- a part of the problem could be that the firmware is trying to default to 2.4x write speed on these discs but of course the firmware doesn't know how to do that, so fails
A quick check of the specs of this model burner -
# 1X and 2X CLV at DVD-R - (4X-Speed DVD-R Media is supported but can only write at 2x)
# 1X and 2X (2X Write: 2X-Speed DVD-RW Media Only) CLV at DVD-RW
# 2.4X CLV at +R (4X +R Media is supported but can only write at 2.4x)
# 2.4X CLV at +RW (4X +RW Media is supported but can only write at 2x)
..now that in itself doesn't mean the burner can't use newer discs, it's just that firmware support ended long ago.. It's not very easy to find 4x discs these days but i believe it's possible.

Thanks a lot Creaky!
Question though; I was burning a couple of months ago with NO problems. I was using the same burner and the same batch of discs (16x)then as I'm using now, so the question is how can the problem be related to the firmware (since the Pioneer update was so long ago) or the discs?

Quote: The only thing different that I?m doing in the whole back-up process is I'm now using Nero8 instead on 7?could that be a problem? Help. Thanks.
Yes that could be a serious problem. We've found that the Burning ROM in Nero 8 doesn't work as a supported burner for DVD Shrink, at least not version 8.1.1.0 (current Nero download). DVDs either won't play or won't play properly on a standalone player. My problem DVDs would play on the PC, which had me confused at first. You can record output to the hard drive and burn with Nero Express or go with another burner.
Do a burn with something other than the Nero 8 Burning ROM and let us know how it turns out.

PacMan777,
Thanks for the input and suggestion to use ImgBurn because I was able to play the newly backed-up DVDs using ImgBurn w/ Shrink. But still have one problem (half solved); I had to go with 8x speed dvds instead of 16x because for some reason I can't get the 16x speed dvds to work in one (out of two) of my DVD players. Since I know that these particular 16x dvds have and do work in my burner and player, I don't understand why I have to go with 8x now that I'm using ImgBurn...
If you have any other ideas, please let me know.

Check with binkie on where to find it, there's a modified exe file for Shrink that supports automatically burning with ImgBurn instead of DVD Decrypter.
When you save the Shrink output to the hard drive, Express in Nero 8 will burn the output properly and it plays on the standalone players. I've not tried burning manually with the burning rom. I wish someone would try that with nero 8 to see if the burning rom causes the same problem manually as it does on automatic with Shrink.
Normally it's a firmware issue when you run into compatibility problems with one DVD format playing and another format not. You can even run into problems with different manufacturers. I use +R and booktype to DVD-ROM for best compatibility. It's no guarantee, but it's supposed to help.

@lou1079
If you need the exe for Shrink to auto w/ ImgBurn - let me know - I can post when I get home.
Just to add to the players not playing the 16x media - didn't brands may use several manufacturers so you may get a different one w/ each spindle. Older players may have a tougher time with the newer media.

Hi binkie7,
I do have Shrink set up w/ auto ImgBurn (I saw your previous thread about it listed under ImgBurn), so I don't need the info. Thanks though.
