I've tried to view related posts on this and other forums to help solve my problem but my situation is a bit different from others...

With DVD Shrink 3.2 I've tried to back-up the disks of a television series-- released in 2006-- but each disk strangely gives me the exact same result. First, the video preview shows that it completes the initial 'Analyzing' process correctly reviewing the entire contents of the disk. Then, when beginning the back-up phase, the video preview image is blank (completely black) through 4% of the deep analysis and the decryption status of the disk reads 'not encrypted'. Then, the video preview shows the title menu running through its sequence several times, by 8% the warning message comes up 'Data error: cyclic redundancy check' and DVD shrink will not continue. I noticed on several sources online people were suggesting that the disk was probably dirty or scratched. But this same scenario happens with ALL the disks of this same TV series and none of them are dirty or scratched. Still, I tried cleaning one of the disks and trying again and this time DVD shrink stopped it right away and said "DVD shrink cannot continue: copy protection error". It 'remembers' each disk I've already put in and received the 'CRC' message with and the 2nd time the disk is tried it catches the disk right away, spitting out a 'COPY PROTECTION ERROR'.

I never had this situation occur before and I can shrink/back-up other disks easily. I was wondering if, because this series was released so recently, and DVD shrink probably hasn't been updated recently, if the disks just had a more sophisticated copy protection/encrytion than DVD shrink could handle. Or am i over-looking something I can do to alter the settings and bypass the problem?

Any suggestions?

Why not try ripping your DVDs to your HDD with DVDFab HD Decrypter and then processing with DVD Shrink.

yeah dvd shrink won't handle alot of the newer releases by its self being it hasn't been updated in years.

so you have a few choices use dvdfab decrypter to rip dvd shrink to transcode then burn or use anydvd behind dvd shrink

clonedvd 2 + anydvd is another option which would be my pick

DVDFAB Decrypter Platinum, does it all. 30 day free trial. Then cost is $49.00. DVD Clone2 and ANYDVD costs more than twice this amount.

Not to sound mean or anything, but the situation you described is the same exact situation that everyone else starts regarding CRC errors. "Related posts" would have yielded the same responses found here.

But anyway, yeah, shrink was last updated in what, 2002? 2003? Newer titles, like yours from 2006 have newer encryptions, therefore, Shrink can't handle them. CRC errors can be a result of dirty/scratched discs, but if they're flawless, it's probably because of a newer encryption.

DVDFAb is probably the best free program out there to crack these encryptions (it's also updated quite often). I'm an AnyDVD guy myself though. To be fair though, DVDFab was quicker with the latest crack of the newest encryptions.

Latest AnyDVD to rip > VOBB to blank the unwanted on a DVD > Shrink to compress > ImgBurn to burn = Never starting a thread asking how to backup a movie

clonedvd 2 + anydvd runs about 50 bucks on sale and 60 not on sale, so thats not twice as much

Slysoft products, you'll need to even come close to want DVDFAB Platinum has to offer. The discount sale prices. ANYDVD 33.76, AnyDVD HD 20.67, Clone2 26.87, Clone DVD Mobile 26.87, total 108.17. DVDFAB Platinum is 49.00. Here's some information I copied and pasted from their web site. DVDFab HD Decrypter is a simple version of DVDFab Platinum. It copies entire DVD movie to hard disk, and removes all the protections (CSS, RC, RCE, APS, UOPs and Sony ARccOS) while copying. It also comes with full HD-DVD and Blu-Ray support (Removes AACS). Cheers!

Just checking... Yep, it's still the DVD Shrink forum. LOL Instead of suggesting alternate programs and giving our favorites, why not suggest what helps DVD Shrink work? Now if it was asked, what programs can I use besides DVD Shrink, that would open the flood gates. All Shrink needs is well "cleaned" source files. That can be had with the free DVDFab HD Decrypter. It's the same decryption software from DVDIdle's retail programs, and gets updated at the same rate as the retail apps. RipIt4Me does a good job. But, it lost support and there are a few movies it can't do. I'll occasionally recommend RB over Shrink, but that's for when compression becomes an issue.

Most transcoding software nowadays doesn't include decryption. Other than the decryption problems, Shrink 3.2 is still the same good transcoder it has always been. The interface may not be as "slick" as CloneDVD 2 or some of the others, but it still does a good job. The big plus is that it's a good job for free.

Berryone
I agree, it would be helpful if results are posted. I'll bet whatever method is employed, better decryption will be part of the solution.

As I had said, I reviewed related posts before starting this new thread but I posted because the situation I described was completely different than those who also reported the generic "cyclic redundancy check" and "copy protection error". Proactively, I posted to see if there were other solutions or if this was stemming from a unique cause-- since it was a different scenario. Details can make all the difference, so one must take them seriously.

I'm sure Mr. Pink, though, had the foresight or expertise that I do not to know that is probably the same problem faced by different situations: that the disks are too new for dvd shrink to decode. Hopefully, this post might help others who had my same situation occur.

So, Berryone, I didnt follow any of the suggested solutions as of yet... but after doing some checking: trying dvds from different years (2001, then a 2007, then a 2005, etc) I've resigned to the fact that its probably the DVDshrink capabilities that won't allow it to burn because many disks from 2005 on, faced the same failure notices. I havent burned the disks and I'm not sure if I will, but I'll update if I follow one of the suggested courses of action using the additional programs.

cheers!

This thread appears more of the same concerning CRC errors. Causes: poor decryption, obsolete or corrupted software, problem media, and problem hardware. This case appears most likely to be poor decryption with obsolete software as the cause. It's nothing new and has been covered many times on the forum. You supported the obsolete decryption software diagnosis with DVDs that would work and those that wouldn't according to date. DVD Shrink decryption software wasn't the best even when the program was supported. The author suggested using other software when copy protection problems happened. The suggestion still stands. The free DVDFab HD Decrypter is available at http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm . I have a friend who encountered a similar situation and updated decrytion software solved his problems. Good luck with the recordings if you decide to do them.

Just an update - i had these problems for any movie i tried to shrink whilst using vista. the analysis component worked fine but when you went to make the copy ie backup the copy protection error surfaced. Quick changeover to my xp machine , same movies not a problem. so it has to be something in vista. tried it with 3 or 4 movies some new some old same result - vista sucks , xp rules.

DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and the others all work fine in Vista for most setups. The problems are likely related to something other than Vista itself.

In Vista, try right clicking the shortcut icon or exe and set XP compatibility mode (Properties/Compatibility). It's a Windows function a lot of people appear to have forgotten or are unfamiliar with. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
