trouble with emule

Hi all. I originally tacked this onto the 'emule copyright infringing trouble' thread, but decided to make it a thread on its own. I recieved a letter from my ISP, yesterday, stating they had recieved a Take Down notice from the Symantec Corporation. Reason being they've tracked me sharing one of it's products on emule. Symantec aren't threatening to do anything directly, but have obviously kicked the proverbial ass of my ISP. Now, i'm wondering what to expect from this, will i be prosecuted, or will ISP terminate my connection, as they're threatening to do in their accompanying letter.Fired off a very grovelling email to them immediately on reciept of letter, stating i hadn't intended to distribute said software intentionally, truth is i downloaded it & forgot about it, didn't actually use the program !Any advice will be gratefully recieved on this case, anyone with similar experiences, etc. Btw,IP .dat filter was updated every 2 days as per Dela's emule tutorial.

Yeah, I replied on your previous thread. If they're still talking to you then I'd first advise you back the (*#$^ off quickly - when they start knocking on your door it's a slippery slope after that. Mea Culpa all over the place, turn off the file sharing software for a couple months, write letters with sincere apologies and a firm belief in the rights of software companies, etc. That should keep you out of jail and keep your service up!
Then spend the next few months learning about firewall settings and emule configuration. I think they figure this out by watching the traffic and identifying source / data ports related to peer to peer software. They then directly query your machine to see what you're sharing. Running the software's not illegal, it's the contents they're after. If they can't see the contents, you're good.
After a month or two when you're all firewalled and configured, try again.

Cheers Raston. Thought i had it configured sufficiently with IP .dat filter, etc. Obviously not !Done the 'crawling' email bit, both to company & my ISP.Just a matter of waiting now................. Finished with p-2-p, bollocks to it !!

Indeed it's a pain, but I firmly believe it's one of our last bastions against garbage like the RIAA. Is theft wrong? Yes. Are the RIAA thieves too? Yes. Does stealing from the theives make sense? Well, with someone like Bush in the white house, there's not much more a citizen can do. They're listening now, aren't they? :) They're even starting to run out of money after suing hundreds of citizens and ISP's for a couple years... :\ Therefore, I believe it's worth the pain - The more such information we can disseminate, the more people can use it without fear of sudden, horrible repercussion, the more powerful the average citizen becomes.

Got email from ISP today, no further action will be taken. Yippee.Probably 'cos i fessed up immediately.But like i said previously, bollocks to p-2-p, ain't goin' thru this shit again.

As for the ipfilter.dat, you dont really believe that they could possibly block every single ip address that is a threat do you? That would be pretty much impossible! It just holds off people who are starting to become a threat, symnatec will probably be added to that list as soon as their ip addresses are found but there is still no way to make sure you are completely ok! I mean it's p2p, as long as your uploading its a risk!

No mate, i didn't expect all ip's to be blocked, just a bit surprised i got nabbed by such a big concern.As for me 'Bollocks to p-2-p' statement, hmmm, we'll see. Dela, what's the biggest issue with all this, the downloading, the sharing, or both ?

Sharing, uploading is the problem because you dont know it but u might end up uploading to someone out to find out who's sharing the file. As for downloading, they cant really do much about that yet although we all know now the recording industry monitors kazaa downloads and some other p2p! p2p is not dead though, things like this will be challanged and privacy will be called into question! Also sooner or later there will be some form of anonymous p2p, maybe ud have to pay for it but it'll come. You can already use a lot of p2p apps through an anonymous proxy server so pretty soon one will be based on proxies I reckon!

Yeah, i would think in my case they've set downloads away for their own products, probably caught a lot of us that day ! Obvious answer is not to share, but i wouldn't do that, so it may be a case of leaving it alone for a while. Besides, ISP's bound to have their beady little eye on me, wouldn't give 'em the satisfaction, mate. They must have noticed a lot of traffic to emule port, but done nowt about it till they get leaned on.

Hey I understand that but IRC is not like p2p, there are distributers and they do it for no profit, just to do it, make the world a better place for everyone so using IRC is always a good option! :-)

I'm not sure if it's still going on or not to be honest. All i know is everyone except myself and kjoeh (guy i met on irc) got disconnected from the channel earlier and i have only seen praetor and some other guy since. Pretty bad!
