Neither brand of DVD does anything to bolster confidence. What does the manufacturer Disc ID check out on those? Also, a lot depends on how you handle the process. What decryption software are you using and in what mode? You mentioned nothing of what you're trying to record or what the content size is or compression. Did you use Quality Settings in DVD Shrink? Does the output play the same from the hard drive?
Try to answer all the questions and not just one.

IDs can be checked in a lot of software. The small tool specifically for the purpose is the freeware DVD Identifier. I believe it's downloadable form CDFreaks. If not just google for a download or click DVD Identifier link and download from AD.
I've been using Nero8 8.1.1.0 and no problems. Detroit Rock City runs about 95 minutes, so I would think that would require some compression. Transformers was one of my projects, though I didn't use DVD Shrink to transcode it. It's larger than most releases. Your problem sounds like compression induced errors. Did you use the Quality Settings in Shrink?

When I do my backups I have DVD Shrink do the compression automatically with Transformers I had to remove the sub titles and French/Spanish audio which i usually always do i have always done this even when i had xp the only differences would have been my dvd drive and i used nero 6 but nero 6 does not work in vista so i had to get nero 8 this is when i ran into the problem. The disk id check did not work and i was getting an error which said ERROR : Unable To Initialize Disc In Time : Not ready -Medium not present [02/3A/00]

There's a problem when auto burning with the Burning Rom in Nero 8 that doesn't occur when burning manually with Nero Express. Open the problem DVD (not play) on your PC and see if the IFO, BUP, and VOB files are in a Video_TS folder. Then open the DVD you burned with Nero Express and see if you have the Video_TS folder with the files in it. Standalone players look for Video_TS folder and need the right structure to play properly. I did the same thing and the auto burned DVDs with Nero 8 play on the PC but not the standalone players. The Nero Express burned DVDs were fine. There's a sticky at the top of the Shrink and Nero forums stating the problem exists.

Notice he said it works when burning with Nero Express. That eliminates the possibility of incompatible media. And who made your Maxell's today? Give us a manufacturer ID on those, if you want to call them good. And the problem is with the Nero Burning ROM. I tried it different ways and it keeps coming up the same. Something is up with the Burning ROM in Nero 8. Every time I use it the discs won't play on a standalone player, but will on the PC. So, doing playback checks on the PC doesn't work for this problem.
The issue with Nero 8 version 8.1.1.0 is with the Burning ROM when used to auto burn with Shrink. I tried both the Demo and Trial downloads from the Nero site. With one installation I ran Shrink with Nero and got no Video_TS folder. I cleaned up the system using the general clean tool from Nero, ran a reg cleaner and did all the good housekeeping chores. I reinstalled Nero 7 and no problems. I cleaned the system again and installed Nero 8, again, with a fresh download. Once again there were problems with Shrink and the Burning ROM. The Video_TS folder appeared, but the recorded DVD still wouldn't play on a standalone player. The problem recorded DVDs play fine on a PC. On one standalone player the DVDs aren't recognized, and on another it takes an excessive amount of time to load and then the DVD goes to a track and starts looping. So, there's definitely a problem with the Burning ROM in version 8.1.1.0. I checked it extensively and that's what keeps showing. As I mentioned before, the Nero Express burns manually without problems. I reloaded Nero 7 until the situation is resolved. I don't need the Blu Ray and HD features from Nero 8 yet and Nero 7 appears much more stable at this point.

If you need your Nero 8 for Vista and still want to use Shrink, just change the target location for output to the HD and burn manually with express from there. It only takes a couple of minutes extra, if that. At present if you want a supported burner, you'll have to go with one other than the Nero 8 burning rom. No updates for Shrink and Nero may not address this problem.

When Nero support contacted me, they made it clear that Nero isn't responsible for Shrink support. Though the author of Shrink is supposed to be working for Nero, Nero isn't bound by his previous public gifts. Whether it was an accidental change or intentional is open for debate. Nero has Recode, which is a Shrink clone. Were the author of Shrink to update the program, it could lead to copyright infringement issues. Call it shenanigans or whatever, but it appears Nero has written off Shrink being able to use the Burning ROM as a supported program.

ok first of all I recently installed a new dvd burner that had nero 7 essentials oem version. Unfortunately these versions are very limited and don't contain the multichannel plug-ins and then you have to pay more money to get these plugins. So I figured it would be easier to just get the full ultra edition nero 8 and be done with it. I was able to use the enable nero burn in the dvd shrink and burn right to a disc and it was so much faster that I loved it but my plugins with the oem version had run out and I was unable to get sound encoding after the trial period. So I installed the nero 8 and tried to burn the same way I had straight from dvd shrink to dvd and it would burn but wouldn't play in my dvd player. Here is the solution I came up with through alot of trial and error and about 20 discs later. diable the burn with nero in dvd shrink and just save the file to a folder somewhere on your hard drive then open nero smart start and on the bottom left hand corner there is a pop up menu that you will find an icon for nero vision. open nero vision and scroll over make dvd and when the menu opens to the right click on dvd-video. next a window will open with a box to the right that asks what you would like to do? click on add video files and open the folder in which you saved the dvd shrink files for your movie. next you will highlight all the video_ts files in that folder and click add files it will ask if you want it to be one video file answer yes this way it's all one file and no need to seperate. it will then anaylize the video file and then add which takes a few minutes . next you can rename the file in the box to the name of the movie click next choose your title menu background click next againand burn options will come up choose the dvd drive you wish to burn in then click burn... nero vision will then creat title menu and transcode your project and then burn to the disc. make sure to have nero scout disabled before you begin or it will fail sometime during the burn process and also make sure you have a dvd in the drive before you begin. the reason for having to use nero vision is that in previous versions and in essential versions it would accept the re-author made by dvd shrink now with nero 8 it has to author the files itself in order for them to work in stand alone dvd players. the plus side to this is the quality is a little bit better the down side is that it adds about 30 mins or so to the burn process..... best of luck everyone and I hope this helps.... burn on

I am really not sure what are you trying to do, but it sure looks like you do a lot of something for nothing...
Once DVD Shrink saved the Video_TS folder to the Hard Drive, open Nero Express and burn your DVD-Video. There is no need to mess with Nero Vision, transcode, create menu...You already have a DVD structure created by DVD Shrink. Just burn it to a DVD, that's all there is to it. You can even use ImgBurn if you wish( especially if doing a DL disc). What you do is "convert" a DVD to DVD with Nero Vision!
Just as a quick question...why people that have full Nero package use DVD Shrink and complain about not auto-burning with Nero? Why not use Nero Recode instead? Shrink/Author/Burn.

There's stickies proclaiming the fact and a few discussions rambling on about Nero 8 not being supported burner for automatic burning with Shrink. So, lots of reading material on the subject. It's been noted on several occasions that the burner programs from Nero 8 will burn Shrink output from the HDD manually without a problem (Nero Express or the Burning ROM). There's nothing wrong with either Shrink or Nero 8. It's just simply Nero 8 isn't supported by Shrink for automatic burning. Nero 7 was the last supported version.
What makes sense for owners of Nero 8 (full version) is to use Recode, which is Shrink's clone. Once removing the copy protection is done, Recode does the rest of the job (transcoding and burning).

Nero 8.1xx is bad. All my dvd burn with it will not play in stand alone dvd player. They only play on pc. I ripped them to hdd then used nero 8.1xx to burn them. I also tryed smartstart and express. Still, they did not work. If your dvd don't play in stand alone dvd player!!! update to nero 8.2xx All I can say, is it fixed my problem.

I've had no problems burning manually with Nero 8 from the start. If the update is the solution though, good for you. Nero has a habit of using its customers as beta testers. Sometimes they release things that shouldn't be and updates cure the problem, and sometimes it's just the opposite. ;)

Hmm... I wonder if the message would be more appropriate written as:
"Nero is using its customers as beta testers. They usually release things that shouldn't be and updates sometimes cure the problem and many times it's just the opposite. ;~)"
I think Nero is horrible when it comes to its customers, using them as Guinea pigs. Loooking back at the previous versions of Nero, can easily see how many buggy versions, patches were released before they came out with a stable version.

LOL I see your take is a little more drastic than mine. I actually liked Nero 7 and it didn't seem to have many bugs. I've not encountered any problems with Nero 8 yet. I can't say the Shrink issue is a problem. The authors simply didn't plan for 8 to be supported by Shrink. I won't go as far as some in accusing them of doing it intentionally. It does look strange though. ;)

LOL! Maybe I was a little too drastic!
I am running Nero 7.0.8.2 ( I know some people would say that I am ages behind and should probably update), but,NEVER had a problem with it) I can't say the same about the previous ones- a preview button would not work, or NV would crash, or out of sync issues...I came across 7.0.8.2 and it was a wonder...nothing wrong with it. Any of the subsequent updates/upgrades did not bring any improvements that I personally use, so I decided to stick with the one version that it proved to work with my current system configuration, the one that so far proved to be infallible. I am sure there are some people that might have had problems with this version of Nero that I use.
Many of the errors are due to Nero being buggy, but I also think many are due to user mistakes.
As for "Nero 8 not being able to autoburn from DVD Shrink"?!!
This is not a bug!!! People should stop whinning, just wise up a bit an realize that there is no reason in the whole world why the creators of Nero should continue to write some freaking codes just to have DVD Shrink support! Why in the name of Buhha, Allah and all the gods would they do that when there is Nero Recode?!! Should they do it just to be "nice"?! Maybe is just me, but I simply cannot see a good reason. Just because "it used to work" is not a good reason.
I mean, then why is Fentago not writing DVDFab HD Decrypter to automatically start DVD Shrink, or why is he not incorporating FixVts, like Ripit4Me did,or something like that, right? C'mon...Wanna have the burn start automatically after the transcoding, get ImgBurn or use Recode instead of Shrink.
Piss me off, and I Will ignore You!
